This is typical Pliskova: she gets a big win and then does not back it up! But really, Kvitova was just amazing, especially 4:40 and 5:35. Wow! Congrats to Petra!

Petra is just incredible when she’s on top of her game. I think she’s the most dominant player after Serena when in form, after that probably Azarenka, Venus, Pliskova. (Then Maria? See below). Then the next tier you have Halep, Woz, Svitolina (the ‘backboards’ that always seem to be in form, but don’t dominate the way the power players can). Then up and comers like Ostapenko, Osaka, Keys, etc. I know I’m missing lots of players but that’s just a sample of how I see it breaking down. Note: Sharapova is a terrific power player with a fierce mentality, but she’s not in the above group athletically - though she makes up for it through hard work and willpower (I won’t mention her ‘supplements’, draw your own conclusions about that). One thing she has is that she never gives points or matches away...like the more-talented Muguruza and Sloane Stephens both do way too often (frustrating!). Simona Halep deserves her #1 ranking because tennis is about every match for an entire rolling 52 weeks. It rewards consistently very good players (Angie and Aga used to be in that category too). But there’s no question that when the power players are “on”, they can simply blow the defensive/counterpuncher type players off the court. This was a classic power matchup with two of the best in the game, both playing exceptionally well. Petra just has that otherworldly level that probably no one but Serena (and maybe Azarenka...if she ever gets back to being herself) can reach. Venus too, but rarely these days. Anyway, great match! Congrats on another 10-match win streak Petra!

@charliez077

well the question is which player right now WOULD truly deserve a #1 - in my opinion maybe none of them (tho I do love Simona). I would love there to be another dominant no. 1 as Williams, Graf, Hingis, Sharapova or Henin but right now there is none. Petra is maybe the biggest contender with her current form but obviously we have to wait for French Open and Wimbledon.

Well. All of this analyzing is very interesting, but tennis is all about results, all these “if”s, “when xx doing her best’ stuff just blows away when among all these names, only two have career slams and they are Serena and Maria. End of story.

Kvitová is reaching ‘unbeatable mode’ much more often than ever before. Something has been different about her this year. There’s more of a fire in her attitude than I’ve seen even during her previous best year on tour in 2011. I don’t know how possible this is but I’m wondering if she can finally reach the world number 1 ranking.

Entirely possible. Kvitova has very little points to defend between now and Wimbledon and could now rack up an impressive points tally. I think she is probably now favourite for Wimbledon.

t-ARTIS No beef I reckon. Czechs for the most part are fairly reserved people. That is what I observed when I visited there. Very professional hand shake in my opinion. Firm grasp of the hand and eye contact. These women are at the top tier of professional sport.

TheTora75 I noticed a frosty handshake as well. Usually when two country women play they hug or give a kiss at the end of their match, regardless of the outcome. This was a little unusual for two Czech women who have won so many fed cups together. A bit of sour grapes I reckon
