@daezyagbakoba6694

Okay, I agree with a few things on this video, but I just wanted to talk about the cultural appropriation one. From a basic standpoint, the textbook definition of it is "the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society". While some PoC may be indifferent to it on social media, there is still a very large percentage of us who do get offended when things like this happen. To this day, so many of us get called ghetto and dirty for wearing such hairstyles and could possibly get kicked out of work or school for it because they're seen as an 'unprofessional hairstyle', while other people such as Kpop idols or non-PoC celebs will get the same hairstyle and get praised for being unique and different, and it's honestly quite tiring. Not to mention that a lot of times idols wear such hair is to look "Hip Hop", as they call it, which shows that they have a very narrow-sighted understanding of Hip Hop culture and don't fully comprehend or appreciate the genre that they're trying to emulate. Hip Hop is more than just wearing dreads and grill or putting your hair in cornrows, those are simply just a byproduct of the culture, and many Kpop idols are contributing to making the genre look more and more one-dimensional as time goes by until you're left with some watered-down version of what Hip Hop is supposed to be. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean that any idol who wears their hair to make themselves look "Hip Hop" is inherently racist--because I'm sure they get the hairstyles out of admiration. But it just means that they're culturally ignorant. Like, Namjoon used to have his hair permed, wear chains and sunglasses, and be super aggressive in his music to give off this sort of "Hip Hop" vibe back in 2013-2014, but then the seven of them went to America, got mentored by actual iconic artists in the Hip Hop and R&B scene, and worked on their image so they could produce more polished and authentic music that could genuinely be called Hip Hop that had a stamp of approval from pioneers of Hip Hop themselves AND they didn't go back to looking like Hip Hop wannabes in the way they dressed and behaved. Things like this such as going out of the way to properly study and learn something from the culture you're taking from while giving credit where it's due--THAT'S appreciation, not appropriation. The IDOL music video was a perfect example of that where BTS fused both Korean and African culture together and credited both sides, and as someone who is Nigerian, it made me feel proud that our culture was not only showcased but properly credited. I owe it all to them for such a perfect execution. Now, back to your original point about no one caring about it or people pretending to on social media just to use it for the basis of fan wars, there are so many people who never engage in fan wars that genuinely get upset about these types of things, so to say that we're all just calling idols out for fan wars isn't an accurate statement. The only reason why things like laws and stuff are not put into place for cultural appropriation is that A) we still live in a society where PoC are systematically oppressed, so in a government run by predominantly white people, do you really think a law like this is gonna pass? And B) It's dismissed all the time by majority non-PoC, so even if we brought up the issue, no one sides with us anyway. I can't tell you how many times I see both in and out of the Kpop community "why are they mad? it's just a hairstyle" when these hairstyles hold so much cultural significance that often gets ignored. I don't know your ethnic background (but I'm going to assume you're not black so please correct me if I'm wrong), but by even having this opinion that we only bring it up for fan wars further silences the people who want the issue to be resolved and the idols educated. If you don't agree with this, that's okay, but I just wanted you to see a different side to the story. And one person doesn't speak for all of us, so just because someone says they're not offended, doesn't mean we all aren't. I hope you can respect my opinion.

@@abcdefg5439 Honestly he and the rest of the rapline are some of the only Kpop idols I respect in the game. Most of them want to rap but don't fully understand Hip Hop, and again, a lot of them still do appropriate our culture without second thought. Namjoon saw through his mistakes and worked to educate himself even more. In fact, it was their CEO who sent them to America, so you know it was his intention for them to be more culturally aware as well, so I give Bang PD props where it's due. All of the mentoring they went through there shaped the BTS we see today, and honestly I feel like BTS were born to make Hip Hop. I'm glad I picked them.

