Serving the party above all else etc. Jonathan Haidt actually says something similar about academia. If the telos of a university is not knowledge/pursuit of truth but activism or ‘social justice’, they have assumed what is true and their pursuit of truth will suffer as a result. I think it’s a pretty good explanation of just how untethered from the observable world the far left has become.

rac·ism noun prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. If you think there is an error in the definition of racism please tell
@StrategicWealthLLC
5 жыл бұрын
I think it is a good definition...with some problems. To explain, know that back in the early 80's, scientist found that aborigines in Australia had better eyesight than Australians of European decent. Apparently, thousands of years of unique exposure to what we now call Australia led nature to select really good eyesight for that population of human beings. So here are two really challenging scenarios that challenge the definition of racism: #1) Under the racism definition, is it being "racist" for an Aboriginal Australian: - to believe what scientific research indicates is true about a characteristic of his/her own race (which is a prejudice against other races regarding eyesight superiority)... - even though the Aboriginal Australian acknowledges that the distribution of the trait resulting in excellent average eyesight among Aboriginal Australians varies among them and thus anyone needing someone with good eyesight still needs to judge all that apply as individuals and not view a specific aboriginal as representative of his/her "population" of human beings (indicating no antagonism towards other races)... - while also being aware that it is an evolutionary ingrained behavior of human beings to stereotype..... thus making it highly probable that all Aboriginal Australians will be stereotyped as having good eyesight/others having inferior eyesight relative to Aboriginals (thus practically leading to negative results in some cases where individuals of non-aboriginal descent with outstanding eyesight are overlooked in favor of an Aboriginal Australians with worse eyesight). #2) Using the same scenario, is it racism when the person that discriminates in favor of the Aboriginal candidate is not an Aboriginal Australian himself/herself (thus is not believing his/her own race is superior, as required by the definition), but he/she does generally view Aboriginal Australian candidates more positively for this particular role....because factually, Aboriginal Australian candidates are, on average (generally), better for the role? Personal view: Racism is an awful thing and those being accused of it should be of the KKK/Black Israelite variety. Society has so broadened the definition of racism - even outside of the prejudice + power definition that we are talking about here - that I think it is missing important nuances. I don't think there is anything wrong about scenario #1. I also don't think #2 is racism either. Now, academics would probably call scenario 2 "systemic" or "structural" racism, but I don't think that definition works either. Racism has a core element that the belief in superiority is not based in any truth, but in this scenario, there is truth in the general reason for the discriminating decision. Instead, I think what I described in scenario 2 is the problem of stereotyping which is a subtly different than racism. Stereotyping is a general truth writ large....like "I hate snakes"...when only some snakes are dangerous. As to a further subtly variation of what I mean, consider that scenario 2 not being like racism....is similar to a scenario where a lone woman walking to the other side of the street when seeing a man walking towards her... is not sexism. Stereotyping can have negative/positive effects on people of different races depending on what side of the decision one is on. But I still don't think this is racism. I am being detailed, but I also feel the crime of racism is so bad that society should be very careful in how the charge is applied. Being able to suspend others you disagree with in fear is a form of social power, or social currency and if it can be wielded to make a buck or advance one's station in life, then it makes sense why someone would happily claim to be a victim of racism. @Joe Plummer if this was happening in a vacuum, then yes, that is systemic racism, but historically black people have been oppressed and not given same opportunities for education and been discriminated against for positions for many decades. This equity is a way to undo the wrongs of the past cos one just has to look at any social statistics in terms of academic achievement, health, wealth etc to see blacks are definitely not the privileged in this society. Remember, only 50 years ago we had white supremacy laws in place with segregation, blacks having to move to back of the bus...that laws changed but attitudes didn't simply vanish overnight. We still have all white neighbourhoods, all black etc...still a long way to go for equity and equality.

I mean, I guess that being male does mean you're less likely to feel afraid of being victimized. But, the truth is, that's merely a psychological benefit. Men are far more likely to be victims of violent crime, and it's likely because we don't take the same steps to protect ourselves that women do. We're not afraid to answer the door at 2 am when somebody is banging on it. We're not afraid to walk down a dark alley alone at night. Maybe men SHOULD be more afraid than we are, but our psychology won't let us.

