I've had ref3s for 15 years now, just running the off a decent 7.1 receiver. I have also used a Bryson amp. Either way, I haven't found a speaker I like better for less that $6k. I'll stick with them and maybe buy an old jeep.

Hi Terry, just curiou--As standard, the Reference 3s are equipped with ports that improve their low-end delivery. You can change them according to your preferences and the acoustics of the room. what do you recommend from a 10cm wall

Hi Terry, I'm curious what you're using for surrounds or if you have any plans to add ATMOS or height speakers? Nothing available in the reference line (would be way too expensive...), so I was wondering what your thoughts/plans are.

Hello, Could you kindly help here. Kef Reference 5 any good for Rock, Pop, Jazz and Reggae music? Will I need a subwoofer? How do you compare these to B&W 803 D3 speakers? Should I go for the reference 3? I plan on using Anthem STR per and power amplifiers. Thanks.
@PursuitPerfectSystem

The kef and bowers are very different you would have to choose between them. The 5 will put out more bass than the 3 and it sounds more refined and effortless because of the extra drivers but the 3 can still really deliver the goods when you get things right. I think the kef and the anthem would work really well actually Bowers aswell probably

Disclamer: Owned B&W all my life up to B&W 802D2, it's all gone, I have KEF ref 3 now and couldn't be happier. Different sound though. No brainer for classic music, go KEF.

Priyange Fernando thanks for your kind words. everything I said about the Arcam it0 was based on using it with my KEF Reference speakers 3 and 2c. It works very well but you can do better naturally. the 850 is just about enough imo more amplification is better

Thanks for this review, appreciate it. I did listen to the Reference 1's at dealer whilst trying out a couple of dacs around the £800 -1000 mark and now I'm not sure the dealer set them up correct. So thanks for the that piece of very useful information. One question: What is meant by dynamics ? I hear this all the time but have no idea what it means. Oh, thanks for the Madonna Vogue track... I will have to try that out
@PursuitPerfectSystem

Hi Jaspal, I am sure everyone might have their own opinion on it - more dynamics more lively bigger sound to things. The Reference Speakers in my room are very tight and focused but that is what I really like. There are a few things to think about when demoing the Reference Speakers and one of them is the ports that are being used the long or the short. The Long port really leans out the bass and I think ruins the sound of the speakers but others may want a lean sound. The Reference 3 and I guess the Reference 5 have 2 ports and you can mix and match with both long and short in them. I still think you want short in both to get as much bass from the speakers as you can and then manage wuth bass within Dirac or similar. Thanks for your continued support btw, I really appreciate it
@PursuitPerfectSystem

Thats probably right to a large degree - the swings from quiet to loud and how big they are, not so much how the speaker copes more how much of a difference it throws out - I think the general size of the scale of the sound presentation has a lot to do with perceived dynamics.

Hi Terry, I'm about the take the plunge. How hard are these things for one person to move around? They're quite heavy, but is the weight well distributed? Thank you for the reviews.

These are very heavy I can pick them up with a bear hug technique on my own but they are heavy. Recently I bought a removald skate I am not sure the technical name it was £25 on amazon a bit of wood with wheels on it to help me move them in and out for reviews but if your only moving them once its doable as a 1 man but if you can get a second set of hands it will help you immensely :)

How would you compare the Reference 3 to the Monitor Audio PL200II? I currently own the PL100II but am thinking of moving to a floor stander.
@PursuitPerfectSystem
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew I had PL100 Mk1 speakers before the KEF Reference and really liked them. The natural upgrade was to go for Mk2 editions and I liked them as well. The KEF won me over after 2 poor demos actually when I had a home demo in a room with good acoustics it was their imaging that won me over - I still think they image fantastically well by that I mean create semi 3D things in front of you and around you that are tangible and believable. If you listen to Madonna Vogue in my room it blows your mind in this regard - however they are not perfect and require a serious system to get that sound out of them.

Thanks for the feedback very useful. I am kind of conflicted because I can currently afford the KEF Reference 3 with trade in at Nintronics but don't have a huge amount of space. However, I am planning on buying my own place this year but once I have done that I won't be able to afford an upgrade anymore. I would have to use my current space for probably another 6 months. What do you think of having the Reference 3 in this space imgur.com/a/qK5XrBx I figure it would work okay as they have such huge dispersions.

@@rowethren4678 that's a tough one for me to know as your sitting very near field there. I would make it work because that is what I am really good at because I have always had to do that - I have always had hard conditions to work in. They do put out a lot of bass which you can roll off using the longer ports but that robs them of a lot of what makes them why I like them but each case is a little different obviously. The plats put out a lot of bass too. I have reviewed the PL100 mk2
@rowethren4678

I actually use a Minidsp DDRC-22D for room correction and that really sorted out the bass and gives me pretty solid EQ capabilities, although I have the curve set to pretty much follow the original measured response. The interesting thing is I can put my ears almost in line with my speakers and it doesn't effect the sound stage much, it is definitely better when I am sitting back in my chair but it doesn't make as much difference as some people would lead you to believe.

For my Ref 3 I have found the more power and quality you feed them with the more control they have and the larger scale of sound you get. The REF 1 will give you big scale sound from a bookshelf. Maybe test drive some amps with the speakers comparing highest power for the budget with a few others and see. Are you in the UK I can suggest someone good to speak to?
