John, you and your brother must go to sleep every night with a great sense of satisfaction. Job well done. You guys are awesome!

14:10 "Dropped it!" Reminded me of a job I was doing several years ago in my basement shop. After machining slightly oversize, I was basically polishing a steel shaft to exactly fit a pair of needle bearings for the pivot on the nosegear of my experimental airplane. I had the assembly (two bearings and shaft) in my oily hands, fumbled it, and it landed in a dirty cat litter box. The joys of basement shop machining. The litter box isn't in my shop, now. I have a nice Bausch & Lomb 10X loupe that I used to insect tooling, but I bought a bunch of LED lighted 30X pocket magnifiers on Amazon and they're great! Lots of edge distortion as expected, but it's essentially a pocket miagnifier, and they were a bit over $3 each delivered from China! How do they do that?

Yeah I love my little loupes, I've got 2 of them and I use them several times a day. But I won't let Erik use them otherwise his polishing time will quadruple.

On this particular part it probably doesn't matter, but on parts with a longer stickout, turn first and drill last. Prevents part deflection (taper and chatter) under load since there's more material to resist the cut :) I also wonder if your digital probe in the mill might be able to act as a crude tool setter in the lathe. Not sure with the round tip...hmmmm.

Hi mate I love your videos. Not into knives so much but I love cnc work. I'm a toolmaker by trade and enjoy using mastercam. I'm in Australia and always laugh when I watch you using inch. The metric system is so much more simple for me. I'm happy with metric. Anyway mate well done. I looked at your website and it seems you knives are always sold out. How does one find out when the next ones will be made available?
@JohnGrimsmo

Ha! Being in Canada I really should be using metric, but I started learning with inches and now it makes sense to me. But yes, it's very weird and complicated, having to memorize fractions and decimals.

Now that you have the Tormach lathe, have you ever thought about machining a titanium pivot collar for the Norseman? Maybe even a collar around the thumb stud screw anodized to match the handles/thumb stud. Doooooo it! :)
@JohnGrimsmo
9 жыл бұрын
I have briefly thought about a pivot collar, but I have not thought about a thumbstud collar. Might be cool, might impede the effectiveness of the thumbstud ;-). Sure would look cool though. A pivot collar would be no harder than this vid. Well, my pivots have flats so yeah that does complicate it some.

Another interesting video. Where can I get that angled grooving tool you used to face and part off in this video?
@JohnGrimsmo

That angled tool is make by www.niko-nikcole.com/, I get them from www.kbctools.com. They're great!

JohnGrimsmo Thanks John. Hope I am not being a pest but would you happen to know the part number? They have a lot of grooving and cutoff tools.
@JohnGrimsmo
9 жыл бұрын
Kerry Harrison On the grooving and cutoff inserts page of the nikcole site you first figure out what width you want, I'm using 0.0625, then you have a choice of right or left tool holder and that depends on which tool you bought (left hand tool gets right hand inserts, etc), then you have a choice of left/neutral/right cutting angle. I do not know which tool I bought though, I figured all that out, ordered it, then promptly forgot haha.

Great video! Loved it when you dropped the part, been there done that. Did you consider alternating drills and tuning tools? Will give you much more clearance for turning diameter. Cheers!
@JohnGrimsmo

Ahh good idea, I had not thought of that! When I need more turning diameter I'll keep that in mind.

JohnGrimsmo I was thinking on this a little further and the drills could hit the spindle or collet as they're out further. So many trade offs!

Unrelated question: do you generate code for every serial number you engrave, or do you have a way to advance the numbers automatically?
@JohnGrimsmo
9 жыл бұрын
I have a manu-matic way to do it. I made 10 codes, the numbers 0-9, in the first position of my three digit serial number. Then I use a subroutine and G52 offset to call each one, move it over 0.1" or whatever, call the next number, etc. Three codes, so I can easily edit the code for each number. Here's an example for #233: G52 X0 Y0 Z0 M98 (Norseman Blades\Engrave - RWL.TAP) M98 (Norseman Blades\Engrave - 2.TAP) G52 X0.070 Y-0.020 Z0 M98 (Norseman Blades\Engrave - 2.TAP) G52 X0.141 Y-0.039 Z0 M98 (Norseman Blades\Engrave - 3.TAP)

silentqueue They're easy, and it lends itself to subroutines very well. Just don't forget G52 x0y0z0 at the end to cancel it all!

Why go through all the effort of making the spacer dimensionally correct, and then not clean it up and remove the burrs? It would have added 5 minutes of work, and the end result would have looked 100 percent complete.

reset the offset on your tool! These machines seem like a bargain, have you anything to offer as for benefits vs drawbacks?
@JohnGrimsmo
9 жыл бұрын
These Tormach machines are a bargain! Tons of benefits. Very few drawbacks, some are speed and power, although I have NO issues with the power. I wouldn't mind faster rapids on both the lathe and the mill, but it's no biggie. With Tormach you can get a brand new CNC mill for the cost of a 20 yr old industrial mill, and they have a nice small foot print and don't weight that much so they can go almost anywhere. They're perfect for hobbyists and small businesses.

Or you make a custom washer due to incorrect specs or calculations and the customer should pay for your "custom" work? Of course I am joking on the discount but not on anything else in regards to quality.

Just in case nobody's mentioned it (KZitem on iOS does NOT allow one to search comments), the plural of axis is axes, NOT axises…
