I really appreciate your excellent review! This is exactly what I need to help me to know whether to invest in the Elipsa. I like that you take your time and don't rush through your review. You speak clearly and distinctly, and not rapidly, giving me time to mentally process what you are saying, and the camera was on the Elipsa so that I could easily see what you were describing. Your review was organized very well.

I have a question about notebooks. I like to bullet journal, and a e-ink writer sounds like an amazing way to do it. I wondered if there is anyway to. hyperlink to pages inside a notebook. I'd like to have a table of contents at the beginning, and collections throughout that link to specific pages. Another workaround would be keeping various parts in separate files and then linking the files to a master document. Is either of these possible?
@brendangavin4750

Nope. However there was a recent update that allows for folders so you now can now manually organize files that way.

Finally someone who address one of the main features of a note taking device... how the notes are organized! Can you clarify: they are only sorted by book, or can you see all your notes in one folder like section?
@brendangavin4750
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you @Nicolò Anesa. My pleasure! Just looked at it. Clicking the 'My Notebooks' icon brings you to the My Notebook homepage. There you can see icons representing your previously written notebooks, there are a max of 11 icons displayed on a page. If you have more than 11, simply click the down arrow to advance to the next page. As far as I can tell, I see no option to create folders, so the icons/titles are all you got. They can be sorted by 'Recent' and 'Title' only but the notebooks themselves are not searchable as far as I can see (either for content or titles). Ideally, if you are writing many notebooks, you probably would be best to import them into OneNote or some other repository. In this way, you can have searchable text, organized in tabs etc. Hope this helps!

@@brendangavin4750 Great input, thank you! What about the noted pdf or e-pub? Can you see which are noted and which not? You said you can't export those annotation, right?
@brendangavin4750

@Nicolo Anesa - I cannot see any way to identify if a book or pdf has been annotated other than clicking on the three little dots (...) beside the book (in the 'My Books' homepage) and then checking if 'Annotations' is displayed in the menu. If so, you've got them in the book or PDF, if not, then no. This could be time consuming if you have many to check but I guess it's better than having to go into the book itself. However, I found one work around. You can create 'Collections' in the 'My Books' home page. To do this, you would click those three little dots beside the book that you have (or want to) annotate. Then click on 'Add to Collection'. It will take you to a new screen where you can create a collection folder by clicking the three dots again (...) and clicking on 'New Collection'. You could create and name this folder 'Annotated Works' or something. Then you would move the annotated book into this folder. From hereon in, you can simply click 'Collections' on the 'My Books' homepage and click on this 'Annotated Works' folder. Voila.. you will see all your annotated works there.

I have questions about notetaking. * Does the handwriting recognition do markdown at all? I take a lot of notes on books and podcasts. It would be nice to have headings and bulleted lists. And tables. * Also, can the kobo connect to a bluetooth keyboard? Being able to type my notes onto an eye-friendly screen would also be amazing.

Brendan, I don't take notes of what others say - I just write, poetry and prose mostly. So the note-taking "speed" issue re legibility wasn't that relevant to me. The main issue that you didn't cover for me was covering a file exported in docx format to my laptop, making some revision via the keyboard and getting the file back to Elipsa for further editing. (I add two things here: firstly, the Kobo technician told me today that I couldn't export into word as a docx file, only as a PDF. That is, he does know the product that well!. Secondly, I adore the feature on Elipsa that you can convert one part of your scribblings/notes to text, add some more note and convert again. I may be wrong, but my reMarkable2 only lets me convert to text just the once, and then I must email it. In summary, reMarkable is going back under their 3 month free trial period. It may be a great tool for taking and sharing notes, but it is not a tool for authors.) Would you mind showing us how to get an edited version sent from Elipsa to a laptop and back again? I just ordered one and hope I don't have to connect via cable. If so, never mind. thanks Jeff

@@Jeff Lester - I tried to export the docx onto my computer and back again into the Elipsa. To do this, I had saved the original .docx (on my computer) into three different versions - docx, .txt and .rtf - and changed their file extensions to .nebo (which is the notebook format extension), then copied them back into the folder (on the Elipsa) where their .nebo cousins live. None of these worked on the Elipsa unfortunately nor could I even see them on the Elipsa. I will play with it some more but is probably beyond my capability since I suspect one would have to edit the actual software code in some manner. Any luck on your end? Baring this, it cements the use case for the Elipsa in my mind. Not an editing orientated device but a note capturer that serves as a input (only) to your word processor on your computer.

Hi @Sayeedah Harun. No you do not need a subscription to read books or to take a PDF and write on it, nor do you need a subscription to enjoy notetaking. To get a book on the Elipsa, you can simply buy one online at Kobo, Barnes and Noble, Indigo and other supporting retailers. Also, you can download books from your local library (depending where you live.) You can upload free epub formated ebooks and PDFs to the Elipsa through the free Dropbox account or by connecting it to your computer with a USB cable. Hope this helps!

I do have my eye on this device. You didn't mention if you can export your notes on a PDF file. From I can guess from other reviews is that it won't do that. So you can't use it to complete PDF files and then export them. That is something that would be very useful. If it did this I think more people would want to get this device.

Thanks for your question. Your instincts are correct. You cannot export your notes from the notebook to PDF. However, a work-around is to export your notes to WORD and 'save-as' the file as a PDF. Also, you cannot export any annotations you make on a PDF either and I see no workaround for this. Kobo are you listending :)

The main two advantages of epaper screens are that they are better for your eyes and you can read longer and that they tend to have a longer battery life, since eink screens only consume energy when changing the image, where as an ipad screen would consume electricity all the time when it is on. While their use cases do have some overlap, they still have different main focuses.

Thanks for the review. But what happens if we take notes, and then change the font size? The notes remain in the same spot, and change size too?
@brendangavin4750
2 жыл бұрын
Great question Nanci! I just tried it out. When you change the font size, the annotation itself disappears from view, and is replaced by a 'marker'. Think of a marker as a small symbol in the margins that indicates an annotation is buried somewhere within the paragraph beside it. When you click this marker, a window opens up with the text (sized as it was before), and the annotation you wrote. So in summary, you don't lose the annotation, but you cannot see it unless you click on the marker in margins. Hope that made sense!

Ok. I tested it today. I ran a 30 minute test using the Basic notepad continuously writing the entire time and, for the control test left it running for the same period while having the notepad open (but no writing). I charged both to 100% before perfrming the test. Here is what I found. After 30 mins of continous writing, the battery drained to 95%. In the control scenario, it drained only 1%. So it's 4x the battery drain however, assuming a straightline proportional drain you've got about 20 hours of intensive notetaking. Sorry it took so long! Hope this helps!

The writing appears to have improved on the last software update. I will do short video soon. I find some problems thought, esp. when changing page to page. It freezes for 1 to15 seconds on occasion, so you are writing and nothing is appearing, only to see what you wrote that number of seconds afterward. If they can eliminate this then it it becomes 'great'. Now I think it can only be described as 'quite good'.
