Call me crazy, but Kai was one of the highlights of the film for me. His few moments of trying to be a proper, intimidating villain are constantly undercut, whether by nobody knowing who he is, or Po being Po, or some other nonsense. In the fight scene at the panda village, he has a moment where jade crane is swooping down to attack Po, but two pandas launch themselves in the air and knock him out of the sky. Any other villain in this series, or in Dreamworks in general, probably would've gotten angry and increased the assault, but Kai stops focusing on the battle for a second, smiles a little bit, and says "Seriously?" I love Kai. Also, his theme song is the best piece of music in this movie.
@alolamao833

I love Kai too, but I wish his character and motivation were good. He wants to get more chi because power? Yes, that is a motivation, but it’s a weak one. It makes him feel one dimensional. But I like him anyway since he has really good lines (“we won’t let you destroy oogway’s memories” “Why not? He destroyed mine.”) and he is incredibly badass in his mannerisms, and I love his design, but I just wish he was more well-written.

This movie was arguably the funniest of the three movies, and it's the most visually stunning as well. Unfortunately, it's also my least favorite. I liked it just fine, but it didn't leave me with nearly as much impact as the first two movies did. The weakest part of the movie for me was Kai. He's a badass and entertaining villain for sure. But I look at the amazing villains of the other two movies, especially Shen, and I just feel little impact. Both Tai Lung and Shen had sufficient time to explore their backstories, see their motives from their perspectives, and set up their personalities and emotions. They felt like fully realized characters, rather than the generic villain. We do know Kai's backstory, his motives, and some aspects of his personality, but hardly any of it is really fleshed out. With Tai Lung and Shen, we know what led them to become the villains of their respective movies, and why they have the motives they do. With Kai, I couldn't tell you why he's so obsessed with capturing all the chi in China aside from power. Which is not a bad motive. But it's just told to us rather than really explored like in the other movies. The sad thing is that Kai had the potential to be a great and memorable villain. His connection to Oogway is shown to have some significance, and he's shown to be somewhat bitter about it, but it's largely just there. Had that been fleshed out and given more thematic and emotional resonance, I think Kai would have been a more compelling character. He should have been way more interesting than he was, seeing as he was arguably the biggest threat in terms of damage he could do out of all the villains in this franchise so far. But as it stands, he's just kind of there and leaves hardly any impact. The movie is definitely at its best when it focuses on character. It just doesn't do that enough. As it stands, it's a decent movie, but not up there among my favorites. I've seen superior animated movies this year, and I've seen superior movies in this franchise. But it's still worth a watch in my opinion

The reason i dislike the 3rd film the most because it painted po as someone predestined not because he was pure heart or something because he belonged to the panda clan the master of chi. They basically recycled the same story from 2 (where Po learns a new super-power, although in the second one it was also a personal realization) and a bit of the first one as well with the importance of being the dragon warrior as the main driving force of the plot. It is the weakest of the trilogy because the other films where funny AND emotional all together.

I liked Kung Fu Panda 3, but there was one thing that bothered me. I was kind of disappointed that they didn't go in the direction I thought they might when Po's Dad was introduced. Warning: Spoilers At the end of the second movie, there's that little cut scene where Po's Dad looks like some kind of monk, meditating, when he receives a vision/feeling of Po being alive. When he shows up in 3 and Po drops that he's the Dragon Warrior, Po's Dad looks concerned. He also looks kind of bewildered when Po is fighting, and for a moment, I thought that they might have Po's Dad be a passive monk. Someone who is against physical violence and believes in defeating ones enemies in a peaceful way. It would tie into the chi aspect of the movie, as well as the whole history about pandas being healers who have mastered chi. For a moment, I was like, "That's great! We can see that philosophy and maybe have some conflict with Po, his father, and Po's identity as the dragon warrior, but also a panda who should know peace and healing." Po could gain an entirely new outlook, and maybe mix the two practices, realizing when to use physical skill and when to use peaceful measures/chi. Perhaps Po would struggle with chi, being the physical fighter that he is. Also, since the villain was once friends with Uugya (how the heck does one spell that?) then perhaps the only way to "defeat" him would be to use peace and healing, bringing him back to the light and making him understand the true meaning of chi. Not that I don't love battle scenes (that ending battle was visually awesome), but it would have been a bit of a turn and certainly cool as a mental battle instead of a physical one. But that's not the way the movie goes, as we all know, and I wasn't too disappointed since it was only a theory I had for a few minutes, but still...I feel like it would have been awesome to see something like that, and it was kind of a missed opportunity. Or maybe my theory doesn't work at all. ^^; I'd love to hear other people's thoughts about this, and whether you had a similar idea or thought something completely different that might have been even better.

