Maybe in a kickboxing match. But unless he learned BJJ or some more advanced grappling, most MMA fighters would exploit that weakness almost immediately. That's not to say Joe Lewis wouldn't do well with his Judo skills and I'm not saying he isn't a great stand up fighter. Shit he's one of the greatest strikers of all time. But with limited knowledge on ground fighting, he'd have a very hard time in MMA.

Ur extremely fortunate & so am I.i spoke to him over the phone in 91.we talked about 10 -15 minutes of his then exebition fight with Bill Wallace, the upcoming Tyson-Holyfield bout,& a little bit about bodybuilding.howeber, nothing was bought up about Bruce Lee.guess I was too excited about talking to a living legend! So sad he's passed. But he is the eternal warrior- how fitting!

Imagine a heavy weight that was light on his feet and was fast asf and had power, even Ali didn’t have power, now imagine if someone in the ufc that was a heavy weight that had both power and speed, like nganou, man joe lewis was no joke definitely a pioneer of American kickboxing and legend of karate.

Thanks for posting this. John Korab, one of Joe Lewis's first instructors, was my first martial arts instructor back in the early 70s. He had a little studio in Lindenwold, New Jersey. He was absolutely awesome. I'll always be grateful to him for getting me started on the right track.

@Snagglefratz -- I met John Korab when he came to Long Beach in preparation for a team tournament at the Long Beach Elks Lodge auditorium. There was Lewis, Korab, Jay T Will, Jerry Pennington and I think someone else all one team. I got to play punching bag for them uh, I mean sparred with them. There were teams from the Norris school, Ed Parker and Mike Stone. Some big names were in attendance like Joey Orbillo and some Chinese guy named Lee. I think his name was Bruce Lee or something like that. In one of Joe's matches his opponent came at him with a wheel (round) kick. Joe dropped to the ground and thrust a side kick into his opponents groin. it was like frozen in time. There was Joe on the ground and his opponents leg still in the air and then the judge called no point. I didn't know of Korab but Joe talked about training with him in Okinawa. It was a Marine to Marine kind of thing. :-) You were most fortunate to have a sensi like John Korab.
