Yes, the brakes on the bus (see my other videos on our bus) are more than adequate to handle the bus and the Jeep. However, state laws, which are different from state to state, require the toad to have a braking system in most states for any towed vehicle weighing over 3,000 lbs. Thanks for watching. Check out my other videos on KZitem on the Jeep and our converted bus.

piece of advice, get a better tow bar/hitch set up. its raising your rear and squatting the front of the toad because its not a good set up. the tow bar mounting points and ball should be as level as possible at all times for proper towing.
@strayhound61

The suburban was only being used to test the new mounting plate and is not the normal towing vehicle. The Jeep is normally towed behind our motor home with a lower ball position. Additionally, the tow vehicle weighs 13 tons.

One way to do toad brakes is to get a type 20 brake chamber and put a yoke where the slack adjuster would be, pinned to the brake pedal. You use an air pressure regulator to get the right pressure dialed in so that you don't lock up the toad hydraulic brakes. Quick disconnects to remove the unit.

The Jeep tracks nice and straight. When towing it with your bus, do you rig up the Jeep brakes? I recently made a tow bar. I put the dampener bushings on the Toad at the swivel point. I can send pics to anyone interested. It was a simple build.
@strayhound61
8 жыл бұрын
I'd like to see the pics. No brakes yet, but thinking about it because some states require them. Unfortunately, they only consider the weight of the towed vehicle and not the weight differential between the toad and the tow. In the bus, you don't know it's back there except for when you go up a steep hill.

@John Matthews Hi, do you notice a difference in the time it takes to stop (hit the brakes) while you are flat towing with the additional weight?
@strayhound61
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. So, I'm not sure if you know this, but I usually tow the Jeep with my old converted Greyhound bus (see my other videos). The bus is designed to carry far more weight than the Jeep adds to the total load without a bus full of passengers and luggage. Having said that, I really can't tell the Jeep is back there normally. It' is slower going uphill, but stopping seems about the same. The Invisibrake setting is adjustable, but always applies the same amount of braking resistance for the same amount of time (about 15 seconds), so it it unaffected by hard or soft braking, which is how it's designed to work. There is about a half second delay for the Jeep brakes to activate once the bus brakes have been applied. I have never towed it with the Suburban with the Invisibrake working. Without the Invisibrake, it definitely takes the suburban longer to stop when towing the Jeep. It is really isn't safe to tow the Jeep without a braking system working in the Jeep like the Invisibrake system. In fact, in most states it would be illegal because the Jeep exceeds the state weight limit on towing vehicles without brakes. The state limit varies from state to state, so you'd have to check your state to see what's required. Not sure I'm answering your question, so if not, I'm happy to explain further if needed. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching, be sure to subscribe to my channel!

The transfer case self lubricates in neutral. The transmission requires the engine to be running and the oil pump to be running for proper bearing lubrication. With the engine off, it will not be properly lubricated as I am told. Good question.

Yes, thats true, if you had a manual, no problem, since your seems to be an automatic one, you have to take off driveshaft between transfer box and gearbox for long distances, in my opinion, is useless, because all the weight on the cherokee and on his brakes

A little late, but if you lock the hubs,put the transfer case in neutral, and the manual transmission in gear, you should be ok. If the tranny is turning without the engine running, the bearings will run dry and fail. The front hubs locked ensures proper oil movement in the transfer case.

The angle at hard braking is too much. When you go over dips and brake at the same time it compounds the effect. Can you flip the receiver over and re-mount the ball? It seems that on the Suburban, if the ball were 3" lower, you would not get that upward thrust. If you keep it as it is, the friction on the receiver is going to wear it out quickly (develop slop).
@strayhound61

Hey Kevin, You are correct. But I don't normally tow the Jeep with the Suburban. The normal tow vehicle is the bus and the receiver is considerably lower. It was too much work to turn the ball over just for the 5 minute test drive.

The Suburban was only used to test the tracking on the Jeep when the base plate was first installed. This allowed the opportunity to see how it performed. The normal tow vehicle is a 13 ton Greyhound bus. There is no nose dive on the Jeep or raising of the bus during braking. Additionally, the geometry is correct on the bus which was not the case with the Suburban. Thanks for the comment.