Honestly, I think KFP2 critiqued the Chosen One narrative pretty well. The "self-fulfilling prophecy" is reflected in Lord Shen allowing the prophecy to *totally define everything he does*. Po doesn't really buy into the prophecy, and repeatedly asks Lord Shen to back down and realize that it doesn't have to go that way. Lord Shen forces the prophecy to come true because it's all that makes sense to him. I think they could have emphasized it more, honestly. The idea of the antagonist basically *demanding* the prophecy against him to come true because he can't conceive of a more complex world where he moves on from his past is a pretty good deconstruction of the "prophecy" trope.

I've had an interesting experience with the Kung Fu Panda movies. I related to the first movie because it touched on that idea of wanting to be anyone but who you are, and eventually coming to accept yourself and realizing that dedication and work you can be yourself and be someone amazing...even if I haven't met that mark yet. The second movie hit me because I don't know who my biological father is, and I was always confused about what that made me. The movie helped me see that it doesn't matter where I came from, only where I choose to go, helping me see that the way you're brought into the world doesn't make you who you are, and that your future can always be brighter than your past if you let it. Then there's the third film. There I am, a 21 year old man completely sobbing at the sight of Po's two fathers connecting. At the time, I had no idea why the scene affected me so much, but I think it's because I've always longed to know who my father is, and hoped that there was some way to make him a part of my life if the rest of my family would let him. But that simply cannot happen, and it hurt me to see this character I already felt so close to achieve something I know I'll never have. Of course, it also helped a lot. Just knowing that this sort of thing even bothered me that much was surprising, and I've been able to come to terms with those inner struggles all because of a trilogy of animated movies about a panda who wants to learn Kung Fu. For those reasons, this series is very special to me. It may have some flaws, but they're all ones I can easily overlook because I feel connected to these stories, and I've applied some of what these movies offer to my mentality, hoping that maybe one day, I can overcome all these little troubles I have and maybe one day turn my hardships into something spectacular.

I disagree about the part where Po teaching the Furious Five did not make sense. A core aspect of martial arts philosophy is the never ending need to strive for self improvement. The Five may be masters, but every movie so far has shown that they are not perfect individuals, and Po has from the start been helping leading the way for them as well as others like Shifu to become better people. The Dragon Warrior is just not a simple title given to someone, otherwise Tai Lung not being able to become the Dragon Warrior in the first movie would make little sense, or the Five for that matter. It is literally being the epitome of martial arts prowess and spirituality and no master will be able to measure up to such a feat of strength. Having someone like that teach other people to better themselves in all walks of life makes complete sense to me.

I personally found KFP2 the best of the three. I think it had the best balance between action and heart-felt drama, dramatic and expansive environments, with an unforgettable villain with an AMAZING design (Jennifer Yuh Nelson said he was the longest process to create) and a very gratifying step up of Po's character! I could probably go on how much I love the second movie. For the third installment, I did love it a lot and the only problems I had with it was that the villain was not as intimidating and not a very strong intent for his wrongdoings (except to just want power) AND that it had too much of a supernatural element in it (oddly enough which Jennifer said herself that she tried to avoid magic/supernatural elements and focus more on tactile and physical elements). I found the pacing a little TOO fast for the third movie, in which I found myself not being able to absorb an emotional scene before the a joke-scene comes on. Still, I found myself loving the villain for the amazing musical theme and the weapon choice and seeing Po yet again being expanded into a more well rounded (no pun) character! Despite the deus ex machina in the end, I found myself cheering on and fangirling!