It's the benefit of being disposable. Like how the Princess but always have an escort, the mother must always know where the daughter is going, but the Prince slips away in commoners dress all the time, & the father never cares to ask where the son has gone, only what he has accomplished or returned with. Joe doesn’t get his point across very clearly. But I think what he’s after is that talking about privilege when referring to these issues is just getting it backwards. If someone is not afraid of people making false preconceptions about them based on their race, gender, sexual preference, etc. that is not privilege, that is how it _should_ be - for everyone. The focus should be on fighting racism not this so called ‘privilege’. Of course, I realize that the real aim of people pushing this privilege theme is to shame people so they will ‘move out of the way’ so they can get their own privileged position

There's a reward in not whining, accepting things for how they are, and overcoming your personal hurdles, whatever they may be. Everyone has hurdles. There's nobody with privileges. We are all humans. That means having talents and flaws. Your social circumstances don't take away having disadvantages and hurdles with certain things, just like EVERYONE ELSE. Get over this shit. And when I tell u, this teacher actually sat there and tried to get into arguing with a class of 20+ none white kids about them all being invulnerable to being racist regardless of what they said and she got shut down so much I think she ended up scrapping all the assignments revolving around that subject, was som strange stuff

There are these things called knives and guns so it's not that he did not feel less endangered than his wife in this situation, but he was in fact doing what was expected of him as a man. That is a female privilege if nothing else. Another prime example is his idea of the difference of how conversations could go if you are white as opposed to when you are black. This is nonsensical. ANY trait/occupation/hobby/political view/etc can be used to make this distinction depending on the situation. You can replace black/white in this scenario with gamer/jock/meathead/princess/gold digger/banker/teacher/redhead/disabled/etc. IF the people around you view this perceived quality of yours to have a negative connotation they can "spoil" the conversation. So he created a philosophy of hatred aimed at real contributors to society by appealing to other non contributing cowards by telling them they were oppressed because someone else had more power and was more successful than they were. So essentially, Cultural Marxism is a philosophy for the weak who would rather blame other more successful people for their personal failures rather than getting off of their asses and accomplishing something on their own.

Racism = power + Prejudice is problematic to me. When I put forward the example, “If an African Manager of a company declines to employ a White person because they’re White is that racism on the part of the manager?” The answer is often, “it’s not racism, it’s prejudice because the manager doesn’t have political power.” (Or something along those lines). This off-the-cuff answer is filled with holes. Redefining it is as full of holes as redefining men as women and women as men. If anything people should coin a new term to sum up the meaning being conveyed.

F Fu makes sense. Plus I always find it interesting how privileged white men are always the ones who are trusted to decide what is and isn’t racism. Society perceives black people to want to use racism as an excuse. For that reason people who have never experienced or been disadvantaged by it are “qualified” to talk about it

@@kieranc6841 Jews are a ethnoreligious group. It is a religion and also a distinct ethnic group. Nazis didn't just discriminate against Jews based on their religion. There was most definately a racial aspect to their hatred towards the Jews which you can clearly see in the propaganda of the time. If you don't know this go read some books. It isn't difficult to educate yourself on this, there is a lot of literature on it.

If you define racism as treating people different according to their ethnicity or race, you will never “solve” racism. It’s human nature. Human beings feel comfortable and identify with people who look them, speak like them and share a common culture with. And therefore treat them differently. If your tribe is inhabiting an area 100, 000 years ago, and some strangers mass along your village.....that was a real threat to your existence. It has been engraved into our DNA over the millennia. And it’s not restricted to white people. Try living in Chinatown or little Vietnam as a non Asian, you will be treated differently. Try living in Parts of east Los Angeles as a non Hispanic, you will be treated differently, Glendale, Watts, etc. The best option going forward in a multi ethnic country like the US, is to find common values or shared culture, and rally behind that, and expand that to set a base. If not, we will be in a perpetual state of mistrust and hostility towards one another.

