"look at Robin Williams" Robin lived a fulfilling life with multiple hobbies into his sixties and had undetected health conditions that may have exacerbated his depression in the end. Like... I get being critical of this kind of advice, I do. But some people are so fixated on tragedy that I've stopped looking at mental health support groups online because it turns into a room of people loudly describing how eternally broken they are and that makes me feel even more like trash. Jerma's advice and the fact it includes animals and plants as well as humans honestly is pretty sensible. Making others happy makes me happy, and I know he didn't mean 'do nothing for yourself and everything for others', because I'm depressed, not stupid.

The thing people are forgetting with Robin Williams was that he turned into a shut-in at the end of his life because he had underlying health problems that caused him to forget who he was; it was a rare cognitive disease, I think. One of the last things he told anyone was that he was 'forgetting how to be himself', or was 'forgetting how to make others happy'. The fact that he was still making others happy was what kept him holding on, and his illness was both killing him and making him lose himself. I hate people using the "Look at Robin Williams" argument as a result because there's a stark difference between being depressed but physically and mentally capable, and depressed but literally dying and forgetting who you are and what makes you, you, every single day, with no way to fix it.
@garlicbug
2 жыл бұрын
@@xweert711 Yes basically. My comments are a bit blunt, but I don't want to dismiss the horrible situation Robin was in through no fault of his own. The thing is, most likely the people seeing this video (whether watching the stream or getting this clip sent to them by the algorithm) are PROBABLY not in the situation he was in, and bringing him up (which someone did when this video was first posted) as a counter to a streamer opining 'helping others and volunteering makes you feel better' is maliciously absurd.

One of the big causes of depression in life, besides just having a terrible life, is not feeling like your life has meaning. Jerma's advice solves this. By making someone else laugh, by caring for someone, you feel like you have meaning. If you make someone else happy it makes you feel fulfilled and that tends to stave off depression.
@squtnik

@EagerSleeper

Some people strive for life to have a meaning, but some folk's perspective is that a lack of meaning is the most freeing thing of all. What is the meaning of The Sims? What is the meaning of a cup of coffee? What is the meaning of riding a rollercoaster on a nice summer day? Nothing matters, and not only will everybody die, but the ability of the planet to sustain life will run out too. You're here as an evolutionary anomaly, and you can literally do anything you want. Make your own meaning. Aspire to self-publish 100 pieces of Gex erotic fanfiction, get your body covered in tattoos of Gex, create the ultimate Gex fansite then delete it, or just see how many times you can reference Gex in a youtube comment. Nothing matters, and any time you feel bad, it is because chemicals in your brain are making you feel that way. Learn to manipulate those chemicals through diet, excercise, sleep, social skills, and enjoyment of the world and its activities, like Gex.

Okay genuine question, but like what about people who don't feel empathy? Let's say that you're doing the same that he said, you're helping others, you make them laugh and all that, but what if them feeling good doesn't make you feel good? What could you even do then?
@fiddleriddlediddlediddle

@@sarii_p1697 The answer to this would depend on the individual. My guess would be that the life they live is keeping them from caring about others. hey! like jerma said, volunteering at local spaces where volunteers are welcome, if not needed, is an amazing way to better realize the value you hold in the world. whether it's your local animal kennel, elderly folks home, day care, or whatever, finding places where you're an important role in someone else's happiness is profound. the only criticism I have is if you're in a place where you're especially emotional or incapable of holding a certain kind of responsibility in a role then you may want to slow your roll and volunteer for one of the lesser responsible spots, working yourself to more weighted positions as you improve

it goes even deeper than that. not only are you the reason you are making people happy but it’s because of your actions that are making people happy. this could be the way you smile or the gestures you do that are so infectious to the people around you. if people are laughing with you, then they are appreciating you. if working on yourself isn’t working, working for others does in fact make a two way connection that also makes you appreciate yourself as well
