Any top-level competitor, who is honorable, wants to test themselves against another at their best. A victory against anything less is a hollow one and doesn't force them to grow or require the best out of them. You'll notice the Jet Li character also wanted the Japanese fighter at his best. He had him at an obvious disadvantage when the weapons were switched. Honor and integrity on both sides.

How many realized that when the Japanese Master stopped the fight (actually a demonstration of styles) he saw that he could have been killed with that one punch. Notice the punch at the end that went through his blocks was right on the Japanese Master's heart. He looked at it and knew the fight was over. It is too bad the whole fight wasn't shown. It is excellent.

Seeing this, I realized that Jet Lee's kung fu style young time is more cool than others. He style is more classy. He displays fantasy kung fu show the best of the others. Unfortunately he is less muscular and short that sometimes overwhelmed when faced with a large and muscular opponent. In terms of fighting style as a young man, he's the coolest of Dick Wei, Max Zhang, Donny Yen and Zacky Chan. Even Bruce Lee's fighting style was not as cool as agile than Jet Lee. The only two issues that he: less muscular and short.
