The only knife you should even think about carrying in the EU or UK is a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. Get a silver 93mm or 84 mm Alox model like the Cadet, Soldier, or Pioneer X, because it won't show wear, and they are elegant enough to go to formal events. Virtually no one gets scared of a Swiss Army Knife, and they are all under 3" blade and non-locking.

I know for a fact that I would make a killing off of my knife collection. If you purchase everything for what the going price is or more, you might break even down the road. I don’t buy Chinese knives. I buy knives that are useable, practical, and something that I like and I would use. Nine times out of ten they are very popular and become in demand. I very rarely pay the retail price unless it is for my own personal use. Even then, I’ll try and purchase factory seconds for my own personal use. Which, has also grown quite large and I have many of those that I haven’t used. I also try and buy off of auctions or just other people just getting rid of stuff because they need to, for one reason or another. It’s fun and they don’t take up a whole lot of space.

If you buy right you will 100% be able to flip for a profit. It's not fun buying that way as then your missing out on a lot as your only buying to flip. I would say on the vast majority or sprints and exclusives I buy are indeed worth more than I paid for them if I keep them new in box. Then they are just the hard to get pieces that people pay a premium for on the 2nd hand simply because they are so hard to buy on the retail market. Knives aren't investments but what knives are is a store of value.

Now and then, some people luck into a purchase which skyrockets in value. I've had that happen once by serendipity with one knife I bought in the 1970s as a camping knife at the flea market (I think for about $15.00). It is a tough outdoor hunting & survival knife hand-made about 100 years ago by Janne Martiini in Lapland in arctic Finland. J. Martiini went on to found Martiini Knives (most fishermen use a factory-made Martiini fillet knife). I've had this knife checked by the Martiini company, sending it to Lapland, and they confirmed that it is the oldest knife hand-made by J. Martiini known to exist today. It is a classic fixed-blade hunting knife of 0.140 carbon steel stock with a 6.25" blade length, with a reindeer bone handle & steel butt. The blade is hand etched with Martiini's signature & the town in Lapland where he made it. The blade also has a magnificent hand etching of a sleigh with a man, being pulled through the snow by a reindeer. The hand-made leather sheath is hand-embossed with a typical Lapland village of the beginning of the 20th century. Martiini makes a machine-made, machine-etched copy of this knife today with a machine-embossed sheath & a birch handle, the Lapp 250, which sells for €103.90. The only hand-made Lapp knife made by hand by J. Martiini sold recently, dating about 5 years after mine, was just sold last year at auction from the estate of a minor celebrity for $3,300.00. Martiini Co has recently been owned by Rapala & now Arctic Adventure, but there have always been Martiinis involved in running the company. I asked for an appraisal of the knife & the Martiini family couldn't give me one. They said, given its uniqueness, it's worth whatever somebody would be willing to pay at auction, but would be much more than the one recently auctioned. This might be worth twice or ten times the price of that knife - or much, much more - whatever a truly rich collector would pay. I'll never sell it. It is truly the Holy Grail of all knives.

The sad thing with collecting just about anything for a profit is that you rarely get to enjoy the item. Knives aren't as bad as NIB vintage toys or sneakers I guess, where you can touch, open and close them, but carrying them or (Heaven forbid) cutting anything with them renders them as "used". Then the value tanks. You'll still be able to sell it if it was/is popular, but it's highly doubtful you'll make your money back, much less turn a profit. If you were to though, Spyderco's sprint runs and dealer exclusives tend to hold their value due to scarcity I suppose. I agree with Thomas' sentiment here; get into the hobby if you enjoy it, don't make it a side hustle

The trouble with buying for investment is that you usually have to sit on the purchase for many years, or even generations, before the antiquity & rarity of the object shoots the price up. That's not a very good short-term wealth strategy. My mother, a professional artist who studied under the two top artists of the "New Hope School of Expressionism" (sometimes known as the Bucks County or Pennsylvania school) left me an original Matisse litho, signed & numbered. It's my retirement fund ;).

Some really cheap knives can use a laser to make some rudimentary pattern-weld lines. Those are usually the cheap-o "gas station" knives though. Some more expensive ones can use "Damascus cladding" where they bond Damascus steel to the sides of a core steel, usually VG-10 (a lot like Cold Steel's San Mai blades). A lot of asian kitchen knives do this like Shun as a cost saving measure. The older versions would have 3 layers like the Cold Steel, but newer ones are done with one sheet of the Damascus layer "taco'ed" over the spine of the core steel before bonding. Then there's actual Damascus. Most reputable Chinese company's Damascus seems to be the mix 9Cr18MoV & 10Cr15MoV which is pretty good stuff (like a mix of 440B and VG-10). Forgers still like 1095 & 15N20 but that mix isn't really commercially made en masse and is highly rust-prone anyway. Aand Damasteel is the bougiest stuff. Made in Europe, and uses powder metallurgy RWL-34 and something else which is essentially the same as CPM-154.
@EDCandLace
4 ай бұрын
Lol knives like shun don't do cladding as a cost saving messure... the do a hardened core between non hardened cladding for none other than the purpose of thinning. As you sharpen a knife it thickens due to the grind, try thinning a monolithic steel knife that's all hardened and it's a nightmare as where thinning a unhardened jacket is a quick and easy job. Adding a cladding is a far more costly step than it is to run a thicker piece of VG10, SB, SG etc etc. It has nothing to do with cost it simply has to do with thinning to maintain geometry.
@JerryLoffelbein
4 ай бұрын
@@EDCandLace Yor're right there. I'd add that I was mostly thinking of cladding being added to a few folders I have, where they'd easily save time/money over just a plain VG-10 blade, thus pretty much cosmetic. The steel on those is the standard 58-60 HRC instead of much higher like Japanese kitchen knives tend to run. In those cases, the cladding also adds structural integrity and/or impact resistance for the core steel with very high HRC (63+ can make for some brittle blades with thin and long geometry like a chef's knife with VG-10 or most other options)

Question: Hey DCA can you please start producing and selling taco style kydex sheaths for the Pocket Tango? I would buy 3 of them. Love the knife, mine is green micarta/nessmuk blade. The sheath it comes with is really nice and works great for it's intended application, but I have other carry needs. I need one kydex sheath with an Ulticlip so I can attach it to the hip belt or shoulder strap of my backpacking pack, one with a G-clip or something similar for scout carry on the waistband of the lightweight jogging shorts I wear on day hikes, and one with no clip so I can carry it as a neck knife in camp. Knives have historically been hand tools with some intrinsic barter or resell value. Whether a frontier trading post with a barrel of skinners, a modern hardware store with a knife display, or an e-commerce site with a compelling KZitem channel, the key to knife sales profitability is VOLUME. Hard to make money chasing trends and buying in advance of peak interest. Plus, a knife that is loved is a knife that is used. Used knives tend to lose value quickly.

I have a question: how exactly does the Rockwell scale work at a business level? They only go up in value when people list them on secondary market like Arizona Custom, and sell on consignment and can list whatever absurd price they think some noob would pay... 383 bucks for a tanto PM2? yeah, NO. Sometimes though, you can find a hard to get knife, at a premium, and I suppose you could hang on to it and see if it goes anywhere - but that's a poorly calculated risk. Want a Yeager-M, a Strix? those are out there, but because they're very limited in the wild, you will pay a premium.

Same with my Oz machine co Roosevelt and Xl Roosevelt, they sell for a few hundred over retail. Condition really maters though, you can't use a knife if you want premium.
