I hear 808 claps at the end of the Sex Object demo. 8:36. Knowing that KW tested these demoes in Germany clubs I bet this is a tape from the club's dj desk and that was the next song up in the playlist after Kraftwerk tested their demos.

Looking at later works by Bartos, it seems that Karl gave a huge hand in the melodies of Technopop, even if the only credited song is The Telephone Call. Bartos’ “Esperanto”, made after the split, contained many tracks which used samples of Technopop. “TV”, for example, has the same drums. Because the first name considered for the album was Technicolor, dropped later for trademark, I think they wanted to make an album about other media besides computers (TV, Telephone ecc.). Unfortunately it never saw the light.

@@notapseudonym678 you're right. He has a strong sense of melody, while Ralf has perfectionism. Tour de France 2003 would have sounded completely different if he was still in the band, while actually it lacks strong melodies. On the other hand, latest works from Bartos have nice melodies, but pour production and ripetitive percussions (ironically he was a percussionist in the band)

Given that no new material has emerged since TDF Soundtracks perhaps Kraftwerk should jump on the demos and rarities bandwagon and officially release such material as these and other tracks. Ralf however seems happy enough playing in his own tribute band so it will never happen. He won’t even give the first 3 albums a proper re-issue !

In the late 1990s, there used to be a 2nd hand record swap meet in Düsseldorf, near Wehrhahn. There, I was offered a C90 cassette that -- according to the seller -- contained demo outtakes of the 1981 NYC recording sessions. I wasn't allowed to listen to it first so I decided to keep my 500 bucks instead...

Audibly you can hear they were stuck with this. After the superior "Computer-World", if they ended up sounding like this on something that was meant to be "Techno-Pop", it would have been a huge letdown, and they surely sensed it. The exhaustion and lack of a common theme is very evident here, despite the "Techno-Pop" concept. With "Electric Cafe", as we know it, they were lucky - asking for an outside hand to help them shape up these rough ideas, adding a more abrasive touch - the album versions turned out stunning in their own right. These two rough takes may have documentary value but idea-wise they sound very tired and for Kraftwerk's standards very very dated. You can tell from how they perform here, this is mainly a rehearsal and testing out ideas. At the time, they obviously weren't ready, the creative crisis took its toll on them.

antunivanovic I agree. In a way, they tried to keep the pace of "Tour de France" in "Techno Pop". But they aren't thematically linked, so it would not work. "Sex Object", for its turn, sounds more like an outtake from Computer World, and maybe could have found its way there - if only they had come up with it earlier and included a computer voice...

It sounds like a production of songs after Trans Europe Express and before Man Machine. Nice in a way but not at Kraftwerk level like before, like with (only) ComputerWorld after.
@ajs41

Yes, although the songs themselves are interesting, the production sounds stuck in early 1981 when Computer World was released. The problem is that by 1983 you had songs like Blue Monday by New Order and Everything Counts by Depeche Mode being released which sounded a lot more modern than this. The Tour De France song itself slightly avoided the problem by being so interesting in terms of melody.

"Techno Pop" has a very good melody, which, at least for me, seems reminiscent of "Europe Endless". They apparently got stuck in the middle part, the "music non stop, techno pop", or wanted to make it longer (maybe so it opens one of the LP sides) but probably had trouble avoiding unnecessary repetitions. Nevertheless, it's better than a lot of things done in 1983, has an infectious disco groove, and should have been released at the time as a single. "Sex Object" is similar to "Tour de France", but it was surely improved in «Electric Café». Too bad it looks outdated in 1986.

The Vako Orchestron is still here, here, for the vocal sound I love so much. Abandoned with the acquirement of the Synclavier, probably.

Which itself was later abandoned. If you heard Wolfgang Flur they basically took forever even trying to turn it on! The Synclavier came with multiple big 3-ring binders of technical manuals and it's not like it was "turn the synth on, set the preset to a piano sound and play".

That's actually what they did, in Karl's new autobiography he stated they would put their demos on cassettes and then play them in the car while listening to see if any changes needed to be made. They called them sound rides. Karl actually still has all of the demo cassettes of KW tracks, even studio session tapes too. He said there were four more demo versions of Techno Pop from 1982, when they were testing the song in different genres, such as a drumless version, a pop version, and more. Sadly, in one of his interviews he alluded to the fact that he will probably never release those tapes, at least not until everyone's long gone.

It's clearly plain to hear that Kraftwerk lost a lot of its creativity with the acquisition of a musiccomputer. It took nearly three years of different mixing attempts to correct that and to achieve the sound we hear on "Electric Café". The only real song out of that phase with a rather finished sound was TDF.
