Headgear protects from facial cuts but it also increases likelihood of concussion.. Headgear is believed to have contributed to brain injury from cumulative punches. You still receive the transfer of energy from the punch.

Quarry was a very good boxer. He beat Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers. Koed Earnie in one round. He beat a lot of top heavyweights back then including Floyd Paterson after Floyd had lost his championship. It is just that Ali, Frazier, and Foreman are all in the group of top ten best heavyweights of all time, IMO. Jerry was well past it when Norton beat him. And Ken was an exceptionally good boxer. In the tournament to determine the heavyweight champ after Ali refused to be drafted, Quarry made it to the finals beating top heavyweights, and then lost a close, majority decision to Jimmy Ellis. Majority decision = 1 judge ruled it a draw)> Very close bout. Ellis was recognized as the world champ, and Joe Frazier did not enter the tournament. Then Frazier beat both Jimmy Ellis and Muhammad Ali after Ali came back. Joe Frazier became the one and only real heavyweight world champion. Yet, people under rate Quarry, often. In fact, George Foreman said that Jerry Quarry is the best heavyweight in George's era that never became a world champion. Yes, Jerry Quarry became "punch drunk" after his career ended. Boxing is a very tough sport. As far as head injuries and very serious injuries, boxing is even more dangerous than the UFC. The protection of 8 oz gloves, actually makes thr sport more dangerous, because the hands dont get hurt easily and you can pound away at will on your opponent, typically for the duration of the bout. More brain damage occurs in boxing, than in UFC. And it doesn't matter how stupid you are, how much money you get and how sane you are to be able to stand in there and fight - even when taking big punches. Jerry Quarry was very tough.

@Deano4322 Yes I noticed that. Someone on here posted that Quarry was pretty much retired and drinking heavily when offered this fight and only had two weeks to train. So looks like he could of been set up as a stepping stone for Norton. Do disrespect to Norton intended.

Beautiful the way JQ slipped that right hand at 1:20. I was an am boxer and had basic skills. That was many years ago, but I could still make the average guy look silly. But one thing I and very few ams ever developed is that amazing ability to slip punches like that. That's where the pros leave me in awe. I've seen ams with amazing power, but never seen one with top-ranked pro ability to just barely slip a punch.

Ken Norton tore Jerry up in this fight.Quarry was at a distinct disadvantage with short reach. Jerry's first round was his best when he left hooked to Norton's body, and he landed 2 dynamite left hooks to Norton's face. But as soon as Jerry got cut by Norton's big right roundhouses is was only a matter of time before he lost the fight. Especially the third round when Norton pounded rights to Jerry's head. Jerry still landed some very good counter punches. If Jerry wasn't cut so bad in this fight, he possibly had a chance at winning but he took way too many punches.

Quarry is hanging in there" says the announcer in round 4. Which pretty much explains Quarry's whole career. Even as kid, and not knowing enough, it felt dirty watching the punishment he repeatedly took. Heart of a lion to be sure. None tougher. RIP

So many thoughts when watching this fight; # 1 - an amazing fight #2 - how could I have not seen this before? The whole fight is Foreman/Lyle or round 9 Ward/Gatti 1. Just phenomenal action. #3. As overwhelmed by the bravery of the fighters, could not escape thinking about Jerry Quarry post career, a vegetable and the moral conflict that is boxing.

Jerry Quarry always gave his all in the ring. In another era he might have been champ. Cuts were always his downfall. If not for the cut he might possibly have won this fight. Quarry had all the heart in the world and would never stop trying, but he was a little too small for most top Heavyweights. Never more than a cruiser weight and could have trimmed down to a light heavy i think. However his brother Mike was already in that weight division. Regardless, he did beat some pretty good heavy's during his time and i loved watching his never take a backward step style. I am a big boxing fan who also loved to box and Jerry will always be a favorite and tough one. Such a warrior! Thanks for the video. Subscribing now.
