Kanye actually said those words. That is mindblowing. I have no hate in my heart for him, but I'm truly sad that someone who is this ignorant about his own history is in a position of fame that allows him to misrepresent the rest of our people. To be clear, I do not care if a person is a democrat or republican, as I feel that there are significant issues with how bipartisan politics over-simplifies everything to either a left or right perspective that doesn't address complex situations where neither ideology provides an answer. My issue is how on earth any person can suggest that slavery was a choice, which is why it lasted so long. That shows even more than delusion, it shows actual contempt for his own people.
@mickeyknox8086

I honestly think he somewhat misspoke. Like Charlamagne said, he needs to think before he speaks cause that’s clearly not what he did here lol. Kanye really needs to check himself though, he’s only hurting his reputation at this point.

Look, unless our people was chained up the WHOLE TIME of slavery, when they woke up, when they went to sleep (if they was even able to get sleep) then yes, they had a choice. Stay slaves, kill massa and his homies, or kill urself n be with the ancestors. Its not a easy choice but its still a choice but I or anybody should blame our people for not doing the other 2 options cz i know my ass wouldnt have done it either. Why are we making excuses for him? Why are we formulating and recalculating what he meant to say? Why are we giving him a pass for such utter and complete recklessness. He said what he said and he meant what he said. He is absolutely entitled to his own opinion as we all are however with that comes backlash and full out Those of you that say his words mean nothing are sadly mistaken. His platform unfortunately is world wide, his voice is present to the masses whether we like to or not. It's tantamount to yelling FIRE in a crowded movie theater. The reaction is far more catastrophic than we can imagine. We live in a society were unfortunately we are judged by our appearance and the color of our skin. I see it on a daily basis especially in my career where black men and black women no matter how educated have to fight extra hard to get where they want to be. They have to be better, look better, do better, and be more assertive. Those of you that don't believe that reflect on where you are in your life. By no means am I saying that success is not achievable or attainable I can tell you this you will have to do more than your lighter skinned counterparts. When a man like Kanye West gets on the air and demean an entire race and says something like slavery is a choice I can't help but be offended, I can't help but be embarrassed and ashamed.

There were numerous slave revolts not just the Harriet Tubman and Nat Turner ones, but they were badly out armed and out manned and they were killed in battle. Self preservation is the first law of nature so why would they continue to fight a unwinnable battle? The reasons that slaves didn't choose certain death over living as a slave is much more complicated then people on here is aware of.
@williereese6026

cat rice rice sounds like you're making excuses. No one said that the choice was an easy one or a pleasant one...but it is a choice. Some people really do feel that slavery is worse than death.
@carrain34

Excuses? Are you aware of of the suicide preventable measures that the slave owners took to keep slaves alive? Things like force-feeding, not bring any guns aboard ships, putting Nets on the sides of the ship so they couldn't jump off punishing surviving family members because of a suicide, so death was the easiest way out but not everyone was able to even in their lives, and song Stay Alive because they was more concerned with their families life than their own and that makes them strong and heroes in my book... That's why I have much love and respect for my ancestors. It's easy to sit at a computer or phone and say what you would and wouldn't do but you don't know all of the circumstances they had to deal with back then and you should be thankful for the sacrifices they made for you to have a better life.

