Continuing with my poorly shot, horribly narriated terribly edited video series, I present to you my newest abomin....creation....as a quick proof of life video.
I wasn't planning on doing a video on this, but it came out pretty sweet and this was inpromptu so you get some wonderful William Shatner-esq type pauses in my overview.
This is an N scale Kato Metra F40PH that had an ESU 58941 board fitted in it. Normally I only do front, rear and marker lights as a basic light package, then previously I've added ditch lights with a nano. However with the new 58941 'Kato Widebody' board, you have a few more outputs and options.
I clipped the upper light pipe and heat shrunk a scrap smled for the Aux2 output (as the upper housing mars light), added a 0402 smled for the beacon after slightly coring out the hole so it would fit flush underneath as Aux1. The light pipe for the headlight and ditch lights was clipped and another scrap full sized smled was wired up and heat shrunk for the forward headlight. The two ditch lights were each clipped and 0402 smleds were heat shrunk and the assemblies were then glued in place for the seperate ditch lights on Aux3 and Aux4. Finally another 0402 wired smled was glued to the marker lights for Aux 5.
By that point, it was getting a bit tight in the front end of the shell. :)
I added resistor banks for all of the SMLED's except for forward and rear lights as those already have dropping resistors built onto the board. the scrap kato SMLED used for the mars light reciveved a surface mount 570ohm resistor, all of the 0402 smled's recieved 4700 ohm resistors, then heat shrunk in and wired in. Speaker is 11x17 speaker with 3d printed housing.
ESU sound file S0530 for the F40 was loaded. lighting was all function mapped and a few other tweaks were made. I need to make a few more minor tweaks to sound level, but esentially this thing is done.
This type of work is pretty time consuming, so I don't see myself doing lots more of these in the future, although I have a couple of Operation North Pole sets I'll probably do up with this install and sell off.
I'll put a few shots over on by page on facebook since I can't upload stills here showing the install with the shell off.
Of course, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me or shoot me a message over on facebook.
