As an African American, one of the most racist things I've ever heard is someone telling me that we need to lower academic standards to allow more black people. Not only is this extremely offensive (are you saying we're not smart enough?), it defies common sense. We need the best and brightest to lead irregardless of race / group identity. If we have been putting people into positions of influence / power / authority based on group quotas or charisma and not merit, then it makes sense why we are having so many problems today as a nation.

Some disciplines have changed the definition from the definition that was taught during the 2000's in schools in the US. Racism is "those systems and beliefs that lead to the relegation of racial groups to lower rungs of society." So it's not the denigration and relegation of people based on race. This kind of racism can be corrected for and counteracted whereas the old definition had to be eradicated ideologically.

@@chaos2643 It's not even that. We pre-select. Getting into the US isn't easy. To gain citizenship we're already grabbing the top % of any given population group. Between Mao, Korea, and Vietnam we spent several decades just casually skimming off the talent pool from those countries. Those countries have become industrialized stable nations since then. We've moved to India, South America, and some of the old soviet block states. Those are the big influxes over the last couple decades. We aren't grabbing the average from anywhere. We're taking the top 1%. The EU and the US are both competing for the best of the best from the underdeveloped areas of the world, but the EU pulls more heavily from Africa instead of South America. Be raw intelligence, work ethic, whatever. Getting past the immigration process is a litmus test. The hypothetical average person isn't going to make it. So they are here, they have children, and what do you expect from their children? We tossed out everyone who wasn't exceptional in some respect. What we setup unintentionally is a eugenics system. Maybe just maybe, for a second, hang on now, but maybe the years of systematic oppression and murder of black people, particularly successful black people and or black leadership and black fathers; has stunted the growth of the black community in America. Or are we just going to ignore the fact that black protesters weren’t getting hosed by fire hydrants and dogs set on them in the street 3 generations ago. Or the war on “crime and drugs” that happened 2 generations ago that made it legal for police to abuse their power anyway they saw fit. In one of the passages also referring to the Chinese, Einstein noted that “even those reduced to working like horses never give the impression of conscious suffering. A peculiar herd-like nation [ … ] often more like automatons than people.” The problem is we grow up going to water parks and riding bikes while there is a culture that is pure work. It's like if we competed with the work ethic of the people of the late 1800's, they are having their industrial boom while ours is over. Plus less laws/workers rights. Not saying that is bad, but it CAN be seen as a threat to our way of life in the states. If what went on over there took place here, child services would be called. Charlie munger also quoted the chinese saying "" what you call immoral, they call values."

This is absolutely true. In the sense that Asians do better in school. My dad was a first generation immigrant and told me that in order to get anywhere is to get an education and excel. My nieces and nephews are going through harder times than the scrutiny that I went through. In order for them to be allowed to attend social events and hangout with friends or even just play video games, they have to maintain a GPA or at least 3.5 If it goes below that, lockdown occurs and they can’t do anything but study until the GPA gets restored past the threshold. Even more so, if they excel. They get rewarded with huge allowances along side being allowed to socialize and have recreational activities. I had to go through that but it wasn’t as rigid. We Asians, are brought up to look up to scientists, doctors etc , instead of movie stars or singers . I remember as a child when teachers ask our aim in life in school, everyone says scientists, doctors, engineers etc. We're more realistic about our future because that's how our parents raised us to be.

The main reason Asians don’t protest nearly as much or get into that kind of mind set imo, is because as a culture have been told their whole lives that no one else is going to give them anything and it’s all up to them to make their lives the best possible. Most western cultures have this entitlement mentality that makes them feel like they don’t need to try as hard because they deserve it for some reason or another.

Ozzy Man Diaz it's not a joke. It's disgusting to me but it's what colleges are doing. I'm Hispanic and they're doing the same thing to us. It's so condescending. They think we're not competent enough to make it in without help. Like we're some poor helpless people who can't make it on our own.
@GamerTheTurtle
5 жыл бұрын
I never laughed at it. And being hispanic i can say it's sort of insulting too, but unless you're a non hispanic white or asian, it's really nothing more than a pride issue. Bottom line these schools aren't accepting total boneheads either just because of their race. 250+ SAT scores MOST likely dont help nearly as much as who you actually ARE in your application. It's still super common for these 4.0+ GPA drones with fancy SAT scores not getting accepted race regardless because they're just a boring individual who wasn't part of any club/organization/sport. And again, I'm hispanic, but in the end if the fact that it's "condescending" hurts your pride so much, why not just go out of your way to prove that you're not a "poor helpless [person] who can't make it on [your] own"? To prove the stereotype wrong? I have a feeling a lot of Asians/Whites are complaining just because they have a bone to pick since they got rejected because they have such a bland backround in highschool. They don't want drones who churn in homework and churn out test scores, they want people with great personalities, social skills, and moral character. Their aptitude is just icing on the cake.