Kanye West is an entertainer. I represent myself, and he represents himself. I do however find it interesting that a supposed free thinker chose 2 out of the big 3 professions that African Americans have been allowed to break into to achieve the same modicum of wealth as what's been present since the early 1900's. Even before Blacks could eat with White people they could entertain them. Music, fashion, and sports industries are the three primary industries that as a freed people we segway into. Unfortunately, although not much is publicized, there are a vast number of career choices enlightened individuals can aspire to attain. I am an educator with a Master's degree, so I know there are many choices free thinking individuals can make. The music, clothing line, and his inflammatory rhetoric doesn't bother me as much as the people who defend him. They supposedly see his point of view as a shift in his mindset to a more conservative approach. We all know knowledge is power. Kanye would have to put his words to action as not to appear as ineffective as by his admission George Bush and Barack Obama had been. Kanye talks about cleaning up Chicago, so what has he done to help in this effort? What educational, vocational, and behavioral programs and policies will he discuss with the president, Ms. DeVos, and other qualified individuals to fix the systemic issues plaguing African American and other marginalized communities? At the end of the day, I personally feel as if this is a marketing ploy for the release of his new music. It is ironic that people seemingly can interpret what he meant by saying he "meant" mental bondage instead of physical bondage. Oh, by the way, same race to same race violence comparatively speaking are about pretty much the same. Please don't take my word for it, you can go to a .gov website to review the data. Again, I don't care who he endorses it's his choice, but I think many young people giving comments do not understand the pain their grandparents feel as individuals who were hosed and beaten for trying to exercise their rights in the 50's and 60's. People who still have physical and mental scars from a place and time that existed within our country. I believe its always important to reflect from the circumstances of the past as not to repeat them.

I love Charlamagne and Kanye. I really relate to their personalities and ability to be outspoken without worrying about being "people pleasers". I'm the same way. I completely agree with Charlemagne's breakdown of the situation. I know where Ye is coming from, unfortunately his delivery and expression doesn't always translate, then couple that with the media twisting things and only running with portions of conversations, taking things out of context, it only exaggerates the situation.

The word Boss come from the Dutch word Baas' which means master. In the Black's Law Dictionary, under "employee" we read, "Employee" is synonymous with "servant." The standard work on employer-employee law is Batt, The Law of Master and Servant (1929). pg 51. If you worked at any fast food industry or worked as a waitress, you asked the customes "How can I serve you today?" The word Serve comes from Latin word 'servire - "be a servant, be in service, be enslaved. Originally "be a slave," related to servus "slave," perhaps from Etruscan.

That's interesting and I respect and commend u for sharing it research. So one could say (*too many already do imo) if you're not a president, prime minister, a dictator, or Kings of Industry owning the majority of oil or other natural resources thus able to Leverage PPL who do run countries, and if you believe in God that makes the Kings and rulers slaves to him themself. I don't subscribe to that way of thinking and I'm not saying you did or insinuated such. you just did ppl a SERVICE & gave us some info ( *pun unintended lol but not in a condescending sarcastic way just , & I'm def not calling you a Slave no matter ur race it's a joke show how silly it is to have that mindset..... it's crazy we gotta explain this much or risk our work being interpreted in the work possible context smh) I believe that thinking like that you turn yourself into a slave mentally. That saying I think therefore I am is some real shit. If you think that you're a slave subconsciously you're going to find reasons to confirm your belief. Now if you believe in the law of attraction for the power of the Mind then you would believe or a thing that you will attract that. And right now Imo the media owned by the kings of Industry make sure to remind us daily of the times when white men owned us like animals ( power relatives a few Generations remove) and treated as such and they keep reminding us how our great grandparents didn't have as much if any as other humans in America in the sixties and they show us footage of Selma. I think that has just as much if not more of a psychological impact on then the fact that it happened. Blessings to all y'all when did we agree or not hopefully we can disagree in a civilized honorable way

Alex that is true to an extent. People do have a choice, however most people who work/are employed is because they have to be. If you live in this era and in this society and want a roof over your head and live a healthy life you need money. To earn money you have to work. It’s only a choice to a certain degree.

Abel M They were strong enough mentally, physically and spiritually to live and endure the terrorism. The ancestors sacrificed the quality of their life so all people of color can eventually live freely in America. I feel Kanye was wrong in not explaining the depth of the choice his ancestors had to make. Kanye can afford his free speech and realize his dreams because his ancestors was selfless enough to sacrifice their life for him to live and he should have expanded on exactly the type of choice they had, then maybe it wouldn’t have come off so bratty and ungrateful.
