The old German saying "it stinks like an Iltis" came immediatly to my mind, when i spotted the brand new VW Iltis kit by ACE in the online shop of an Ukrainian model kit retailer. ACE isn´t really known for their high quality and precision, but this kit is the first one in 1/35 scale of this brand, so finally my curiosity prevailed and i ordered the model.
To my big surprise this kit has barely anything in common with the rather questionable quality of the 1/72nd scale kits by ACE. The parts are made to a very high standard, have no blemishes and are even nicely detailed. There aren´t even any ejection pin marks visible on the parts. This makes us stop for a moment and wonder! How good the parts fit together in the end is of course an entirely different question, that remains to be seen. At least the "raw material" seems to be up-to-date.
A big negative point are the instructions, they are some kind of crazy horror show. The layout is rather chaotic and just by briefly browsing through them i spotted a couple of obvious mistakes, so i assume, that there are even more mistakes hidden in there, which might have fatal consequences. I would not trust the instructions too much.
All in all it is a neat model kit for the advanced modeller and will find a good number of fans out there. The Iltis will look nice next to a Leopard 1 or Leopard 2 tank on a small diorama, maybe some modellers can even recreate a funny situation from their own service time? I am already looking forward to seeing what the scale modelling community will do with this kit.
The kit costs between 25 and 38€ in Germany, which is a big price range. In my opinion one should not spend more than 25€ for it.
