A few months after this video was filmed, the singer, Ian Curtis hung himself, as he had epilepsy which was slowly getting worse... Joy Divisions second album '''Closer'', was essentially his last will and testament before he left us, back in 1980 aged 23 years.....

I think Joy Division were extraordinary - not always comfortable listening, but there's a real depth to them. The most incredible thing I've seen is Joy Division playing "She's Lost Control" on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Ian Curtis is like a man possessed. RIP Ian. He's in a failing relationship. No communication, no intimacy, no connection, no love. It parallels Ian Curtis's own relationship(s). Plus he suffered terribly with epilepsy - the "taste in my mouth" is a symptom of an oncoming fit. The lyrics were a cry for help that even his bandmates didn't get until it was too late. After his suicide, the rest of the band went on to become New Order - I forget whether you reacted to them already but please do if not.
@KevinStriker

The evolution of this band from Joy Division to New Order is one of the most fascinating in music. But even with their move to dance oriented music, they never forget their roots or Ian because so many of New Order's songs have dark themes contrasted with a dance beat ("True Faith" for example). Their early singles like "Ceremony" and "Procession", and New Order's debut album 'Movement' are the connective tissue between the post-punk/gothic rock sound and the new wave/alternative rock sound.

The singer, Ian Curtis wrote this song about his then failing marriage. As for the quality of the video? In his autobiography, Joy Division bassist Peter Hook stated that the band played the song live while they were being filmed because they felt it was silly to lipsync to a playback of the recorded version. This caused a nightmare for the video editor because he had trouble syncing up the recording with the footage.

Both The Cure (originally as the band The Easy Cure, before they reformed in 1978 as The Cure) and The Clash were founded in 1976 (the same year as Joy Division's original incarnation, Warsaw), so you can't say they had their roots in or were heavily infuenced by Joy Division (not to say there was no influence, but it would have been between peers, and not as a progenitor). The Clash were a total Punk band at the start, while both Joy Division and The Cure had differing styles (although all three had their roots in punk, and all contributed to the post-punk movement). Joy Division was a great band, but they were neither the sole influence in the New Wave movement, nor standing at the peak in the movement. Although they did have influence, it's highly exaggerated to say that "everyone" that got to see them went out and started their own band.

I think it is really cool that you checked out this song and Joy Division. Normally a dark band from Manchester with gloomier songs, this song was actually their take on humor. They were responding to the popularity of songs like "Love Will Keep Us Together", but they weren't being malicious. The lead singer, Ian Curtis led a troubled life (check out the movie "Control") and took his life right around the time of this song. But recording this song was a fun spot for the band, they had fun recording it. Ian was impersonating in his mind Frank Sinatra. I know you didn't like it, but they this was actually their least depressing song. I don't expect you to react to them again, however, I think it's great you at least gave them a listen.

They were at the forefront of a new style of music and eventually became electronic music’s forerunner, new order. New order is just as upbeat as Joy Division is dark And introspective. *_FINALLY_* you have made it to the true first step into the Post Punk/Goth world. Shame that you couldn't see the genius behind the song as you were focusing on the mood it was making you experience. We as human beings are built to experience a huge gamut of emotions. Not everything has to be "positive" or "happy" *_ALL_* the time. There is beauty in melancholia and darkness too. You just have to get out of that mentality that mainstream society has told you is "accepatable" and discard all your preconceived notions about things like music. *_THAT_* is why I have suggested listening to things outside the mainstream to you in a few other videos. I mean, you like Pink Floyd and you seem to have no qualms about their depressing music so... why not try and see the beauty and artistry in this? Food for thought, my friend... The true tragedy about this song is that it was pretty much Ian Curtis's (JD's singer) "Goodbye" note to his wife, Deborah (along with his only daughter, who was just an infant at the time). Ian Curtis's life was a lot more complex than what might come across in a song like this, which was released posthumously. To truly understand the true *_GENIUS_* of Ian Curtis and Joy Division (imho), one has to delve into their *_ENTIRE_* catalog of material which isn't too much, since Joy Division only made 2 studio albums (Curtis would then take his own life while alone in his apartment after arguing with his wife who left to stay with her parents - hanging himself in his kitchen in the early hours of May 18, 1980, on the eve of what was to be Joy Division's first ever American tour). I would suggest to anyone interested to simply start from the beginning, the album _'Unknown Pleasures'_ and before listening to the music, actually reading some of Curtis's lyrics. His lyrics are some of the most descriptive, creative, unique, thought-provoking, analytical and realistic lyrics I've ever heard - and mind you, all this was written when he was in his early 20's (and maybe even before). Many talk about well-known artists and musicians like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain etc. who all penned very popular music and died at age 27 but, it's a shame that Ian Curtis is far too often overlooked by most mainstream media in reference to famous lyricists. Curtis wrote lyrics that, to me, easily rival or even surpass what some of these other people wrote and all this again, by the time he takes his own life at the age of 23, four years before those in the so-called "27 Club". Reading his early lyrics all the way up to his final words penned for the song, _'In A Lonely Place',_ clearly show a person in declining mental health. _'In A Lonely Place'_ is basically a lyrical suicide note, which unfortunately, was never seen as that until afterwards. As a musician myself, I at 23 was not writing lyrics like that. Ian Curtis was a genius with words which not only *_told_* you a story, they made you *_SEE_* it. Rare gift for someone so young. Even now, I don't think I could ever write lyrics like that (if I could, I'd be a lot more successful at music). The world really did lose a giant in the music world. A giant the mainstream music media, in large part, has overlooked and ignored to their own shame... *_JOY DIVISION RULES... Ian Curtis - July 1956 - May 1980 - R.I.P..._* (P.S. The music seems sped up because originally, the video was shot with the band playing the original version of the song (which is a bit different) but, at the moment of release, there were problems with the sound and the final version of the video was released with the 12" single version of the song played instead of the original, hence the un-sync between the song and the band's hand movements and playing)

