Kamieniec Podolski, known as the "key to Podolia (the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth)", was besieged by Turkish troops on August 14, 1672. At that time, the fortress already had unmodernised fortifications and a weak crew of 200 soldiers of the permanent crew, a 500-man infantry regiment under the command of Major Kwasiborski from the enlistment of Andrzej Trzebicki, bishop of Krakow, two foot regiments (approx. 300-400 men) under the command of captain Wąsowicz and the captain Bukara, 24 dragoons, 70 men from the cavalry banners, 80 kijans of Captain Jan Mokrzycki and some Vlach cavalry by Jerzy Wołodyjowski. The total crew consisted of about 1,500 soldiers, of which 1,060 people were manned in the Old and New Castle, and the rest took up positions in the city. It was only 1/7 of the required fire crew.
