Low carb is working for me and I'm going to stick with this way of eating. Some people try to find reasons not to cut out foods that they like or are addicted to. When I told my daughter that I was eating low carb, the first thing she said was oh I couldn't live without bread. I didn't think that I could either but I have done so for 18 months now and even thought I enjoyed bread, I don't miss it. Chaffles and mug bread fill this gap when I need "transport" for other food.

When I walked in the supermarket (in the Netherlands ) in the bread department they bake them fresh and I used to go home with so much bread, it was ridiculous. I was eating so much bread at that time. And now when I do my shopping I just walk pass the bread trying to entice me. It doesn’t appeal to me anymore. Because, you are so right about belief systems, and KZitem provides a great forum for anyone that wants to stand on a soapbox and extoll the virtues of their beliefs. You are also correct in saying that science should not be about belief systems; science is about verifiable data and provable facts, However, the words science, research, and studies get bandied around so much in order to give some credibility to somebody's beliefs. Many have pointed to studies that are based on questionnaires as bad. If you're asked how much meat you ate in the past week, how many people can accurately remember? And how many weigh the food they eat? Apparently most papers that support a "plant-based" diet are based on questionnaires.

Here's the bottom line "FOR ME" I'm male 6'2" and 67 years old. When I retired, I was 298 pounds. Started swimming 1 hour per day - every day. Counted my calories in vs out. Watched what I was eating and started eating healthier. I lost 30 Lbs but could not shed the weight around my mid section. Started doing some research and discovered "insulin resistance". That was a game changer! Started following a low carb diet and quasi keto and started seeing results. Stopped most processed foods and especially refined sugar. I used to be a sugar addict. Maintaining low carbs was difficult at first. Now its easy. I skip breakfast and eat within a 6 hour window, 2 meals / day I progressed slowly into a full keto diet and now include 48 hour fasting on a weekly basis. I dropped another 50 Lbs within 6 months. The best result was a significant reduction in my arthritis! Last check up at my doctor and he told me my blood work was excellent and whatever I was doing, keep doing it! I am on my way to a target weight of dropping below 200 Lbs. I feel amazing, my energy level is far better my cognitive skills have improved and my previous sunny disposition on life is returning. So if Keto is considered risky, I will take it and live a more fulfilling life by the lifestyle changes it has given me. Just my story and more evidence of what it can do. Plus, I prefer the foods on Keto rather than eating like a grazing cow in the field.

I would never have imagined! So after a few months--cholesterol down from 265 to 200, A1C down from 5.6 to 5.2, LDL way down to 100, triglycerides 43, HDL 86 (always was 100 before). Most interesting was GFR was optimal range, where I kept being accused of having CKD. If those folks can do better, I challenge them. Agree, it's sort of scary with dogmatic "push" for plant based foods claiming they have unique nutrition. Even government agencies claim spinach being a good source of iron and kalcium despite scientists have found over 70 years ago that since the oxalic acid binds to calcium the human body rejects the calcium from not only the spinach but also the calcium of the cheese you perhaps eat with it, it get stuck in kidneys or around the joints. When Campbells soup fed mice spinach they got brittle and soft bones and deformed skeletons.

Thank you for taking these guys on. Both are type 1 diabetics so they are stuck needing insulin. The first interview I saw with them was on plant based " Plantchompers" and I went nuts listening to them. My biggest complaint with them is that they use the Randle Cycle in reverse logic to explain that a large glucose drink after low carb fat adaptation will cause a sugar spike, PROVING that you haven't put T2D in remission! They can say that from their plant based pulpit and it sounds like science to uninformed listeners. But, its not insulin "asking the cells if they would like to have some glucose, it insulin desperately trying to get the elevated glucose OUT OF THE BLOOD STREAM BECAUSE ITS TOXIC!!!!
@martinepeters9891
Жыл бұрын
When you drink water, your body tries to get rid of it by peeing because it's toxic. Too much O2 is toxic, too much CO2 is too. Your analogy is not water tight. A healthy body is using insuline to bring the glucose into the cell to use it for fuel. Not because it is toxic within itself. You constantly have glucose in your blood, even after a whole week of water fasting your blood has glucose in it. Without any glucose you'd be dead. Don't take words out of their context. Lol. The reason for this temporary less tolerance for sugar is because your body is adaptive by nature. So when you didn't put sugar in your body, your body needs less insulin. It doesn't keep insulin high when there is need for less. Same as when I eat low fat. Over time the body doesn't secret as much bile. This doesn't mean we are not supposed to eat fat, it just means that we don't make as much of what we don't use. This temporary glucose intolerance is only temporary and by all means doesn't say that eating low carb makes us insulin resistant. It just means; temporary less tolerant. We adapt to all things: even drugs and alcohol we need more of over time to trigger the same response. And when I have not been drinking for a year and then try to drink a whole bottle, that's not going to end well. I hope this helps.
@martinepeters9891
Жыл бұрын
And insulin is not a direct transporter of glucose into the cell. In that case it would indeed be the insulin begging the cell to take in the sugar. Lol. The two hormones insulin and glucagon are their opposite and the insulin converts the glucose into glycogen. Then when the cell needs the actual energy the glucagon will transfer the glycogen back into glucose. Glycogen can be stored in muscle and liver for later use, or can be 'converted' into lipids.
@AI-vs7sm

Thank you. I think we are both on the same side here, low carb high fat, so I'm not sure why you are correcting me. I guess I would repeat your own advice back to you. Don't take words out of context! My term was ELEVATED GLUCOSE in the blood stream. Yes, liver maintains glucose levels at one teadspoonful, 5grams, but, excess glucose is going to be converted into fat to be stored. Right? Most LCHF sites describe excess glucose as toxic!
@martinepeters9891