@@scottboswell6406 DISCLAIMER: This response is a bit long due to my wanting to give you a detailed reason for my post. Thanks for taking the time to read it, should you choose to... While I understand what you're saying and where you're coming from, I never meant any disrespect to him as a person or the type of person he is. It's a simple critique of his reaction to a song he deems as his "least favorite" song due to the emotions it conveyed, nothing more. As I stated, he's reacted to other melancholic music before (he even wept upon hearing Pink Floyd's _'Hey You'_ on his full album reaction to their _'The Wall'_ album) so, I found it odd that this song would rattle him and cause him to feel uncomfortable in a way that prevented him from enjoying the song. Not to mention, that album ('The Wall') dealt with issues of mental health and the stigma of those issues in today's society - something that Ian Curtis himself was struggling deeply with in his personal life and time as lead singer of Joy Division, to the point that it led him to take his own life, as most Joy Division fans know now. As for him (Jamel) living through and seeing negativity early on? I too grew up in a part of my city pretty much regarded as the ghetto part of town (it is basically regarded as that, even today) from a very early part of my childhood, up to my young adulthood. Thankfully, eventually I managed to get out of that environment, just as he did (though I suspect that like me, he didn't escape completely "unscathed" in some way or manner). Many others I grew up with weren't so "lucky". I was also lucky enough to avoid many of the hard pitfalls that others fell into from being arouind all of that. I'm sure *_TONS_* of other people have lived similar experiences and even worse ones than either of us. Having said that, that still didn't impede me from seeing the beauty in the darkness and despair that surrounded me and surrounds us all in everyday life. A life that realistically, is *_NEVER_* going to be "peaches & rainbows" all the time. Trying to keep things positive is good but, to try and keep negativity at bay all the time? Not so good. As most people know, that is not a realistic approach to life. My point was and is that this reaction to me simply felt out of character for him when on past videos, he's reacted to and embraced songs of a negative nature and taken their message in a positive way. I get that not everything is for everyone but for me, his reaction to this song and this band (which I am a huge fan of and suggested he react to in the past) just felt out of place and rather out of character when compared to his reactions to similar music of a melancholic and bleak nature. Hopefully, this doesn't dissuade him from enjoying other songs from Joy Division as well as other Post Punk/Goth bands that are similar in nature to Joy Division...

He might as well just stay away from other bands like The Cure, The Sisters Of Mercy, Siouxsie & The Banshees and others from the same genres as Joy Division. He should just commit to reviewing mainstream pop/rock cause that's what he seems most comfortable with, unfortunately.

When I saw the movie "Control" . My heart broke for him. The despair his epilepsy put him in, along with the whole situation surrounding his marriage. To be driven to end his own life, and the absolute crushing horror of his wife finding him. The loss of a father to their little girl. New Order's ending every concert with this song as an homage to their ex bandmate is such a wonderfu and fitting tribute!

