At the end, when he adds his ‘right hand pinky’ it feels impossible to even practice. Your’e already hammer tapping with you’re index and ring finger. Adding another hammer tap with my pinky finger makes me realize it’s not even worth practicing. As if my right hand index, and middle finger tapping shouldn’t awkward enough from someone whos practiced fretboard gymnastic stuff since 80s almost everyday for decades. Olympic Fastfret competition race.. Agony of defeat.

Good dude, great player. That style and technique is like a gift. You either been doing since you was very young and it's now like second nature to do. Or just don't attempt it because it will never sound as smooth and flowing as he's doing it. It's just not a natural, flowing way to play music. I can tap very well and even for a 22 year player like myself, this technique is utterly useless to try and use. It's just always going to sound weak and messy, no matter how many hours or months you put into it. The ring finger on your right hand dominantly always wants to move parallel with the index and middle finger. And the height differences between fingers is a major factor in conjunction to the odd way you need to bend your hand/wrist while doing it. Unless your ring finger is at least 3/4 of an inch to 1 full inch shorter than your index finger, just don't even waste your time trying. It's a technique that people with odd hands, strange finger lengths and double joints can pull off. Also women usually can do this fairly easy as they have very short ring fingers. Joel plays it wonderfully because its like his *signature* move. He's been trying it and perfecting it since he was a kid. And the no pick thing while tapping is a major nope for me. Always keep your pick in your hand or (if you really must) hold it with your mouth. So the question is, are you willing to try this technique every day, 4 hours every day, for the next 20 years just to be able to use it in one or two solo's that nobody really is going to care about? After a month of easily 120 hours of trying it I can honestly say NOPE. The concept is simple. The idea is a no brainer to understand. But to make it fast and still sound clean and smooth?... Good luck.

Bryan Millan a few tips... For one, make sure you’re tapping correctly. Pulling down slightly as you let the string go. Make sure you’re muting the unused strings with your left hand if you’re using a distorted sound. Also, make sure the action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard) isn’t too high. All in all, if your right hand hammer ons and pull offs sound fine, your tapping should sound fine too, as long as you’re muting. If this doesn’t help and you still have lots of noise or something, let me know.

Ugh, still don't quite get even the basic tapping. I lack details, like how hard am i supposed to press the string, how do i avoid other strings, and other such triffles. It really bugs me tho, tapping seems cool and i have a cyber-punk-y song idea that could use some tapping, yet my attempts seem to end up in frustration and failure. I either get unintelligible sound or terrible sound, i can't seem to trigger the string properly, and pulling off is difficult without triggering nearby strings in an unpleasant manor. Does anyone have any suggestions?
@davebolden4355

practice slowly. very slowly at first. a metronome helps you with establishing time. i never really used one when i was learning but i have in more recent years and really see the merit of having one. patience, relax and just keep practicing. it can be done with a light and precise touch. your pulloffs should flick the string to the side slightly to get them to ring out better. precision is what to focus on, the speed comes in time. some people are naturals(not me) others have to work harder for it but most can do this stuff if they want it bad enough. practice constantly and just relax. frustration can hinder progress. good luck dude
