How many kinds of roses do you grow?
At Agarato farm,
we grow three kinds.
Papa Meilland,
Crimson Glory and
Yves Piaget.
In this section
we grow Crimson Glory,
this red rose.
Have you tried many times before you select your roses?
In Japan,
about 100 types of new roses
are produced
every year.
In many productions,
We selected 80 types
of edible roses at first
and planted them in our farm.
We saw how they grew.
Then we selected 3 types
which should suit to our land.
We now grow about 3000 roses here.
As an edible rose farm,
we are one of the largest ones in Japan.
We appreciate all the support by everyone.
When you selected the roses,
you couldn’t select good ones soon after you planted them, could you?
That’s right.
We grew roses for the first one year
and saw how they grew.
Then we selected ones
which we believed to suit to our land.
We actually tasted them
to see their sweetness, texture
and aroma.
Then we decided these three types to grow.
We produce rose processed food
such as jam,
cordial syrup and so on,
and we sell them.
It’s soft.
Depending on the farming methods,
the roses have different taste
such as bitterness and hardness.
We, of course,
use neither pesticides nor chemical fertilizers.
We don’t use animal manure fertilizers, either.
We practice plant origin natural cultivation.
We had to prepare soil for roses at first,
because this farm had been left abandoned for 30 years.
To start the rose farm,
our owner rented this farm
and mowed the weeds
which were as tall as the height of a person.
The owner cultivated the farm
many times
for roses to grow well.
He built the bamboo green houses.
He really started the farm from scratch.
It took many years to prepare soil for roses.
Yes, it did.
I also ploughed up the farm
for half a year, or one year.
We kept spreading Bokashi Fertilizer,
fermented rice bran and chaff,
on the farm
many times.
We also removed stones and roots of weeds.
We repeated these tasks
over and over again.
What a tremendous effort!
When I look back on that time.
it was really hard job.
We have not only insects,
but also deer and boars
so many here.
That is why we built the green houses
like this.
Apparently
Our greenhouses are not built with PVC pipes or metal frames.
We wanted materials
to return to the soil.
Moreover, bamboos
intrude into mountains.
As a method to control bamboo spread,
We believed that we could make use of the bamboos
as agricultural materials.
So, we tried to build bamboo greenhouses.
When I heard about it,
I wondered how to deal with typhoons.
Well,
we tried to build them with different structures.
At first, due to typhoons,
as you know many typhoons heavily attack here,
our greenhouses were collapsed so many times.
Now we have
14 greenhouses here.
We actually built the greenhouses
twice as many as them.
Half of all greenhouses were collapsed.
Each time the greenhouse collapsed,
We changed the structure
and construction.
Through trial and error,
we finally made it.
We could make the structure fine enough
to withstand typhoons.
It this structure the best now?
Yes, it is.
This structure is the best now.
As the idea
Of circulating system,
you avoid animal manure fertilizers, don’t you?
You use cedar fertilizers, don’t you?
Yes, we do.
A sawmill nearby gives us
cedar bark
which is disposed of.
We use it for multiple purposes
to keep warm in winter,
to prevent weed from growing in summer
to control the humidity.
We spread the cedar bark on the ground.
What is it?
This is the mushroom bed fertilizer.
As a fertilizer,
waste mushroom beds
are given by a mushroom farm.
We also spread them on the ground
in winter, in the beginning of spring and before summer.
You adopt everything from mother nature.
These bamboos
just return to the soil, I thought.
But you return them to the soil
while you maintain and preserve the mountains.
That circulation system is super.
Bamboos gradually decay.
When we find cracks on the surface,
we make charcoal with cracked bamboos
and fertilize roses with it
We also make bamboo chips.
