Is pesticide-free agriculture headed for an impasse? At a time when Europe is debating the re-authorisation of glyphosate and seems to be scaling back on its ambitions for nature restoration, I thought it was about time for a progress report on the current state of scientific research on the topic: Where do we stand with regards to alternatives for chemical pesticides? Is the goal of halving pesticide use by 2030 still achievable?
To put my questions to the eminent experts in the field, I took advantage of a major gathering of crop protection researchers from across Europe in Uppsala, Sweden, at the end of May this year. Organised by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), the event was designed to highlight “recent achievements, future solutions and ways forward” in crop protection with the use of little to no chemical pesticides. Over the course of three days, participants took stock of what research into this very foundation of our food system has to offer to make European agriculture more robust, resource-efficient and environmentally friendly. Needless to say, SLU is a member of the European Research Alliance “Towards a Chemical Pesticide-Free Agriculture”.

Sweden is the eighth stop on my “Field Trip”, my study tour of agricultural research across Europe.
The European Research Alliance “Towards a Chemical Pesticide-Free Agriculture” was launched by INRAE, together with its German partners from JKI and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF). Under ERA’s umbrella, 35 research organisations from 20 European countries are currently working closely together with a view to pooling their strengths and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise in their respective fields. One of the alliance’s key objectives is to provide scientific support for an ambitious target set by the European Commission: cutting Europe’s use of pesticides in half by 2030.

The impact of my travels:
I’m always aiming to limit my carbon footprint. For this video, the impact created by my train travels (source: Ademe/monimpacttransport.fr) was 6.1 kg CO2e for an itinerary of 2,389 km, which is 472.9 kg CO2e less than if I’d chosen to travel by car and 391.9 kg CO2e less than if I’d gone by plane.