A lot of different artists made rock&roll before them, but for some reason the Beatles were the ones to strike gold and achieve worldwide success. It's the same thing, BTS is the group that's breaking into western mainstream music and they'll be the ones remembered for "bringing Kpop to the western world" (to an extent) regardless of how original people think/don't think they are. I don't know everything about Korean culture, I just know that during their time under Japanese colonisation Japan tried to eliminate their culture and language. So, in the present, when they use their language and when they practice their culture, it is also a way of saying "we survived". It is not just a trend. So treating it like a trend is disrespectful. Similarly, when people appropriate black culture, it is disrespectful because they just see it as "a trend" and not an actual way of life. When a kpop idol wears braids it is called "high fashion". But when a black woman wears braids, it's called "ghetto" and ugly. So when people appropriate black culture, the message that they are sending is "we'll consider it as long a black person". To us, it's not just hair, and it's not just slang: it's a culture, it's a way of life. Cultural appropriation, particularly that of black culture, affects the lives of black people in reality. So the people online complaining about it do so because it trivializes our culture.

Cynacist Thank you some people just don’t understand. It’s not just about attacking Kpop which we are not doing. But when black people get upset about something like appropriating black culture they saying we are being too sensitive and that we should get over it. Sometimes they should try and see it from a black person’s point of view. And I doubt they would survive being black for a day. They want our culture but not the black struggle. Imagine from a young age hating your natural hair because people say that’s ugly or inappropriate and distracting. One time a girl said to me that she would hate having black hair. I’ve always been insecure about my hair and even when I braid it I was still insecure. I always wanted to have Caucasian hair because it was considered beautiful. And we don’t just wear braids because it looks beautiful. We wear it because it keeps our hair protected from the harsh environment and helps our hair to grow. Some people just need to educate themselves on black hair. It really pisses me off when people say culture appropriation is stupid. Most of the time they ain’t black and living in their privileged world. When I almost everyday face racism and discrimination just for being black. Ok I’m done ranting now 😂

This hypocrisy in some of your points.... I’m astonished . Btw, Twice is bigger than Blackpink and most Boygroups. Their sales are bigger (EVEN in the US) where they don’t have ANY promo compared to Bp. They sold way more seats too. The only difference is : mediaplay. And you just don’t realize it because you’re believing it without thinking. However you don’t see other bg stans hating on Twice because onces stay in their lane to hype their faves. Onces receive already so much hate from other girlgroups stans (hello blinks too) that most of them just don’t have time to create dramas with Bg stans. The REAL reason Blackpink is getting hate (or more exactly YG) is : mediaplay and using other Bgs name to promote the girls, That’s exactly « fake it until you make it » and it’s too obvious.

Btw, twice is very successful too, but in North America you can’t compare them with Blackpink. Can we talk about how (G)-Idle Stans (Neverlands) have dragged ITZY? Basically there was beef between Neverland and ITZY fans... 1) ITZY fans said “best girl group debut in KPop. No one could beat them. They beat all records held previously for a debut... which is true... they did.... 2) Idle fans said (G)-Idle was Best Rookie Girl Group to debut and ITZY is trash... their song is trash and they’re vocally untalented... Soojin is better Dancer then entire ITZY combined AND shuhua 2 word lines in every song are more vocally better then all ITZY line up.... ^ that’s the beef... you can imagine the fan war that started after :(

I think #1 is really the most important, and wow I didn't realise #7 was that big of a thing, and I'm always a bit worried whenever talking about #9 too but like it's something I've seen so disproportionately more online, but irl if you see normal people following these 'controversial' fashion trends no one says anything/is accepting of it? just this whole video in general is something that you either learn yourself after following kpop for a while, or you never learn if you're just that delusional but it's always good to put it out there like this.

Another point I wish someone would mention is that stanning certain groups doesn't make you superior. Like people who stan 2nd gen groups and pretend that all newer generations are trash, 2nd gen idols deserve a certain level of respect of course but just because someone doesn't stan them or haven't been in the kpop world as long as you have doesn't mean that they deserve to be bashed. Or when someone stans only girl groups and girl idols, and look down on those who only stan boy groups... ummm you are not better than anyone else. Everyone has their own preference. Just focus on your favs.

Hard to swallow pill: “big 3 privilege” shouldn’t be a thing. Or at least “big 3 issues” should be. The groups may get a starting advantage on the charts from debuting under those companies, but they treat their idols like objects, the expectations are unhealthy high, they’re either overworked or under promoted, the freedom of the idols is the same as a prison’s, and the companies always have their favorite idols and groups.

