Born in 1939 in Elizabeth, NJ, I grew up with this song. My mother particularly loved the voice of Josh White. So we had his recording, not Robeson's. I've just found this and re-played it, since the record disappeared long ago. Thanks to whoever made it available. I know it by heart, since for me it's always been words and music and I love my native land. For 50 years I've lived in Sydney, Australia, following my marriage to an Aussie. At age 77 I can't get back to the US. The journey is too arduous.

This was one of the few records my parents owned and I--growing up in the early 1950's--used to play it constantly. I couldn't play it without feeling very sad...The message was so poignant and haunting. I guess I realized the irony that in the 50's, when I listened to this song, I realized that "the goodness everywhere" had not yet really been achieved in the U.S.

What is America to me A name, a map, the flag I see A certain word: democracy What is America to me The house I live in And the friends that I have found The folks beyond the railroad And the people all around The farmer and the worker The sailor on the sea The men who built this country That's America to me The house I live in, My neighbors white and black The people who just came here Or from generations back The town hall and the soapbox The torch of Liberty A home for all God's children That's America to me. The words of old Abe Lincoln Of Jefferson and Paine Of Washington and Jackson And the task that still remains. Our little bridge at Concord Where Freedom's Fight began, Of Gettysburg and Midway And the story of Bataan. The house I live in, The goodness everywhere, A land of wealth and beauty With enough for all to share. A land that we call "Freedom", The home of Liberty, With its promise for tomorrow That's America to me
