Ringing the temple bell, the kanshō, signals the beginning of a service. The traditional pattern is 7-5-3, with a crescendo that begins fast and slows down to a pause at the "peak" followed by a descrendo that begins slow and ends fast. The volume of the bell ringing also grows from soft to loud and back down again.
