So there's a good story about this song... Leonard Cohen first met Jeff at Jeff's father's funeral (Tim Buckley was also a very talented singer), Jeff asked if he could writer a cover of this and Cohen was so impressed with Jeff's guitar and vocal abilities he said absolutely. Jeff picked out the lyrics from various versions of the song Leonard had played over the years (he constantly changed the lyrics and tone of the song) and made it a distinctly sensual theme which he was ultimately embarrassed about. He didn't want Leonard to hear it. He also allegedly didn't want to put it on the album but the label insisted. Leonard Cohen LOVED Jeff's interpretation and has apparently said it's the best version of the song he's ever heard. It's definitely more sexual than the original, but it works so well, and with Jeff's pining, soulful, agonizing tone it's (IMO) a work of musical perfection.

I think the album version is the best, but of all the "Hallelujah" covers, Jeff's is without question the best. Check out "Lover You Should've Come Over" and "Mojo Pin" for starters. You really can't go wrong with any choices. He was a gift to the world, taken too soon because we didn't deserve him. 😭

Though John Cale did this arrangement first (and did it brilliantly), it was Jeff Buckley who made it his own. For everyone that has done it in any reality show later, Buckley is the standard. NO-ONE has reached that standard...

@@Nana_Reads Love K.D. Lang, and have been listening to her since she released "Angel with a Lariat" with the Reclines back in '87. In my book K.D.s rendition of "Hallelujah" battle with Rufus Wainwright's for 2nd place - but for me Jeff Buckley will always be the front runner - I prefer his renditions simplicity and vulnerability to anything. The way he accompany himself on the acoustic, is pure genious. The song doesn't need more... 😊 Petatonic is technically brilliant, but compared to the 3 before mentioned, I find Pentatonic a bit boring. But hey, I've been wrong before... 😁

@@Nana_ReadsI also love KD Lang’s version, it shows off her stunning virtuosity. For me Jeff’s version is more sensitive, delicate, soulful, and haunting. They are both beautiful to me, in different ways. But the emotional power of Jeff’s version will always make it my favourite 😢❤

Jeff Buckley's version of "Lilac Wine" on the Grace record is stunning, too. Its intimacy is very reminiscent of Nina Simone's arrangement. Loved "Hallelujah." Great reaction. Oh yes, and he's a serious Zeppelin fan, and it was quite mutual as Jimmy Page lauded "Grace" a lot when it was released.