Kung Fu Panda 3 is the best in the franchise. In Kung Fu Panda 2 (the favorite of most people), Lord Shen attacked the panda village, but there was nobody to save them. In Kung Fu Panda 3, Kai attacks the village and Po has to save them. You cannot say that's not the most genius idea for a third installment of a franchise. One thing that people hate about this movie was the “disappointing” villain defeat. But I don’t think people exactly understand it. Po had the chi of all the pandas and his own chi. Kai usually takes the masters’ bodies along with the chi, but he didn’t when Po gave his chi to Kai. That’s why it was too much. He took the chi of a whole village pandas and a “Kung Fu Panda” at a time without their physical forms. It makes sense, people overthink it. Also, at the beginning, Oogway told Kai "The more you take, the less you have." Then what happens? Kai dies from taking too much. Also, Po was taught kung fu with food. Then he taught the village of pandas with their talents. The whole "turn you into you" thing wasn't a callback to the beginning of the movie, it was a callback to the beginning of the franchise. The first Kung Fu Panda. Most people like Shen the most, but Kai is the best villain in my opinion. He may not have been intimidating, but he had really great villain lines. When Shifu said "Oogway, forgive me." Kai held up the chi of Oogway and said "What do you say, Oogway? Do you forgive him?" That made me mad in theaters. That one line made me prefer Po destroying him in the Spirit Realm over a big fist fight. Also, his music was obviously the best villain music in existence. Not to mention his weapon, fight style, or entrances. I don't need to talk about comedy, action, or animation. Everyone already agrees that comedy, action, and animation in Kung Fu Panda 3 is better than in first two movies. A lot of people complain that the Furious Five didn't do much but I think I need to remind people that this movie is in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Not "The Adventures of the Furious Five" franchise. I was happy seeing the Furious Five get a lot of spotlight it Kung Fu Panda 2, the movie wouldn’t be half as great without that. But I am extremely happy that they didn’t do the same thing for Kung Fu Panda 3. But I don't get how people think this is the worst or second best in the franchise. I think it's better than Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2 combined.

KFP3 was very entertaining, and arguably the funniest movie of the series. However, I felt it was the weakest one. What I loved about the first two movies was that while there was the comedy aspect, there were many, many moments of serious introspection, and there was a certain feeling of respect for the East Asian teachings being presented. But in KFP3, I feel like they used a lot of the Asian teachings for a joke- for example, the alternate universe of chi was beautiful...but when Po was in it, he seemed to be goofing off more than anything. While that is fine, I suppose, I would have appreciated if the writers just let Po have a normal, relaxed conversation with Oogwei. And not to say that jokes about Asian philosophy are bad- hell, they are usually the funniest parts of the series. But in this movie it seemed like they were trying to make the jokes a much bigger portion of the movie, and the calm, relaxed bits were much fewer and far in between than the other 2 movies.

I actually hadn't seen KFP3 until after this review came out, so I waited til I saw it to watch. Honestly I think that the 2nd Movie is the best so far, with good action, good characters, and a narrative that really flows well. I guess when it comes to part 3, I was expecting something that built off of its predecessor. My main issue with part 3 is it was to focused on the panda village, the 'fun panda times' and less about the incline of character growth. Instead we got character growth spikes, which was jarring, and we know next to nothing about the bad guy or his past outside of a pseudo flashback scene. Also SPOILERS BEGIN The way they did the Chi Magic thing and EVERYONE could do it, even Goose Dad????!!?! In a matter of seconds? That was the losing grace moment for me. SPOILER ENDS I don't hate the movie, but really? I think it could have been way better and needed more kungfu and less panda rolling. But I still respect your review and opinion.

Yeah, I am inclined to agree that this film felt like it over corrected itself on the comedy. Where in the second film was the exact opposite with more drama than comedy, and the first film was a perfect balance of both comedy and drama. However, I still think that all of them are great, even if the tone is slightly inconsistent with the third film.

The one thing I don't like about this movie is that whenever I want to listen to I'm So Sorry by Imagine Dragons (a amazing song btw) all I hear is "Hey! isn't that the song from Kung Fu Panda 3" and it just digs under my skin, because no one appreciates the work that went into it as a stand alone song. Wow, I just had a whole rant about a song .. . what has my life come to XD

7:24-7:28 In my opinion, this is actually Dreamwork's greatest strength: Having individual character moments and interactions, that are either character-establishing, impactful, or further their development.

One little detail I appreciate about this movie is the moment where Po meets his family and all he can point out is how much they look like him, and it's similar to my mom (who was adopted and never met her real family) and how she was fascinated with how much her first born child looked like her.