No but you don't understand the fucking point of the left is to take away all shared values. It's that there is no such thing as being able to communicate 1v1 with someone because "You're a fucking white male." It's to take away any sense of responsibility or morals. It's post modernism.

There is such a thing as taking on the traits of the oppressor. We, in this country have been raised in this country hearing and filtering words and actions that either help or hurt others, all of us-it gives a sense of being powerful.

The ELA teachers at my school teach this power + prejudice definition of racism. I teach social studies and I try to balance it out by giving them both definitions and providing the historical context they came out of. I also remind them to always define their terms of an argument, so we can be clear how words are being used.

@julianfischer1485

@@kari1303 Race, ethnicity and culture offer different privileges, or advantages, or things of value. Specific to race: Blacks tend to have more muscle mass that can help them excell at certain sports like sprinting or football. This varies with ethnicity (ex. Ethiopians are generally not built this way, but tend to excell in long distance running). Culturally, blacks often grow up with elements of African culture like dance, certain kinds of music and traditions that people of other races may not be exposed to (this is privilege). Some blacks grow up with certain values in their family depending on where they are from. Nigerian American immigrant families for example, tend to value personal responsibility and formal education more than other groups. In terms of overlap between poor communities and blacks: blacks who grow up in households with many siblings are given opportunities to develop social skills and intimacy in ways that middle class children in smaller households are not.

We created rock and all the other music you love but we only have Rap (barely). Idk man I don’t really care about this kind of shit but I’m just saying it’s disrespectful to just dismiss the truth. If I'm not mistaken this 'redefinitiom of rasicm' that he cites is actually the text book definition for rasicm in sociology. Now this is not the way we generally use the term racism in everyday conversations but in the actual study of society or social constructs and behavior, power is something that is taken into account. Now you will find people out there who use the scientific definition as a justification to be hateful to people on the basis of race whether or not that person is considered part of a minority. This is not ok in any way shape or form.

Affirmative action is privilege
@omo2786
5 жыл бұрын
Elliot Rodger having below par schools and living in areas that lack the facilities that your peers have is being under privileged. Yet people don’t want to take note of that factor. Race represents social class so when affirmative action helps black people that’s with the accurate assumption that the majority of black people have less privileges education wise than Asians. It evens out the playing field. I don’t necessarily agree with it but if we want to solve discrimination in education let’s start at the root of the problem and that’s giving everyone equal opportunity from day 1 not revoking a system that helps diversify higher education.
@anthonymalcolmcalan

Affirmative action isn't privilege. It's an ineffective way of fighting privilege. Look at how underfunded schools are in black areas. Look at the advantages that the white/suburban students have from day 1. I don't like affirmative action because I don't think it's effective to try to even the playing field AFTER the black students have already gone through the inner city school systems. But when you say affirmative action is priviledge that's wrong because you're completely ignoring the reality of our world that leads to affirmative action being there in the first place.

@@omo2786 .... What exactly makes a school below par? Money? Public schools are predominantly made up of and paid for by the people of that same community. Moreover, most importantly, there are "white communities" across the country that receive far less funding per student that those in the "less privileged" black inner-city communities, and they don't have the same crazy drop-out rates that had to be bent by lower academic standards so that's not a good enough explanation. Quality of education has everything to do with the environment in which children are learning... I'm assuming you agree.... and what is that environment often like? Do know that many schools are now having to hire teachers from outside the US to work in those schools? Why? Because often those jobs are fkt up. Teachers have always had to get by with not enough unfortunately, not now they, and kids who actually want to learn, have to deal with a large contingency shyty people who have free reign to ruin it for everyone else. So what really is the privilege? That white schools have less of those people to contend with? Is that your point? More money would solve this problem? There have always been poor people... always... but their kids weren't taking crazy fist fighting the fkin teachers man. There is a problem, but it's a paradox of black people contributing heavily to their own demise. Calling white people "privileged" as if they are "given" freely something that others can't possibly earn themselves isn't honest, and most importantly it's not helpful because it doesn't describe the actual problems in any way. If one kid earns a spot in a university on merit, and doesn't get it because another is given it for the sake of some obscure concept of "diversity".... which means not white or Asian.... that's a privilege.
