The song doesn't deal with karma at all; rather, it refers to John Lennon's resentment because he was being attacked by many people for the things he was doing with Yoko Ono. In other words, the last thing this song is about is karma; it's used as a "defense" method, as if to say, "you'll get what's coming to you later." Perhaps Lennon was suffering from paranoia at that time; that's the most likely explanation. Let's remember that in 1969, he said in an interview that he thought he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, which is why he grew a beard and long hair. That was the reason, unbelievable as it may seem; that's how messed up his mind was at that moment. But well, that's the idol of many, and it's understandable for some of the other things he did.

Well, he knew he was good, but he also knew fan-boys like you would exaggerate about how good... "the greatest rock voice in history" is just lionizing. John had a richly emotive voice and he certainly made the most of it, but his range wasn't great and he wasn't a naturally great singer, or even the kind of technician that could blow you away with the first take, like Elvis or Roger Daltry or Paul Rodgers or others. Paul was a better technician as a singer than John, but I get it, we all love Lennon, "and your bird can sing". Did Lennon ever address it, to your knowledge? Have you heard the opening of “Tin Soldier” back-to-back with “Instant Karma”, though? The fact that it’s the same instrumentation and the same key (and also just octaves, or at least just power chords, rather than full chords) makes the resemblance far more uncanny than it is with “Some other guy”. This shows that there is a direct line from Lennon's voice to that of Kurt Cobain...well, i like to think that.

@@ikemreactsI wish Kurt had. Both Lennon and Cobain had perfect rock voices if we measure rock by intensity, which is what it has to offer and which is different to any other kind of singing.

Instant Karma has a lot of delay effect but it does not have the wall of sound technique. The wall of Sound was produced by adding a bunch of instrument on top of each other. Here there is only piano drums and bass and a delay effect that Lennon used to love.

I'm surprised how one-sided all the top comments are in praising John's vocals and criticizing/disregarding Phil Spector and the finished product. All due respect for John's performance, he had a great voice (though partly thanks to shredding his vocal chords in Hamburg, which in a happy accident, have him that raspy scream we all know and love). And the intentional clipping/distortion sheds light on where people like Jack White and Julian Casablancas got their sensibilities from on raw vocal tracks (and by extension, the legions of - granted, mostly mediocre - 2000's garage rock bands that followed in their wake)... Nevertheless, this sounds like a bedroom recording. If you don't care for the wall of sound treatment, fine.. You're entitled to your (objectively bad) opinion. But let's not forget, there's a reason the song was not released in this state. Sure, even if in some godforsaken hypothetical universe, he actually wanted to... no established record label would have allowed it, especially in the pre-indie era.. not for Jesus, John Lennon, anybody... but that's a given and therefore irrelevant... what is relevant, is that John could have hired any producer on the planet. He could have hired a whole army of producers and rented out an entire arena to record the album in (although let's get real, no one could possibly be both THAT rich AND retarded at the same time.. right?). He could have just said "fuck it, I can fiddle with some nobs" and done it himself... By 1970 he was definitely familiar enough with a studio to do so, Paul did exactly that on his first solo album which came out that same year... So there's a reason he hired Phil Spector to lend his magic touch to the track (more accurately, RE-hired - and despite Phil's questionable and unauthorized overdubs on the original Let it Be album, no less - which all makes for an especially strong endorsement from John).. John may have been, and still remains the star in the eyes of the masses (you don't see Phil Spector's face on t shirts.. granted, the murder conviction didn't help that situation.. and even so, the case is bleaker yet for all the other unsung heroes here like Klaus Voorman and Alan White, who I'm only mentioning here as an afterthought, after basically writing this entire comment), but Phil was a producer to the stars.. A star to the stars if you will.. He produced a good chunk of All Things Must Pass as well, playing an indispensable role in the making of hands down the best solo Beatle album (fight me fuckers).. And before all that, his production literally MADE stars (or one-hit wonders at the very least). Even for those like me who did not live through the era, his name is never more than a few degrees of separation (or if you prefer, a few clicks down a wikipedia rabbit hole) from virtually any popular artist of his day. A quick look at his resume in this period only contributes to the conspiracy that he literally shit gold records (though Mythbusters finally proved it's physically impossible for the human body to produce or expel a 45 single)... That aside.. At his peak, he was in peoples' ears arguably as much as the Beatles, albeit not in their eyes.. His production methods were both immediately accessible, if not irresistible.. as well as revolutionary to those in his field.. the trademark wall of sound is unquestionably one of the most influential and iconic production styles in the history of recorded music.. And that's the same reason his contribution here (as well as the other performers, which John also chose himself), should not be overlooked. That's like looking at a picture of a sprout, and acknowledging the seed alone for the flower, and ignoring rain and soil and shiet (that's the best analogy I could pull out of my ass).. Cuz, again, this cut has value by association, as a historical artifact... in the same way that an artist's sketches acquire value by association in the context of the finished painting... But its value, its entire existence, is 100% owed to the quality/success of the original context in which we all heard it first. Raw/demo takes and isolated tracks like this would not exist otherwise.. Nobody cares about raw tracks from Joe Schmoe and the So and So Band.. And though John Lennon was no Joe Schmoe (apologies to any Joe Schmoes reading this), this song would never have seen the light of day if it was left in this state.. let alone endured in the public consciousness to this day.. And when all is said and done if I'm just listening for pleasure (as I have been known to do), I'm sure as hell not pulling up this version... Not in a million years.. Anywho, that's my piece. RIP John, Phil Spector, Alan White, etc.. p.s. god damn you Mark David Chapman, for shooting the wrong fucking one, four fuckin times in a row.. and you were already 12 years too late to save the Beatles ya piece of shit.. God gave you one job, and thanks to you Yoko Ono is still at large to this day... reaping the fruits of John's estate, and still conning the occasional unsuspecting venue owner into booking her to play 'music', only to throw tantrums like a 2 year old until some merciful soul manages to unplug her microphone.. Shame on her fans, (nearly a dozen in all, according to an international database of the world's most heinous criminals), consisting of the world's foremost trolls, edgelords, and masochists alike... as well as John, whose Asian fetish was so debilitating it caused him to actually hear music instead of Yoko, thus giving her a facade of legitimacy, preventing her from being identified as a powerful demon succubus, (known in japanese folklore to appear once every 100 years or so, with the explicit purpose of possessing great musicians, causing their subsequent work to suffer greatly in quality), and ultimately protecting her from being tied to a rocket and launched directly into the sun, which the United Nations voted in favor of in an unprecedented 100% consensus, in 256 consecutive sessions, before an incredibly airtight and thorough portion of John's will, (totaling 96 pages and proofread by scores of master debaters and the best lawyers money could buy, or more accurately, be persuaded to hold their contempt for Yoko in exchange for a private island or two), which finally brought a moratorium to the discussion, much to the dismay of all mankind.. Not even Chuck Berry's visible disgust could slap some sense into him (he also took John aside immediately after and slapped him a few times, to no avail).. And as a result, John's solo work was inconsistent, surpassing only Ringo (by default).. I'll listen to All Things must Pass, or Band on the Run, or Ram, front to back... but Yoko's exploitation of John's extreme condition so conquered his life that he could only manage to hit the mark on the occasional single..