Cultural appropriation is a huge thing in the real world. Goes to show how uneducated some of y’all are thinking every real life topic is just a kpop one. There are black people who are kicked out of places and fired simply because of their hair and y’all tryna say no one cares about it in the real world? Ofc, white people don’t care about it because when they have braids they get called “cool” and shit. If it ain’t your culture then it’s none of your business. I don’t understand what’s so hard to accept.

with #6 i agree that it doesnt really matter but sometimes it can get out of hand with false rumors and fake news because, lets say for example that the account that tweeted is a big/famous account with 70% of their followers being active, so that false rumor/fake news can quickly spread and some people just believe things they see online without doing proper research so sometimes it can spread badly that even the company has to clarify so i guess there's also that:/

*10. Your idols do not care about you at all.* *You're just numbers for them. Any live, any point of view, any action of them is well known by the company, and controlled by idols through experience and education. They simply know what to offer. Now, depending on the situation, some idols interact more often with fans and others seem extremely indifferent, even if their fans have made an extremely great achievement, they do nothing to thank you for it most of the time . You are just one number for them, from a view, to a number in their bank account.* *11. Absolutely all idols play acting.* *The fact that they are always very cute, adorable, and some seem indifferent or bored, only show how smart they are. An idol is taught not to say anything wrong, not to have an aggressive or controversial view of collective thinking. They all drink alcohol in their spare time (at least boys), girls drink coffee and sugar-filled acid juices, even energizing, even if they often want to look like they always eat healthy or have a balanced lifestyle.* *12. Your bias has a lot of problems.* *Here we are talking only about the psychological side, and sometimes even physics, if we talk about overworking.* *Psychologically, idols carry an extremely heavy burden. Most of them have behavior, attitude, thinking problems. Many are anxious and depressed, and are in constant pressure. A lot of people have medical treatments for this, which you can not possibly know.* *13. Your favorite group will disappear at some point.* *Thus, each member of the group will withdraw, and no one will ever know what he does with his private life. Why do not you let them go, or will not you care about them? Because the industry will bomb you with other groups, with other achievements, new innovations, and past groups will remain just a trace in history.*

I'm sure a lot of idols care about fans to some extent, not as much as the fans think. Maybe if they have megafans like Twice has SQ Kpop (he attended like 100 Twice events so Twice do recognise him and do probably favour him more than other fans) but they're also probably like "holy shit this guy literally spends thousands on us cause he's so deep into the girlfriend harem fantasy we sell". Idols who work hard on stage seem to be the ones who genuinely feel like they owe at least an entertaining experience to their fans.

To me 1st generation groups discovered and cultivated the land. They walked around on bare rough ground. Though they struggled to make it profitable and sell it to other lands they were getting some attention. 2nd generation built simple stone roads that had lots of potholes and bumps. But the roads they paved were safer then walking around on bare ground. They were slowly being noticed by other lands more and more. Current gen groups turned and yeeted (built) those roads into a highway in a matter of seconds and literally every other land mass caught wave of it and jumped onto the high way bandwagon. Each generation and group had some sort of play into how k-pop has evolved and will continue to evolve.

A hard pill to swallow is Kpop has a slim chance of actually being mainstream in America. Even the general public is like “oh those lil Kpop boys” can’t name a song nor a member. It’s not taken seriously just like one direction even tho more mainstream was seen as teeny bopper music. It’ll die down.

I hate when people go “omg you just got into kpop yesterday! You should know my favs!” Listen,,, so? Not everyone got exposure to kpop earlier in their life. A lot of western kpop fans only got introduced to by bts with their recent success. Sorry, it’s not my job to know your favs. I’m not saying I hate them or they aren’t talented, but if I don’t stan them I honestly couldn’t care less about them. Knowing all 2nd gen groups/idols isn’t a personality trait either and making those who don’t know them feel bad/less than you is just as shitty and honestly rude? When you expose them to those groups by being a bitch, of course they won’t want to know them! I honestly dont think that BTS paved the way, I dont think that a single group did. It was a group effort from other kpop groups to get BTS to where they are (nobody would be listening to them if it weren't for 1st or 2nd gen) so idk I think it's a really dumb term. But I agree w everything else that you said.