@AI21 yes, I'm absolutely on the LCHF band wagon and yes, I'm also taking into consideration that billions of people have been living on grains and fruits, and potatoes and milk and meat and fish for thousands of years. All the way back into before the Bible and the Bagdavad Gita. Some make it out as if you drop dead in the street if you touch a banana while all the real problems (in the Netherlands) didn't start until the introduction of the McDonald's into Europe, the coca cola, the potato chips and bags of candy instead of ONE small piece of candy the size of one teaspoon. We are a nation of apple's, milk and potatoes and have lived just fine. However, I'm the first generation 'junkfood' and the first 'chubby' child in school (which would be considered lean today). I was the first child in school with divorced parents in 1980, and was underfed due to neglect and discovered a comfort in stealing cookies. So, I'm a perfect fit for LCHF to curb my hunger pangs which are traumatic triggers.

Hey Dr. Westman, your information is awesome, thanks! Maybe YOU will provide the answer that no other nutrition experts will step up and answer, is nutritional ketosis a good idea for someone with CAD, high calcium score, yet still asymptomatic? I’m sure hoping that I can implement this program and take the 7day course.

The (2) Vegan influencers are Type 1 not Type 2 diabetics. The grouping of these two different medical conditions as being the same is common medically and in the minds of people. They were interviewed and their lack of understanding was clear. I think managed diabetes is less than 140 / 6.5 A1C based on medical standards of care. Actual normal blood sugar is only 80 and an A1C of 4.4. They have managed to lower their average blood glucose into the A1C of 6 range. But when compared to Dr. Bernstein’s Type 1 patients see below 4.7 they went silent. They just could not explain it away. Plus they only used a fraction of the insulin these two take. They are young and active so this is the best they will see. The concept of a T2D being of insulin they cannot fathom. Most medically trained professionals are likewise not correct on Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. GREAT VIDEO !!!

The normal healthy range for blood glucose is actually 80 mg/dl to 100 mg/dl for fasting glucose (though being in the 70 range is fine, and the medical community prefera under 100), while 120 mg/dl or under is within normal range after meals. Normal A1C range is generally considered to be 4.0 to 5.6. 5.7 to 6.5 is prediabetic, and over 6.5 is diabetic. I'm a type 2 with an A1C average of 5.0 to 5.4 without meds.

One of the carnivore doctors pointed out that most people with colostomy bags quickly learn that with a meat diet nearly everything is absorbed and they don't need to change them as much. But with a high carb and fibre diet they have to change the bags all the time and have gas, leakage and explosion issues.

So again insisting on seeing the science from the guy in video instead of presenting the science himself. Why not shut it down that way? The keto big wigs are well aware that keto raises LDL in adherents & often freely announce it as a problem. This info is for the general public that is not a critical audience, & that is why the doc speaks this way. THe good Dr. Would never present this to a peer group. He would never get away with it. Why disrespect us in this way? Because it is a mere sales pitch. ...put out by his company that profits from your by-in. (Judging from the comments here, it works like a charm.)

@@KarenTweedy-vd6fb dk what that means. the science (see chris gardner study) shows keto no better for weight loss than any other diet, & keto speakers generally agree ldl increases. they (keto biased)have theories about particles & the implications of fluffy vs dense, but medical community doesnt seem to agree. why pander keto to the public as drug companies do in usa to folks who don't have the training to make informed decisions? it's obviously profitable...even for the layman on KZitem.

I got scared off atkins 20 years ago, recently pre diabetic/metabolic syndrome(all 5 indicators)!, and cardiac stents twice….I called a diabetic nurse (lm a retired cardiac RN- go figger!)……she told me one piece of fruit per day ! WHAT ! I ate fruit all day long….what a dive into the research- I was WRONG - wrong for 15 years of nursing. But trying to get others to even consider keto is LIKE TALKING TREASON ! Both my sisters are also retired RNs, one is now celiac, the other is on statins- and they just ‘pleasantly tolerate me’……how can we trigger change when even my closest relatives- nod and ignore the research?

You are to kind to these dribblers doctor, especially when you speak of your concern for the earth. I assure you pandering to these sharks will not put you on their good side. The science shows that long after we all die from the affects of high Carb diets the earth, our Mother will live on just fine. So when you talk about your concern for earth the reality is it's the concern for man and his existence. So in the end we seem to want to let Mother kill us with her Carbs and move on to the next inhabitant of her planet. I say worry about eating foods that were here long before we were. That which includes none of the plant based diets. In the US most of the vegetables and fruit we now call staples were in fact, nonexistent in the US a thousand years ago. So how did we survive back when there were no native fruits and vegetables, Meat is the answer and that is science at work. By the way I love your work.

When I reduced my carbohydrates after 2 months, my blood sugars stabilised 4.5>5.1 mmols, also my blood pressure reduced, and I am losing weight, and my skin problems are clearing up.

Thank you Dr. Westman! I did keto for five years and now I'm what they must refer to as "ketovore". Mostly meat, eggs, butter. I do have cabbage, avocado or a couple Claussen pickles slices or green olives a few times a week. My arthritis/hips/lower back are almost perfect. However, once in a blue moon, I decided to have a sandwich with sourdough bread. The results of that are weak hips, pain and shaky legs. I find that odd, but it's what was happening. It took me a while to figure out it must be the bread. As far as the keto/carnivore way of eating shortening my life span, I'd rather have that than pain and misery eating the typical American diet. Comfort is more important to me than my demise! lol All my best your way.

@@robblankenstein6825 yeah, that's the "first response" that's suppose to go away (Dr. Bikman says so). But even that makes little sense to me. Low-carb doesn't put your pancreas to sleep. I haven't tried it myself in any experiment with a CGM, though.
