The 2nd largest drop ever for a movie released by a major studio. And the 20th largest ever for any movie without any qualifiers. Thanks for another movie math grace! That would open the demand for other genres - detective, sci fi, fantasy, romance etc, it would be too crowded. I think horror suffers from a specific problem - the acting is generally about terrified people, so maybe that could be a nom for a specific performance in a horror movie, acting or directing, rather than a genre itself. Just like LOTR was nominated not because it was a fantasy, but because it was great directing, acting, script etc

Fun fact: both Terrifier 2 and Smile came out the same time in October back in 2022, and both films flourished because they’ll appeal to different aspects of horror. Terrifier appealed to the fringe gory exploitation crowd while Smile felt like a prestige slickly-produced studio horror with a great premise. And I feel both films will flourish even better this month. And i wished yon emphasize this in your write up for Terrifier 3 coverage. This film cost $2 million, it’s unrated and it grew from organic growth over years of both films dominating streaming services and social media. This is a great calling for writer/director and special effects specialist Damien Leone (demonstrating excellent budget and filmmaking skills), actress and final girl glow up Lauren LaVera, and ART HIMSELF, David Howard Thorton. I hope all 3 creatives get considered for wider studio fare because they have leveled up from indie fandom to mainstream status with this #1 box office win.

It's a grim, nihilistic exercise in crime/drama/musical storytelling about the personal ramifications of celebrity life, its effect on dignity & identity... sold as a regressive, metafictional sequel to one of the most popular DC standalone movies of all time. How do you properly advertise such a concept? How does it get 200 million spent on it? Is it even a responsible risk to take in the midst of a badly damaged brand? So many doubts I would've thrown against it... and yet the movie exists. No wonder it failed but wow am I just in awe of the fact it even dared to try.

The fact of the matter is: As long as studios give audiences the quick digital option, the box office is just going to continue to look like this, only with further deteriorating results. If the theater isn’t the only place to watch the movie, more and more audiences will choose to watch that movie at home. Theaters can build arcades and bowling alleys, but the fact of the matter is still going to remain true. Sure we may have a few hits like DP&W, Inside Out 2, and Beetlejuice, but it won’t be consistent. That’s why the bottom half of the top 10 is always terrible, because all those movies are already available at home. And yes, tickets are crazy expensive and audience behavior is horrible, and streaming is also an option, but as long as this is the theatrical model that continues, it’s only going to get worse from here.

I think for Heartstopper it’s a combination of things: poor advertising, Joe fans focusing on Agatha, cynical people in the demographic not necessarily giving it a chance, and notably I think its own fandom and how it’s treated the two leads is off putting as well