Incredibly disingenuous information. from the same article it says "...the Princeton study Lee refers to has been widely criticized by academics who argue that it relies too heavily on grades and test scores to draw conclusions about racial bias and that the data the study uses are too old to be relevant." Spreading dissent and fostering resentment towards minorities is an old trick. Please study history and be careful to believe stereotypes and hype.

I heard the asians at Harvard were not getting accepted as much because the interviewers with possible future students did not go well, since I guess the interviewers saw the asians as awkward - and the pull back was from the lawsuit saying the interviewers not understanding the asian culture, and not understanding that they probably do 'bad' in the personal interviews because they are not familiar with American humor, etc.

Every university wants to discriminate for diversity. Their are two ways of doing this, based on race (which is technically illegal, and rarely practiced) and based on class or socioeconomic status. Harvard is one of the last to discriminate based on race, why? Because the majority of their white students are from wealthy Jewish families. If they changed to a class based system, then would have to enroll less Jewish people and the Jews would lose their domineering control of Harvard. That is the entire reason for the issue right there.

From the Los Angeles Times For Asian Americans, a changing landscape on college admissions (LA Times) Lee's next slide shows three columns of numbers from a Princeton University study that tried to measure how race and ethnicity affect admissions by using SAT scores as a benchmark. It uses the term “bonus” to describe how many extra SAT points an applicant's race is worth. She points to the first column. African Americans received a “bonus” of 230 points, Lee says. She points to the second column. “Hispanics received a bonus of 185 points.” The last column draws gasps. Asian Americans, Lee says, are penalized by 50 points - in other words, they had to do that much better to win admission.

Seems folk are using the term "Asians" fairly broadly when the two Asian demographics in question are Chinese and Japanese applicants. Culture, history, economics, leadership etc...have more to do with Chinese and Japanese performance than race. That said, Harvard is looking for a "QUALITATIVE" dynamic student body, and I do recall some years ago the US Supreme Court holding Harvard's affirmative action policies as an idea benchmark. We are no longer in industrial age, folks. The world needs great thinkers and not mere replicators of information.

Unpopular Opinion: *PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE JUDGED ON THEIR RACE* If Asians are truly making up a majority of the most competitive applicants at elite universities then it is our best interest as a society to get out of their way and let them do their thing. Success is not a zero sum game. By elevating those with the greatest competence, our society progresses and we all prosper. [I know that the analogy has already been made, but look at the NBA. Do we say that, even though individuals of African heritage seem to perform best (on average) at skills related to basketball, a balance of races must be represented because this is reflective of the proportions of the total population? *NO* We allow the most qualified participants to rise to the top and we all get enjoy a better sport because of it!]

If the goal of affirmative action is to provide an opportunity to those who might not otherwise have it (IE some students will have better test scores due to access to tutoring, better education, etc), then they ought to get picky on the basis of socioeconomic status NOT on the basis of skin color. Because, believe it or not, there is such thing as a black kid with a tutor and an Asian kid who can't afford a textbook.

If you look up the statistics they make it very clear where all this essentially higher education affirmative action has gotten these people. Black men have the highest drop out rate in 4 year institutes than anyone else and black students in general do not fair well in 6 year programs. You can gift them opportunity they don't earn all you want but as long as outcome is based on hard work and merit the results speak for themselves. You cannot raise a group of people in believing everything is owed to them and nothing is their fault and expect them to succeed, even if that is the true and I won't even argue that point, that kind of mindset just does absolutely nothing to help you succeed and as I said the results speak for themselves. These kids are racking up huge piles of debt only to drop out and allot of them having kids soon after then surprise, they struggle, but that isn't their fault, it is mine because I am white and I created a system that doesn't allow them to succeed. PS if you are black and are successful in any way, are in law enforcement, or are not a Democrat then you are not really black so you don't count. Also Asians are minority poster children for white people who come from wealth, Hispanics are actually white, people of middle eastern descent still haven't faced remotely as much prejudice and suffering as black people so get in line, and don't make me laugh by bringing up Native Americans because they arn't worthy of media coverage nor are a large enough group to where their votes matter so, no coverage.

Rogan just doesn't get it. These schools (it isn't only Harvaard) are trying to boost the number of black students. That is the real story. Asians scores are handicapped to make it harder for them to get in...while black students scores are handicapped to make it easier for them to get in. It is academic affirmative action. It is wrong. I don't know if he doesn't see this..or if he is just too afraid to talk about. But that is the real issue. Schools don't want to answer the question of 'why doesn't Harvard only have '5' black students'? So...they do this. It is BS. You should get into a school based on your grades. ...I am not making this up based on a personal belief or value. This is fact. There is nothign really to discuss. But how many of you will be willing to admit it? Or are you going to disagree because that is the way you are 'supposed' to think? Come on. Start living in reality, people.
