By the time of this interview, Screw magazine had done a dozen features about my cinematic endeavors, so I had gotten to know Al pretty well. He's in good spirits here, raunchy, astute and definitely not politically correct, which were the attributes of his editorial and on-camera style from the earliest days of Screw and his groundbreaking cable show, Midnight Blue. This little clip (done for one of my own cable shows back then) captures Al and Screw in that period just before all the dark weirdness hit the fan. Al was the Tom Paine of the Sexual Revolution- he tore the envelope and kicked open the doors, walked the freedom of speech walk and paid the price many times over. His life and career had great rarified highs and gut-wrenching lows, and he remained a curmudgeonly opinionated wizened mensch till the bitter end. Rest in Peace, Al.
(... and if you're offended by smutty musings, just kindly pass on this and move on.)
