"Sad Wings" as Priest's second album still consisted of left-over songs and structures co-written by Rob Halford's predecessor Al Atkins mixed with newer material. The Al Atkins songs were adapted by Halford, both music- and lyrics-wise. As such it's not that strange that the album is a bit all over the place. 1977's "Sin After Sin" was more cohesive culminating in 1978's "Stained Class" which is still the Judas Priest record I like the most. Cheerio lass.

This album marks the transition from the hard rock/proto metal of early 70s to the more traditional heavy metal of the 80s. It is a massive influential album. The next two Judas Priest albums (Sin After Sin and Stained Class) push this envelop even further. This trio of albums consolidated heavy metal as we know it
@md244-w6v

eh, imo heavy metal was already a thing by 1970. what i will say about this album though is that it is metal in its purest & most defining sense. it dropped the blues influences and the heavy rock to just be metal. basically i’m arguing that metal & heavy metal was certainly a thing by the time this album came out, but this album reformed & refined the genre. its really special
@thanosmat

@@md244-w6v i agree. i used "proto metal" only to points the difference between the early 70s metal with blues influence. Even in Sad Wings Of Destiny there is some blues influence, but a lot less than early 70s metal. In Stained Class the blues is already gone

I think Judas Priest are vastly underrated, and never get mentioned in the same breath as bands like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. When you look at the years these albums were released, they were miles ahead of what would become NWOBHM. Plus they pretty much invented the whole biker aesthetic of the leather, the studs, etc that we still associate as being a metal look now. And the fact that Rob Halford took this look from gay clubs and introduced it to the big macho metal scene just makes it hilarious.

Judas Priest came onto our radar when one of my friends found an album in the 'marked down' milk crate at a record store (around 1977). It was the British version of Killing Machine, which was re-released in the US as Hell Bent for Leather with an additional song. Needless to say we immediately began investigating their backlog. I generally don't 'care for' live albums but Unleashed in the East is a beast.

Love this reaction. This album is top 3 for me. This album takes you on a long journey. If you listen close, you can hear the beginnings of many metal genres in this album. 1:58 Yes, at this point in their career, Priest were trying on a lot of different styles and techniques, and just about everyone was aping Zep in '76, right before disco and then punk rock blew up. 7:05 Just realized you're cutting on the beat! 7:56 That's a common first-time reaction on this track, but trust me: it's a grower. 14:47 Yeah, total drug-influenced lyrics. I think it's also about growing up in poverty, with few avenues for escape. Written by the vocalist prior to Halford, Al Atkins. 15:09 🤜🤛 18:44 No worries - your reactions while listening to Tyrant said it all. So glad you're enjoying Sad Wings! 18:54 That's the sound of a band looking to get noticed in a world of Zeppelins, Sabbs, and Purples, et al. 22:19 I like what you say about the album being less-than-cohesive, yet that when it's this good it hardly matters. Similarly, but with less success, is their first album. 23:31 LOL! Another very common reaction on first listen 28:17 Totally understandable how Epitaph threw you off - even rabid fans of this album choose the track as not really belonging on there. Me? I love it. Very strange experiment for Priest. 29:46 Yes! That's what initially fascinated me about Sad Wings. By the time I'd first heard the album, it was around the release of Unleashed In The East, and was intrigued how the original versions might sound. After getting used to the more restrained production, I was absolutely floored by the writing and performances. Sad Wings Of Destiny was my top pick of JP records for aeons, but it's not as easy to call favorites among those first 5-6 albums any more, personally. Great reactions! If I were to suggest another great, early Judas Priest album, I would go straight to Stained Class.

I appreciate songs like the Ripper for very different reasons then I do the album. When I really take my time to listen to my music I spin entire albums and I have to be in the mood for that album. This album is no exception, I will not always be up for the songs that make it great (the ones you appreciated the most). But the Ripper is a song I can listen to allways. It sits a bit strange inbetween the songs of side A but I think it stands really strong on it's own, whereas if I start with Victims of Change I just want to listen to the whole thing.

Wonderful album. One of the funniest reviews of Priest back in the day was one in a UK paper who sent someone from London up to Glasgow to review the band in the Apollo Theatre. At one point the reviewer wrote "if you ever wondered where drunken Scottish football fans go when there are no games then this is it"😂 I think the poor guy was terrified... as for Epitaph, I always heard early to mid 70s Queen rather than Beach Boys. Oh I also recommend following Rob "the metal god" Halford on social media. He is an absolute hoot. Lovely bloke with a fantastic sense of humour.

Priest are so overlooked. Youngsters lump them in with all the terrible more recent metal bands and assume that's all there is. They are SO much more than that. They experimented and evolved and changed musically throughout their career. They took risks. They successfully moved with the times in a way very few bands are able to do. Later on they became more derivative, but those early albums in particular are jewels. Oh, and they also were blessed with THE greatest rock vocalist & frontman of all time. Rob Halford.

Prog was at its peak in the early seventies, but as opposed to stuff like Yes or Jethro Tull, Priest kinda gravitated towards Queen. In his biography KK Downing mentioned his dislike of Epitaph as “just trying to show how clever we could be.” To my mind, the album is cohesive in its pattern of “soft and gentle to set the stage for the whirlwind.” Sometimes it’s all in one song (Victim of Changes) and sometimes it’s a long dreamy song into a cruncher (Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver). Epitaph is a tad broadway, but I’m sure Rob enjoyed getting to stretch out in it, I think if it was shorter it would be less jarring before the swing groove of Island of Domination.
