So sad she passed at 47. So much more life and music in her. She was used and abused by Hollywood powers that be and then blamed for her addiction problems when they created, supplied, prescribed. Administered, and required her to take uppers to go all day and not eat and downers to sleep....every day. Human beings get addicted to things that way, it's in our chemical makeup. Of course she needed those pills later in life to function...her body was used to them by that point. And the body stops performing expected functions after taking substances that cause things....sleep for example. You can't be on downers for years to sleep, then decide to stop and think your body is going to just go to sleep normally. The brain says "no, we don't sleep until I feel the effects of _____." Same thing for starting the day. Very sad indeed what she went through. So glad we have all these wonderful performances captured!

Judy sang her last bit of this song loud and strong and held w/o a breath forever! (And she was a chain smoker). We know about her singing. She was a first class actress (watch Judgement at Nuremberg or A Star Is Born), But even her dancing... When she is seen in a film and is dancing side by side with Gene Kelly, Fred Astair, Ray Bolger, Mickey Rooney, Debby Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, or ANYBODY and I noticed that I was never focused on any other dancer, just on Judy. She is so magnetic and so talented she naturally demands your attention!

Liza Minelli was both actor and singer. Most famous for the musical film Cabaret where she plays a singer in a decadent club in Berlin just before WW2. The songs "Cabaret" and "Money" (w Joel Grey) from the movie are iconic hits. (- Who is Judy Garland? - Its Liza Minelli's mam!)

An interesting point: it was quite an audacious choice for Judy to sing "Old Man River," a song that had originally been written for a black male character in the Broadway musical *Show Boat* (1927), and which had usually been sung only by male singers, often with operatic voices.
@DJ-pt4jt

This song was from the 1927 Broadway show, Show Boat, and sung by Julius Bledsoe. A critic from the New York Morning Telegraph described him as “a singer who can pick the heart right out of your body-if you don’t look out.” Judy Garland did it justice 😌

I love Judy, she never sang a song half-way, always gave it her all. I believe the song was written for the musical play Show Boat by Rodgers & Hammerstein. It told the story of slaves working along the Mississippi river (tote that barge, lift that bale) & was memorably sung by Paul Robeson if you want to hear a different take on the song. He was a black singer in the 1920s & 30s & made quite a splash with his deep voice. Check him out for yourself even if you don’t react to him. 👍👍😄

This is my favorite song sung live by Judy. So much power not only in her singing but also in her delivery. Probably the only other live performance that blows me away like this is when she sung "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" when President Kennedy was assassinated. Shows were cancelling right and left, thinking that would be best. But Judy insisted on going on. She said the country is in shock, and they needed something to get their minds off it for only a moment, and come together to celebrate his life and honor his presidency. kzitem.info/news/bejne/xYyh3n6tnYuddKg

Judy had the dramatic delivery, the impecabble timing, the mastery in building to a climax, the heart-tugging pathos, and the all-stops-out belt that flattens all in its path. Yeah, she had all that, as we alll know. But that voice. That golden voice had mysterious and delightful things going on in it; and it wrapped its arms around you and told you that she loved you, just by the sound of it. No one can learn that. No one else has ever had it.

Judy was a freak of nature (in a good way). By the time of this show, she had been a pill popping freak and chain smoker for thirty years. In addition, Sid Luft got her started heavily into alcohol about 12 years before this performance. With all of that she still knocked that over the stadium and all the way out of the park. They did not call her "leather lungs" for nothing I guess. I only wish her mother and Hollywood had been kinder to her. Mostly, I wish she had been kinder to herself. Who knows, we just passed her 100th birthday so maybe we are on the cusp of another phoenix rising with this kind of talent.

I feel this way the same about this song as I feel about Jeremy Jordon singing "She used to be mine". It's beautiful. Undeniable. But can you really infuse the music with the true intention and meaning of a song if you're not from the culture it came from? Judy has SO much emotion, and this is AWESOME, but she doesn't connect with what the song is about, she connects with the emotion in the song - admittedly she portrays the emotion better, and amazingly, if the FEELING is all you are about, But the portrayal of the intention and meaning is not quite there. Still amazing!
