The 90s are unique in that there are 2 types of alternative rock that sprouted out of that decade. The heavier, grungy type which has the likes of Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, then there's this type of easy-listening alternative rock. Now 2 songs embody that 2nd alternative rock type. Toad The Wet Sprocket's "All I Want", and Gin Blossoms' "Hey Jealousy. Listening to any of those 2 songs instantly flashes me back to the early 90s. Good times man. I'm so proud to be a 90s kid

As the Gin Blossoms experienced mounting success performing songs he had written, Hopkins became increasingly despondent.[2] Although he had always dreamed of having a gold record, when he received one (for the song "Hey Jealousy"), he hung it up for two weeks before taking it down and then destroying it. Nine days later, during an intake consultation in the detox unit of Phoenix's St. Luke's Hospital, Hopkins snuck out and bought a .38 caliber pistol. The next day, December 5, 1993, Hopkins committed suicide

There are wonderful bands in every decade, including now. However, I must say that it feels (to me anyways), that a lot of "artists" nowadays are not so much artists, as much as actors. It is all about the "show". Which is great. But what happened to it being about it being about the music? That is why I think the 90s alternative scene was so great. Look how they are dressed. They don't care about image. They care about you getting lost in the sound. Not the onstage "presence".

jtcj11 It's a sad story. But according to what I've read he wasn't functional at all. His drinking had gotten bad enough to where he couldn't play well in the studio or at live shows. The band had a record deal and obviously weren't going to give it up just cause of Doug Hopkins drinking problem so they had to replace him. That's just good business sense, the show must go on, etc. Unfortunate, but that's how it worked out.

+jtcj11 Or they could have kept Doug in the group and let HIM screw THEM. Yes, Doug wrote some great songs, but what good are they if no one hears them because you can't pull yourself out of the bottle. Whatever drove Doug to the bottle in the first place is really what led to his death.

+Jack1979 They may have screwed him somewhat with the legal stuff, but they really had no choice but to kick him out of the band. He was apparently half in the tank a lot of the time.