John Matthews oh I see I'm sorry about that sir. But let me ask you do you think I can tow my Jeep with my Silverado without having the Jeep brakes working. If I just take it really easy? It's just what I do causes me to need two vehicles where I'm going sometimes like I don't have anyone that can drive the Jeep and then drive it back so. The Silverado has big dual-piston calipers on the front good old drum brakes in the back what do you think sir? If you got a minute

John Matthews I didn't notice if you had any kind of braking system in your Jeep. I'm just looking for an opinion talking to somebody who knows more than me about it. Plus where did you get that bar that mounts under the bumper
@strayhound61
6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, Thanks for the additional questions. Here are several thoughts. First, your Silverado won't have any problem "towing" the Jeep from a weight perspective, it probably has a 5,000 max on the hitch and jeeps are generally around 4,000-4,500 lbs. Also, if you level your tow bar like you suggested I do with my Suburban, under riding and over riding the bar should minimize the problem. Although, the back of a pickup truck is much lighter than a Suburban and finding the exact hitch height might be challenging for a good smooth panic stop. Having said that, I'm not sure how extensively you need to tow your Jeep. Stopping distance will be greatly increased and because of the weight differential and could potentially cause an accident. If you were towing with a much heavier vehicle (like my bus) I wouldn't be so worried about it. But, here's the thing: most states require vehicles over 3,000 lbs. being towed be equipped with a braking system. check this link for a state by state list: www.readybrake.com/state-towing-laws.html I have not posted a video on my braking system, but after I built the tow bracket for the Jeep, I also purchased an InvisiBrake system and added it to the Jeep so it does brake while being towed and it does meet the states requirements. There are several systems you can buy from that one to Brake Buddy, AriForce One, and others. If you are going to do a lot of towing, especially over 25 mph, I would suggest getting one. Some just sit on the floor of the towed vehicle and other, like the InvisiBrake, are actually permanently installed in the vehicle. I purchased the InvisiBrake used on eBay for about half the new price. Good Luck. Let me know if you have any other questions.

So, now I can ask you a question. This is the fourth vehicle I've used the same blue ox tow bar on. It is a couple of hundred pounds under rated for the 2 door. Is yours a 4 door? What's the weight rating stated on the tongue on yours? The last two vehicles we towed were even heavier than the Wrangler and there was never a problem? It is far better than some of the junk you can buy at the local auto parts places. (like the name "smooth operator." It's the slogan in Maryland for safe driving campaign. It was part of our training program when I had a real job.)

First off the tow bar is way to high. Th ball should be much lower. (4.26) you can see on flat ground its not flat but pointing to the sky. Flip the ball over and see how that looks. or get a flat receiver. The thrashing of the ball is bad. Also almost every state (46) you must have a braking system in place to help brake your dinghy.. .
@strayhound61

Thanks for watching. The Suburban is not the normal tow vehicle, it was just being used to test the new hitch and mounting bracket for the Jeep. The Jeep normally follows our converted Greyhound bus which has an appropriate ball height receiver. While the hitch needed adjustment (which has been done), the energy absorbing sliding ball in the receiver is normal. I have a video on the Invisibrake system which was added shortly after this video was posted. Just can't do everything at once, you know. Thanks for the comments. Check out my other videos about brakes and the bus.

That was just a test drive. The suburban is not the normal tow vehicle. The Jeep normally follows a 12 ton bus and the height of the ball is closer to the ground. Also, an Invisibrake system has been added to the Jeep which reduces the pressure on the hitch. The shape of the hitch with the two bends in it are the way BlueOx made it. I have towed about six different vehicles with it over the years without issue.

Why use such a heavy vehicle for tow? If it were me, and I wanted a more nimble vehicle for offroad use at a campsite or something, I'd just trailer a four wheeler or dirt bike. Wranglers can weigh 4K lbs.
@strayhound61
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. You'll understand the answer to that question when you're 66. For now, we like the versatility of the Jeep. We use it to do a variety of tasks; four-wheeling on the beach, transporting our tandem bike from base station campgrounds, going out to dinner with our grand-kids when they are with us and because we just like the joy of opening the top on the Jeep and riding around in nice weather. My wife won't ride on the motorcycle with me anymore anyway. Nothing wrong with your suggestion though. A 4-wheeler and dirt bikes w/o tags are not street legal, which makes going very far from the campgrounds problematic. Just a matter of time and place.

You should have a weight distributing hitch
@strayhound61
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thought Christopher. Usually, weigh distributing hitches are designed to distribute trailer tongue weight between the rear and front wheels of the tow vehicle. There is no tongue weight on the tow bar to distribute, except for the weight of the bar itself which is less the 50 lbs. Regardless, the Suburban was just being used to test the tow bracket on the Jeep. Normally, the Jeep follows us in our 13 ton motor home, which is a converted Greyhound bus. There is no weight surge to lift the rear of the bus when using the bus to stop the Jeep. See my other videos about the bus. Thanks for the comment!

Sorry Mr. Church, but you are incorrect. On the 2015 Jeep Wrangler, the KEY CAN BE REMOVED from the ignition for 4-wheel flat towing. There is no steering wheel lock on this model. I do this frequently. I take the key out, lock the door, and put the key in my pocket when I tow this vehicle. (my 2005 Jeep Liberty did require the key to be in the ignition and turned to the unlock position for flat towing.)
