This video shows that Kestrels take to the sky as everything else runs for it.
We are back in the Lancashire/West Yorkshire borderlands in the South Pennines on another warm and sunny summer evening.
Possibly around 200 metres away, we’ve spotted two Kestrels on a telegraph pole.
The farmer is using a tanker to spray slurry on to the fields - the rabbits that live on the ground know what is coming so they scatter from the noise…
The Kestrels eventually fly down from the pole to seek prey from a lower level.
The Kestrel family are now hunting from the walls and fence posts.
They patiently wait for a noise or a movement from any small mammal such as a vole.
They are not catching much, so maybe the presence of the sheep deters the voles from coming out
Eventually the Kestrel seeks better opportunities elsewhere.
These past few evenings we’ve regularly seen Little Owls but not Kestrels; but tonight it has definitely been Kestrels but no Little Owls.
It would be interesting to know whether the Kestrels displace the Little Owls.
