Is that vise a Toe-in vise that leaves gap when closed?

It's just a wood workers vise it doest leave a gap but it didn't completely join up flat when I put the aluminum plates on, I had to shim them to make it they closed completely flat together. This is the vise I used www.busybeetools.com/products/wood-vise-carpenterft-s-9in.html

can I use aluminum vise plates for carbon steel as well or just stainless steel blades?

Carbon steel needs to be quenched in oil but I still use the aluminum plates after to make it so the blade stays nice and straight and doesn't warp.
