Dinner is the the main hot meal of the day. Lunch is a smaller meal before dinner. Tea is a smaller meal or a (potentially sizeable) buffet after dinner, or a scone and/or cake between lunch and dinner. Supper is something small late in the evening after you've already had dinner or tea. Simple.

Let's add some fuel to this northern lunch/dinner/tea fire. That northern "evening meal" can be early enough that there's a 4th round of food before bed. Drives me mental. "Want some toast and tea?" (looks at watch and it's 8-9pm. . .thinks - Toast, sounds good) and they come out with anything from 3 rounds of toast (with a topping) to a sandwich that could kill a dog.
