I'm so glad youre reviewing the K8. TKLs are already a hard form factor to find in the budget custom keyboard category so having someone like Keychron approach it is nice. Keychron K8 is what really got me into the keyboard hobby. It was affordable, wireless, multi-OS, looked nice, and worked great out of the box. What I *really* loved was how easily I could improve the experience with hot-swapping different switches, removing them to lube, adding case dampening material, better keycaps...the K8 is cheap, versatile, and easy to mod. I couldn’t ask for a better gateway drug.

When this video came out, I had parts on order for a keyboard almost exactly like this (K8, Aqua Kings), and was blown away by the idea of the silicone dampener. Ordered some silicone instead of the neoprene foam I originally intended to use, and damn man, it's a game changer; so easy, so effective. The effect it has on tightening up the sonic properties of the board cannot be understated, although I did go an extra step to fashion a makeshift plate foam with sorbothane. Along with Aqua Kings not needing to be relubed or filmed and the hotswap sockets, it felt like cheating modding this board to bring it up to spec.

Got the k8 a few weeks ago with gat browns. It's my first hot swap board and I swapped in lubed and filmed gat yellows to try a linear switch, modded the stabs, got some drop skylight caps, and added sorbothane. While I liked the sound of the yellows I found myself mistyping too often. I bit the bullet and got drop panda switches which I just finished lubing and putting in last night. Really liking the feel but not so much the sound. I think im a tactile guy. Im trying to control myself because I can see me spending a lot of money into this hobby.

@xplinux22
3 жыл бұрын
There would probably be Bluetooth connectivity issues with an all-aluminum case, though. Perhaps they could potentially cut out a window in the bottom of the aluminum case and install a plastic plate for the BLE chip to communicate through. Or otherwise, they could try what some other premium mechanical keyboard brands have done and install the BLE chip right below the spacebar, which (assuming PBT/ABS keycaps) should allow for full signal strength connectivity.

For those wondering, I think Keychrons are plastic by design and only have alu on the sides is in part to retain its Bluetooth capabilities. One reviewer of the IQUNIX F96 (it's like a full alu K4) noted that its Bluetooth module is an external block basically glued outside the bottom case because the Bluetooth signals wouldn't be able to pass through a full alu body. Although of course cost plays a big factor into its design. They can basically use the same side alu panels for multiple units of their wireless models since they will all have the same length (K6 and K12 - same; K2 and K4 - same) and cut-outs (all wireless units have the usb-c and toggles on the left side). If I'm not mistaken they can even recycle the top and bottom alu panels for K2-K6-K12 and K4-K8.

I own a K6: Durock stabs, band aid mod, Gateron CAP Milk Yellow switches and a keycap kit taken from KPRepublic. I filled the board with packing foam in order to get the sound I like and it plays like a dream! A good but not so expensive set of keycaps for this board would be the PBT/Dy-Sub set made by HKGaming (39 pounds here in UK), it has the right keycaps for filling the board and it also has enough modifiers which let you maintain the original layout of the board! I basically got my board done for: - K6 89$ - Gateron CAP Milk Yellow 35$ - Durock stabs 9$ - Foam (used the one at the bottom of the box) 0$ - Keycaps (Doubleshot, 1.3mm PBT, Cherry Profile) 72$ Total 205$ If you like one of the HK Gaming sets you can bring it down to 172$, which is not bad for a wireless mechanical which is compatible with computer, tablets and smartphones alike!

While those legends do look nice now, I'm not convinced that would last. The cap itself is made of ABS which is all fine and good - but it's a single piece of clear plastic - the gray / orange coloring is *paint* on top of the ABS; it's either been screened-on, or laser-ablated off to make the legends. That lets them be nice and thin and crisp - but it's likely also the culprit for the weird chalky feeling, and more importantly, wont't last like doubleshot or dyesub caps will. AQUA KING HYPE! I ordered mine like a month ago... I think they're stuck in the Suez Canal... Alright, man - you're like the third or fourth among my favorite youtubers to hop on Nebula...
