Jojo plays over the barline which is the probably the most difficult approach to choose when playing in 17/8. It might not be perfect at all times but he's developing very nice ideas in real time, that's what improvisation means to me. It means also taking risk and believe me it's damn hard to play that dance beat against the other guy's parts. Jojo does it really nice because he can hear both at the same time: the 4/4 and the 17/8. I can tell that by the way he plays really steady but at the same time he's still hittin those unisono accents with the other guys. That's the hard thing about this tune: You got to be able to hear it

you put what i was thinking in words! it also goes without mention that the other two musicians are just as talented in their own ways because they're managing to keep the 17/8 baseline even though jojo is playing the 4/4 'over the barline' groove. it definitely takes a lot of individual listening and isolation skills

+Adam Škňouřil This would be essentially samba variations, which there are a lot of patterns, with a hint of jazz at some points.

Jojo sounds lost in this piece. He couldn't find the beat . He began to play some DnB snare hi-hat combo then stopped - it's as if he just gave up and started banging away on his floor Tom . He's one of my favorite drummers! Jojo needs to brush up on his Latin, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian beats.

Wendell Holmes Jr. Keep in mind that the standard samba beat is in 2/4 and this song is displaced in 17/16, which offsets the beat by 1 16th note.

What does that have to do with the fact he sucks at playing this music? Go listen to Justin Tyson play with this same band. Maybe JoJo wasnt prepared and didnt know music.

Wendell Holmes Jr. Couldn't find any videos of said drummer playing this song, so there's no measuring stick avaliable. As for him sucking...He plays samba better than many other drummers, including Brazillian ones.

felipeadhoc it's not samba. it's dance music, sort of like a mimicking of electronic music
