Klaus was among the first to die in the AIDS crisis. As a singer I admired his range and presentation. I saw him in person many years ago and remember him today. Make Friends!

Very jealous you got to see him in person. I'm going back through his videos, his 79th birthday would have been a couple days ago! I'm like you, as a singer his range is amazing. When I discovered him in college I loved to practice to Klaus songs cause I have the falsetto, but nowhere near that tone. Love his commitment to the performance and his otherworldly vibe.

They had no chance...nobody saw it coming. As Paul Gambacchini once said, talking about Freddie Mercury: "The damage was done before anybody knew it could be done." Even Klaus learned about the disease from TV, not earlier than when he had yet checked into hospital for what should be his final stint, there. What he may have known before is that he wasn´t terribly well, but nobody had the glimpse of an idea what that thing was, at the time. He probably caught it in the mid 70s...when not even the typical cluster of symptoms had appeared on the medical radar and everybody was acting careless AF, because the most horrific thing you were going to bring home from a night at the dark room was a tripper or crab louse.

I love the contrast between Klaus and the band. They're all dressed in typical late 70s/early 80s style with no real costume, and Klaus is a goddamn space alien. They're professionally focusing on their instruments and Klaus is flying up and down through octaves like it ain't no thang. Such a damn shame he couldn't stay longer.

I met Klaus Nomi at a performance he was doing, I was working Security with several other people, He came over to us and spent about ten minutes meeting us and talking. I found it amazing he was so approachable and friendly. After the show, he came back and we chatted more, we were all surprised he remembered our names. I felt he was such a warm and genuine person for the short time I actually got to speak to him. I was sad when I learned of his passing.

@@EphemeralProductions This happened a week before he and Joey were on Saturday Night Live. I had met Joey at Fiorucci earlier in the week, he introduced me to Klaus. We partied a bit at the Mudd Club and other dives that week. Klaus and I had planned to get together my last night in NYC, we were to meet at a location on Christopher Street but he never showed. I was disappointed to say the least but I didn't call him or anything, I just let it go. I never saw or spoke with him again. I have had a couple of dinners with Joey when he was working in Vegas. It was an unexpected and super fun week hanging with them. We would walk the streets with Klaus, sometimes he burst out singing Lightning Strikes or The Witch is Dead. Loudly echoing against the buildings. Very sweet down-to-earth guy. One wouldn't think it by looking. ; )

@@PH-ye5fj yeah he does seem like he was a cool and sweet guy. @@princealigorna7468 really? Sounds like it's about something actually dangerous, like global warming... Cold War had victims, but Soviet Union was utterly defeated and we freed with only a few dozen heroes killed by russians in the process. Current war is much worse BECAUSE russia wasn't destroyed in the Cold War, unfortunately.

@@KasumiRINA In the 80s, us Yanks didn't know the USSR was in decline. This was Reagan's "evil empire" era. This was the Day After Tomorrow era. I remember seeing him on german tv in 1982. Being 16 years old then I found it really good. Unfortunately Germany wasn't ready for him back then. At least he started smelling his success before he had to go. Thanks for that. Klaus was decades ahead.

It's good to be able to judge the musical heroes of my youth now that I'm close to 50. Klaus Nomi has become a bigger heroe ever since.

I remember going to see this in 1982 at the NARO in Norfolk Virginia and having a Beck's Bier and splitting a joint with my friends. I was metalhead guy and really against other musics. He was really talent, free person, he loved his music. He style was very nice ! Very nice voice ! He lived as a free man, he realized his dream. The worst thing is one, he died alone and with pain. He doesn't deserve it. Rest in peace my brother. We are very lucky because of you, you gave us something different and one so nice mixed of music. Thank you. I hope you singing in heaven!

When he died I was 11. I read a news in the newspaper: "the new disease that affects gays killed the singer Klaus Nomi". They said it was "The new tremendous gay's desease" I didn't even know who the singer was, but the news shoked me, I had pity for him and for all the gay people... Soon, I lerned that the desease kills no matter the sexual orientation you had. So, like all the world, I learned how to fear about AIDS. But my fear, since then, has always been related to the memory of poor Klaus Nomi. And today, for the fisrt time, I am listening the poor guy singing, and I find him weird, interesting, and really nice. Hope you are having a good trip, Klaus. 💜

I knew Nomi's music, but never saw much footage of him performing. This song reflects the anguish that all of the youth felt when the natural end of the Cold War was sent into a tailspin by "Ronny RayGun". We all thought we were toast.
