Super Castlevania IV is just one of those games that feels "right" to play. Sure, the control isn't 100% perfect, but it's pretty damn close. No other Castlevania game has ever let you use the whip the way this game has, which to me makes it the most fun. The whip is a weapon almost unique to Castlevania, and it's sad that there's only one game in the series that uses it to its full potential.

Good job on the review. Here is an interesting bit of trivia for those of you who don't know. Konami decided to be funny with the stage 4 bosses by naming them Puwexil and Koronot. Just look at their name backwards, and you will see that their names actually suit them since Puwexil attacks with his tounge, and Koronot is a bunch of rocks thrown together.

This is in my opinion the best old school Castlevania game. I know a lot people think Rondo of Blood is the best one do to it's multiple pathways that lead to alternate levels, outstanding graphics and music and a "deeper" story than previous games in the series, but if you ask me its no were near as fun as Super Castlevania 4. Rondo of Blood has some stiff controls (and I know Maria plays better but when I play as her, it doesn't feel like Castlevania) and again your attacks are limited to what is in front of you unless you have a specific sub weapon. The control in SC4 is just so smooth and fluid that it doesn't feel cheap when you die (usually). When I die in Rondo of Blood, I often find myself cursing in frustration, and I do that in SC4 as well but most of the time when I die, I feel like the game just beat me, and then I say to myself "I'll get you next time". It's just more fun to play. Sure, it's easy by Castlevania standards but by Castlevania standards, easy is a relative term, best replaced with "Least Difficult".
@GeneralErlend
9 жыл бұрын
I honestly like Rondo better. The problem I have with CV4 is that, while it controls smoothly, it is way too easy. The only stages I have problems with what so ever is the last 2 or 3 stages wich are the only stages that results in Game Over. The rest of the game is a cakewalk. I rarely ever even use subweapons because the whip is so superior in most cases with the exception of certain bosses. The bosses in CV4 are also not as fun or well designes as many of the ones you encounter in Rondo, and instead of using satisfying dodges that are necessary to beat the bosses, in CV4 you can pretty much just mash the attack button and win as long as your HP bar is full. I am strictly speaking of Rondo and Dracula X Chronicles here though, not Dracula X (although that game is also good, it isn't as good as CV4 or Rondo). And lastly, Dracula in CV4 is a complete joke. I beat him on my second try without using any subweapons (I don't think I used any subweapons anyway). Don't get me wrong though, CV4 is a fantastic game that I to this very day still play whenever I dig up the SNES, but in old school Castlevania being hard is a necessity for me to be an even more amazing game. I still have a problem deciding wether CV1 or CV4 is the better game. On the one hand, you have a game that is hard for pretty much all the wrong reasons, and on the other you have a game that is way too easy. Rondo to me was pretty much perfect in that regard, because it doesn't have many cheap deaths like CV1, but it isn't as fluent in the controls as CV4 or the bosses too much of a button masher.
@anuarhc
9 жыл бұрын
GeneralErlend Yeah i feel the same way, RoB has the best from the NES entries, branching paths, sidequests, unlockable charachter, difficulty and the OST stays more loyal to the NES games with catchy yet awesome tunes like Slash, Cross a Fear, Den, Divine Bloodlines, Opus 13, Picture of a Ghost Ship and damn Dance of Illusions, while with SCVIV i can just remember the Simon's Theme because the game OST is more atmospherical, while isn't that exactly bad it wasn't quite the formula to CV Music. Yes, the game is pretty much a cakewalk, i can remember dying just before the Frankestein disappearing platforms, other than that there is no thinking while facing the bosses because of the versatility of the whip and it's speed, you don't even need to search for a subweapon or even upgrade your whip as long as you have full health you can mash the button in the right direction and bam done. Dracula fight was superdissapointing to me first it has to be the easiest Drac ever, second it lacks of transformation, third it was really necessary to put that 99 hearts, 3x Cross, all whip upgrades and full health before that fight? And if isn't enough Dracula freaking heals you wtf! RoB on the other hand brings the things that Castlevania were know before, and it also has bunch of innovations, it got rid of the annoying timelimit, when is gameover you see Richter burst in blood and then you have the Game Over screen right there rather than just a black screen, you have the Chain Whip from start with no upgrades, the backflip, jumping on stairs, money it's useful to BUY not freaking points, if you lose your Cross for a freaking Knife you can get it back no prob, the bosses have this finishing move after you have beaten them, it has the bossrush with all the classic CV1 bosses + Shaft, throwbacks to previous games like the glitch in CV1 Throne Room stairs, Maria has this streetfighter OP move, and a handful of little secrets. Overall maybe Konami knew that CV3 was goddamn hard and they decided to lay low with SCVlV, as you say, it is no near to a bad game but it is way too easy, maybe if Simon had the Richter moveset would more be interesting, i think that it gets so much diamonds and praise just because RoB wasn't a worldwide release.

