Setting aside the exhausting diabolic technique, this performance is uncomparable. Nothing is ever unintentional with John Williams. This is pure controlled emotion - beauty-art - his phrasing is moving and his meta-articulation unbeatable.

I am Paraguayan and very proud of it. I think that you should not forget that Agustín Pío Barrios was the best classical guitar player of all time and one of the best musicians as well. Barrios maybe in that time did not have all the tv show and broadcast etc that the artists of today have. Many of his works are exams in guitar schools in Germany. Country of the greatest musicians of all time like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and many others.

The video quality is piss poor but I'm 58 and when a young music student at Sydney Conservatorium this tape, the tape had Williams playing other Barrios pieces at what seems to be the same recital/concert did the rounds of all of us guitar students. While guys like Bream really have you on the edge of your seat 'cause they fly so close to the wind you wonder if today they'll fall but Williams gives you absolute confidence and power. I freely admit to spending many an hour in front of the mirror getting my right hand as close to his as I could, and the difference in sound is really noticeable and well worth the extra effort. His left hand is his safety net. Failsafe !!

I really like Azabagic's version too. However, I think calling Willam's version "rubbish" is a bit harsh. He's certainly one of the world's best guitarists. Just because he has mainstream success and recognition doesn't mean that guitarists can't appreciate him. I know it is our tendency to favor more obscure guitarists, but you can't take anything from Williams' success.

I've never been able to find out where Williams got this version but it is the best edition that I have heard. It might be from Jason Waldron (Australian guitarist that transcribed Barrios from his recordings in the 70s). I play this version and had a hand written photocopy that was allegedly written out by Williams. I have put it into "Finale" so if you like I can send it to you. If you don't have finale you can download the free viewer to read and print finale files on your browser.

Saludos.
