Jones Inlet on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. This inlet is always nasty, even on a good day. This summer it has been horrible. The channel is completely sanded over. Even on a calm day, long ocean swells create breakers across the bar that extend into the channel. The inlet needs to be dredged. The word is that will not happen until winter 2023. It looks like summer 2022 this is what we will have to bare and worse.
I am just passing the number 5 buoy heading south. I was aiming for just west of the main channel because that was where the clear passage was my last time out. However I kept veering to the east as I tried to find a hole in the breakers. I ended up just a little east of the main channel in the end. You can hear some of the commentary from other boaters coming through on channel 68 on my VHF.
High slack was 6:15AM. High tide was 4:30 AM. This was just before 8:00AM. So the current was going out and the tide level was a little past half way down.
Be careful in this inlet!
