The old Boys Are all leaving Leaving one by one Where young birds go flying Spread your wings and run But over the fields By the drystone walls An eagle will come no more Welcome Were the headlands St Valery behind No medals worth wasting On memories of sand But sweet is the breeze Over Raasay The morning awaits you there What kind Of heroes Here for us now Where leaders, stone preachers Minnows on flow But low hang the lights Over Viewfield And this night will day see no more The old Boys Are all leaving Leaving one by one Where young birds go flying Spread your wings and run But over the fields By the drystone walls An eagle will come no more

The concert was amazing last night. We visited from Switzerland (having been fans since the late 80s). What I really hope someone has is a recording of the audience during the fireworks. Everyone sang "Hearts of Olden Glory" to an empty stage for 20 minutes and wept out our thank you to a band whose music touched so many nations and people.

unha delicia escoitar isto, e que ben o público cando sabe facelo en silencio, algo cada vez máis difícil de atopar nos concertos ao aire libre

Geebsie have you got a full recording of Julie Fowlis singing "Fuaim A Bhlair" (Runrig Cover) on the same day as this on the 18th August ?

As pretty as the song is I don't think it best showcases what is so great about Fowlis. I think her narrative ability, her imagination and spontaneous playfulness and depth of artistic experience and musicianship comes out much more in the Gaelic songs, first of all because it is tied to the rythms and expressive diction of that language and musical heritage but also in the nature of the material, which allows for more than being just pretty songs sung sweetly. Songs like A Ghaoil, Leig Dhachaigh Gum Mhathair Mi showcases much more artistic gravitas. Tha Mo Ghaol Air Aird A'Chuain is still a "pretty song, sung sweetly" but there is more to the underlying yearning or for example An Ron/Ann an Caolas Ododrum which allows for some original explorations of both mythical storytelling and sound.

Well put - but don't you think any artist worth her salt would have a swag of tuneful options which include popular and traditional songs that may not highlight their vocal artistry. but will bring the house down. For me, Julie Fowlis never fails to deliver.

@@neurofire Of course. It's not about her delivery just about artistic choices. But you are right, choice of material is of course often very specifically contextual and hard to gauge at a distance.