Anuar Moreno I agree with you. Also in Rondo, the knife was not a total loss (throwing three knives and the item crash is great if you don't already have the holy water). IV was great, but its fame mostly came from the fact that it was released internationally (unlike Rondo which waited until 2007 to make an official English release... which is still awesome with its overwhelmingly hard third form of Dracula). :)

I consider Rondo of Blood and Super Castlevania IV as the two best Vanias in the series (meaning no Metroidvanias). Rondo of Blood was more reminiscent of the old CV games, but adding way more things that made it awesome. Both Rondo and IV had a "no bullshit" feeling when you died, and both are awesome in their own rights. Rondo had multiple pathways and an overall massive replayability compared to IV. I know IV had all the whip swinging, but the whip really tones down the need for subweapons. In Rondo, subweapons give you advantages and disadvantages in levels so that you either learn to do it without it or get it to make your life easier (adding more replayability). But the biggest differences is in the soundtrack and graphics. Rondo had a much better soundtrack (being on a CD, so it made everything better). And Rondo had amazing and memorable sprites (so amazing that almost every game after had those sprites somewhere in the game). And then on top of that Rondo had a better palette and backgrounds. As for the level design, I think you can't really choose between the two because both games are just amazing. IV is great, but the omnidirectional whip and midair movement pretty much changed the formula to make it relatively easy (not to say that it isn't hard). Rondo just used the classic formula and added so much more. I'd say both need to be checked out, but if there was a choice between the two I'd say Rondo is the one all because of its soundtrack, graphics, and replayability. :)

I'm pretty much the same feeling as u have. They're both great. But I do like RoB an little bit more. Yeah. SC4 has the better controls and whiping any direction is great. But I feel like RoB has better level designs & replay values. And I also think RoB has the best difficulty curve out of the classical style Castlevania games. Not saying an easy game makes it bad. But I do feel like SC4 does have alot of the " piece of cake " moments due to the whip direction & doesn't rely in sub weapons alot. Minus the Cross & Time Stop. Though to be fair, some like the Axe, Knife & even the Fire Bomb; which was great back than and does get better in RoB & onwards, are still pretty lame and don't have amount of impact. Again. Both are great in there own rights. But I do prefer RoB an little bit more.

Mike is around since the first episode. He just won't appear because he had a way minor role in the show, but still, his part was essential to the beeing what he is now. What "killed" AVGN for me is the absence of episodes, but i think that James wants to do other things rather than just The Nerd. There's his AVGN movie too, so the lack on quality episodes must be because of that.

I've never actually played a pre-metroidvania Castlevania game. After watching this, that will change. Though Symphony of the Night will always be my favorite, as I'm a Metroid fan.

Get them! First, if you have a PSP, GET THE DRACULA X CHRONICLES! It has Rondo of Blood (in English), Symphony of the Night (with some added content) and a 2.5D remake of Rondo all in one game. It's about $32-$35. If you have a Wii U, then you can play all of the main ones except for Bloodlines. 1, 2, and 3 are on both the Wii U and 3DS. Super Castlevania IV, Rondo of Blood (through the Wii menu), and Dracula X are on the Wii U. There are also Castlevania: The Adventure on the 3DS and The Adventure ReBirth on Wiiware (like Rondo, only accessible through the Wii menu on the Wii U). Even if you don't have a PSP, 3DS, Wii U or any of the original systems, Castlevania 1 is also on the GBA. Just to be clear, neither Rondo nor Adventure ReBirth are available on the Wii anymore, because Nintendo WFC has been discontinued.

Though I am not a fan of castlevania games I believe Castlevania has really awesome soundtracks, aspecially Super Castlevania IV's soundtracks. Even the gameplay is actually pretty good in my opinion... I hope they release a Castlevania V like the old game style and not like todays once

There's no checkpoints on the death trio battle? I'm pretty sure I got game over against every boss and I could continue at the start of the boss I lost against respectively. Perhaps it's because I played the game on the VC? Awesome review like always johnny, looking forward bloodlines!

You should have called the Clock Tower "A Clockwork Orange." That would have made so much sense!

I personally found Castlevania IV way too easy. It definitely had moments of challenge but the game didn't give me a hard time overall. I also think the "improvements" to his controls actually hinder the game a bit, you just have so much control over your character that I never really find any difficulty in the platforming. It's still a good game but I found 1 and 3 (and Rondo of course, Rondo's my favorite) to be better entries.

I think Rondo of Blood has the best difficulty curve. It isn't anything remotely easy like SC4 due to the whip direction & fluid controls. But it's also doesn't have any amount of BS or brutal moments that the NES Trilogy has. Especially in Castlevania 3.

Congrats, now you've got me hooked into another game series. First Metroid, then Portal (the BrainScratch playthrough), now Castlevania. :D Also, I was wondering. With your month of games, you seem to only do the classics. Excluding Metroid, but that has hardly any games. Still, maybe sometime you could do a modern month of Sonic, going through the mainstream games to Shadow the Hedgehog or Secret Rings, or maybe a Modern Month of Mario, going to... Um... I'm not sure. But anyway, I know you'r

@shadowrunner431 For completion's sake, I suppose. Although that's a moot point unless EVERYTHING ELSE (maybe excluding the 3D games) is also reviewed. Meaning: The Adventure, The Adventure ReBirth, Rondo of Blood, Dracula X, Belmont's Revenge, Legends, Chronicles, Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, Harmony of Despair, The Dracula X Chronicles, Haunted Castle, Vampire Killer, the Kid Dracula spin-off (possibly), etc.

I like castlevania 4 because its good for newcomers, its challenging but not unfair and the game has, really nice music from the NES trilogy, and orginal music of its own, and other things said in this video. AND that why i love CV4 more than ANY other castlevania games, even Rondo of Blood. ;) Thank you.

I can see why you prefer Rondo of Blood compared to Super Castlevania 4. If anything, it seems like Rondo of Blood is the spiritual successor to the classics, as it sorta maintains the difficulty curve that the third game had, ranging from the restricted whip controls to the level gimmicks. But goddamn that Dracula fight (the SNES version, not the one you did for BSC) is freakin' HARD
