@@markdp1983 a few years ago I saw the Vietnam war movie "The Odd Angry Shot", starring Graham Kennedy as an Australian SAS trooper. He actually managed to pull it off quite well, and when I found our about him later I was very surprised to find that he was the Australian version of Terry Wogan. One newspaper headline was "GraGra's going to War, But he Won't be Shooting Blankety Blanks". He also played a reporter in "The Killing Fields". As good as Wogan was, I couldn't imagine him playing a straight role like that, which just shows how versatile Kennedy was.

The reason Americans "won't get it" is because US game shows didn't have the same limitations on prizes that the UK did at the time. The FCC didn't crack down on prize values the way Britain's Independant Broadcasting Authority did back then. The limits were even stricter on BBC because the brass over there felt it inappropriate to spend taxpayer money on that kind of thing. By the time the IBA limits were lifted, brits were watching the Lily Savage revival version. It's not because Americans are somehow denser, this is wholly local humor, where the context means damn near everything.

I think you are right but I also think that, speaking about Kenny Everett in particular here, many American people would never have 'gotten it' (no offence intended to any US person). This is a very 'British' kind of humour and it has always allowed for a certain kind of 'naughty' behaviour that would not be tolerated on American TV, especially going back 30 or 40 years ago. Do you honestly think that Kenny Everett or the 'Carry On' movies or Benny Hill to mention but a few would have been a hit among many Americans. Not on your life. There would be a riot. Kenny would have loved that! Hope that those from the show who have passed on are sleeping tight.