Ok. Please just do more than this song. They have so much good stuff, and this is the only song that gets covered. PLEEEEEEZE. Disorder, Interzone, Dead Souls, She's Lost Control, Shadowplay, Decades, Transmission for starters. Now CEREMONY is the bridge between Joy Division and New Order, Ian Curtis wrote the lyrics and did record it but the record itself was re-recorded as New Order. JOY DIVISION is groundbreaking. Please dive in.

It's tough to dive into Joy Division with no preparation. This is the beginning of what today would be called goth music. Yes, it's depressing, reflecting the feelings of the artist. Less than two months after writing and recording this, singer Ian Curtis took his own life. This is actually one of their most upbeat and happy songs, check out Atmosphere or New Dawn Fades to hear when they get even darker. After Curtis' suicide, the band became New Order with the addition of keyboard player Gillian Gilbert. You would recognize their massive club hit Blue Monday

Other worthwhile Joy Division videos: (A)"Transmission" live version from BBC TV show (B) "Disorder" video swirling colors of a drive around Manchester. (C) "She's Lost Control" Remaster 2007 (audio only version). The band only put out two studio albums to go along with many notable singles. They existed for maybe 3 years. The lyrics are often dark and morose especially as the singer's depression got worse. Many people believe that the medication he was taking for epilepsy was making his depression worse. They influenced a lot bands that came after them. The music that they made has stood the test of time. However, the gloom and darkness isn't for everyone but if you focus on the interplay of the basslines, lead guitar riffs it does provide music to my ears.

Why woud anyone want an iconic band like Joy Division to be inducted into an organization that has nothhing to do with giving real due credit to the artists due to the fact that it's run by record company fatcats who got rich by fleecing pretty much all the artists it pretends to "honor"? Not to mention, it's full of people like this reactor who just won't and will NEVER "get" a band like Joy Division. I mean, to call it the least favorite song he reacted to was just mind-boggling and disappointing. This reactor has reacted to other mainstream rock songs of a dark and bleak nature and he gobbled them up eagerly but, somehow THIS song is TOO dark and depressing for him?? GIMME A BREAK. That's like someone saying they like a movie like Saving Private Ryan and praising it for it's brutal depictioin of the horrors of war and human tragedy AND THEN turning around and watching a movie iike ROCKY and saying they couldn't stomach it cause of the violent nature of boxing, the sad character of Rocky Balboa and it's bittersweet ending... Utterly ridiculous....
@arladicey

@@RiverOfBlacklights well, of course, not all songs, even if they are of a similar nature, are going to hit every person the same way. Personally, I think Jamel is pretty open to new influences, but not all sounds are going to be the same kind of miracle to his ears as others. I love Joy Division... but I also love New Order, who took a very different sonic path than they did with their late friend, Ian, and their former band with him. It's okay. There are tons of other musical styles to explore. Doesn't make Joy Division any less great or influential.

You’re absolutely right about it not being uplifting. It’s anything but uplifting. But sadly, it was written from a very real place in the life of Ian Curtis, whose own life ended very tragically. And I can’t overstate how influential this song was to much of the music released in the 80s and 90s and even later. The Cure and Interpol have a similar sound. And of course the creative outlet of Joy Division carried on after the death of Curtis when the group New Order was founded by members of the former. I appreciate you playing this and giving your honest reaction to it. And I especially appreciate your dedication to all things positive! 🙌🏻☺️

Ian Curtis committed suicide by hanging, 41 years and 16 days ago (18 May 1980). He was only 23. I was in 8th grade and my older brother had introduced me to Joy Division a year before. I developed a fascination for the band, and Ian in particular, that was (and still is) hard to describe. I was devastated by his death. A month after that there was a Languages' Week in my school, so I decided to pay homage to him by singing and playing A Means To An End on my electric guitar and reciting the lyrics to Love Will Tears Us Apart, all by myself on stage, in front of an audience of students and teachers. I was only 15.

This is an amazing song by an incredible band with a great but tragic frontman. As you noted, this song's name is in response to the popular Captain and Tenille song, Love Will Keep Us Together. The lead singer committed suicide on or about the day the song was released. The rest of the band basically stuck together, evolved, and renamed themselves New Order. New Order became one of the biggest electro-pop/alternative bands of the 80s and 90s like Depeche Mode and The Cure. Sorry you didn't care for it, it is considered a classic, and has served as an inspiration for a large number of bands and musicians (for example, Trent Reznor of Nine Ince Nails.) ~Be Blessed
