Speaking as a professional Guitarist and Tutor, there is no in my opinion no greatest Guitarist in the world so to speak. Every Guitarist has a unique sound ,style or voice that speaks and caters to the individual taste. For example, I know Guitarists who rate Clapton as a great but they personally don’t want to listen to him. I love Danny Gatton and many many Guitarists who never got the credit they deserved during their lifetime and only became famous after their demise. You can’t rate one single guy as an all time great 😊 But Rory was one hell of a Guitarist and inspired many to grab a Vox AC 30 and a treble booster and a Guitar as a set up. Brian May for one.

I'll bet it was. Had a similar experience way back when Santana was on tour just as the Moonflower album broke. I was about three rows back and right in front of Carlos the whole time. After draining every ounce of energy out of me, he ended the night with Toussaint L'Overture. If you know the song, at the end he does this very fast picking and runs chromatically up the neck, his classic line. The band was driving so hard and he was SO on it. All of a sudden, everyone stopped but he had set his pedal board to just sustain the last note in a pulse. He set his guitar on a stand next to him and walked off stage. The lights came up. I couldn't move, I almost couldn't breathe. When you see someone THAT good as you did with Rory, you never experience anything like it again. You remember everything don't you! I do.

This is a long but true story :: the girlfriend of a mate was an Irish student making the "few quid" in London one summer and one of her gang saw Rory's name in a local paper . This guy is supposed to be good, she thought and since he's playing somewhere close at the weekend, I'm gonna suggest to the rest of the gang that we go check him out. Now Marie, when I knew her had pretty conservative tastes in music but they went to the gig out of nothing more than curiosity ! Marie got separated from her friends soon after getting in and the crowd was moving inexorably towards the stage where this supposedly famous guitarist was lost in his divine brilliance. Without ever being physically pushed she went with the flow of the crowd and, separated from her friends, her chest was soon pressed against the edge of the stage and she became frightened, then terrified cos she could hardly breathe. The famous guitarist, mid-stage, glanced over and knew immediately she was in trouble. STILL PLAYING HE WENT TO THE BLONDE WITH THE BULGING EYES AND ROARED AT HER TO GRAB HIS JACKET AND, CLINGING TO THE GUY WITH ALL HER MIGHT SHE WAS PULLED UP ON TO THE STAGE ! Rory walked her to stage side and then went back to work as she wept with relief and delight that this guy had saved her life ! This is 100 % true and my name, if you need corroboration, is Leonard McCormack, phone no. available on my FB profile. God bless Rory, a genius who broke all the rules as he replaced them with his own better ones . Geniu = love = God !

The question is; did Jimi Hendrix really say that?

3 жыл бұрын
Okay, so far I've heard it said that Jimi said that: "...that guy plays better than me..." (referring to Chicago's Terry Kath), "...that guy is the best white blues player I've ever heard." (referring to ZZTop's Billy Gibbons), and now this one referring to Rory Gallagher. It seems like Jimi was just a humble guy who appreciated the other talented musicians around him and gave them credit for their hard work and the quality of music that they produced. There is no formula or person's viewpoint that is 100% reality any more than there is always 100% veracity in these kind of handed down off hand statements. Terry was great, Billy was great, Jimi was great, and Rory was great. So are millions of other players the world over. I'd hate to be the winner of any contest that had me only listening to one group, or player exclusively and forever. Just enjoy what you like and let it go at that. There is huge menu available for our ears. The more courses to the meal, the more satisfying the dining experience may be...

It's heyday was relatively short but so diverse and rich. Thank God. The best guitar player of that era? It's the one you listened to yesterday, the one you're listening to right now AND the one you're going to listen to tomorrow. All of 'um. I grew up with it and I'm still finding gems that I didn't hear back when it was first created. Golden earing was amongst supports, and I thought that was great (never heard Rory as 13 yrs old). But when he came up.. Was something else 😳. Is unbelievable actually as I think back now. There only were like 900 people.. Can you imagine now... In 1990's , think even 80's, real or that kind of music git a uppercut by commercial stuff, and of you look at it these days.. Bands from 60n-70 's sell most tickets. How would Rory fit in these days If? I guess he wouldn't. Last time I saw him.. In 95, only were like 350 ppl, and that was his 2e last gig ever.... But I am glad Rory loves on anyway 👍

You're joking, Rory was about 3 levels above Jimmy, easy. The thing about Rory was he had the technical ability, he had musical pedigree, he had the passion and feel and he had the spontaneity; in my opinion, a lot of amazing guitarists don't always manage to incorporate all of those qualities. Just to say, that I have never understood why people rave about Keith Richards, boring as shit, maybe that undermines my opinion on guitarists, who knows lol

Rory Gallagher was an amazing guitarist I saw him at My Father's Place a small club on Long Island at that time I was really into Johnny Winter and thought there was no one on the planet that could play blues with so much fluidity and taste and sound so full but I was wrong because Rory blew the roof off of that small club and showed me what could be done with a Fender Stratocaster in the right hands, now as far as Jimmy Page what I believe is that of course Jimmy is great and has written some of the most iconic riffs in rock and even those songs that Led Zep copied they made better.Jimmy Page is a much "smarter" guitarist he can arrange songs beautifully and knows what parts will work in a song and which ones won't he can write majestic hymns like Kashmir and Stairway and simple riff rock like Black Dog, Jimmy is a force of nature not because he is an incredible guitarist but because he is a consummate musician .Comparing the two is really like comparing apples and oranges they are both good in their own way

Page is an extremely reserved person and not given to hyperbole or effusive praise of anybody. That being said, his comments on Gallagher were quite perfunctory considering how great of a guitarist Rory was. And they were contemporaries of each other, so it's unlikely that Page wasn't familiar with him. Gallagher could play with anybody, he doesn't need Jimmy Page to validate him.