I liked Rango. I liked the dingy, rustic atmosphere. I liked how Rango clashed with the town's setting. I liked the crazy amount of detail in all the characters. I liked the way Rango's perspective on theater and movies combined with the gritty, realistic setting to create this weirdly spiritual experience in the third act. But mostly, I liked the crazy and creative designs for all the characters. Rattlesnake Jake easily takes the grand prize.

I really liked the movie, but I was hoping for a moment when Poe got to meet his Mother..... In a way include her instead of just talk about her. (I don't know it sound good story) but show her be the last panda being able to use chi and she had to teach Poe to use chi, or have her show up in the end and congratulate Poe Olaf the end of the fighting scene.... Or something super emotional for Poe..... But it was still awesome. Maybe just me wanting to see poe's mother appear.

I think it was confirmed in Kung Fu Panda 2 that Po's mom lost her life when trying to save him during the panda genocide. I do agree that it would have been fantastic for her to be in the movie...

I've noticed that Dreamworks generally has two series that it puts forth a large amount of effort in terms of character and drama, those two being HTTYD and Kung Fu Panda. All their other films seem to be noticeably less in terms of maturity, with the arguable exception of The Croods I guess.

You did think they would have gotten it right by now. What I liked about Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2 were the amazing hand to hand combats and development of other characters. Kai was so awesome, yet barely did any hand to hand combat. Well there will be 3 more sequels, so we can hope for more screen time of our other favorite characters i.e. Master Chicken XD. Great review! :D

I loved this movie as well (the 2nd is my favorite still) but I agree with what you had to say about the movie. Kai has to be one of my favorite characters in the movie but i wish they had fleshed him out more like they had done with previous villains. ( I really want a spin off short film, like the secret of the masters, with just Kai and Oogway back when they were War Lords.) Also Kai's theme was unquestionably cool! The movie could have also benefited with one or two more action scenes, but that is just me. Now this is just me, but if they do make a KFP4 movie, I really want the villain to be a female, I just think it would be cool to see. But they better not redeem her. I would love to see Po use his loving personality to redeem a villain but not on the first girl villain we get, not when they had a perfectly good set up in this movie. you know like Po teaching/telling Kai that kai never really mastered chi, restoring kai and oogway's friendship, that sort of stuff. I mean come on his theme is "I'm so sorry" by imagine dragons, roll with it movie writers! but that is just my opinion.

You know what would've made an even harder impact during the film's climax? Spoilers ahead (Probably): Considering that Kai can bring forth jade zombies from the chi of many kung fu masters or anyone in the spirit realm, Wouldn't it be friggin awesome to see Po up against Jade zombie Tai Lung and Shen? Imagine all of the creative fight scenes there would be when 2 of Po's most deadly foes, now mindless hellbent creatures of destruction, working in a tag team manner as Po harnesses what he had learned in the past to face off against them once more. Also, since Po's mom died as well. Meaning she'd be in the spirit realm, wouldn't it be screwed up and heartbreaking to see Po being forced to fight the mother he had never met in order to free her and in a way finally free himself of the shackles that these unanswered questions had bound him with? I'm 100% fine with him going magic dragon form but DUDE THIS'D BE AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER IF THAT HAPPENED. In my opinion at least, maybe it might work or maybe it won't.

First of all: there is set up a clear parallel between Oogway and Po, and the student having to take the hit for his masters mistake is a development of the dynamic between Po and Tai Lung in the first movie. Plus, Kai is WAY funnier than either Shen or Tai Lung. Second: I would say it makes a lot of sense for the Dragon Warrior to teach the Furious Five, especially since he has gone through such a massive development himself in a very short time. He has mastered his own inner peace and control of his body and mind, and probably more that has happened off-screen. Yes, being a teacher takes time, but Shifu isn't exactly unknown for throwing his students into really difficult situations he definitely know they can get out of

I loved this movie. However, what could be interesting instead of a KFP4 which I'm torn on wanting and not wanting, would be a spinoff series a la Legends of the Kung Fu Pandal focusing on the 5. Not their pasts, but present character development, or for a movie to focus on the 5. Could be fun.

I'm going to explain how teaching works at my Tae kwon Do studio, I dunno if it applies anywhere else, but I agree with CellSpex. You start off learning Tae Kwon Do with people your age, not necessarily your same skillset. You will stay in this group if you fail to pass any tests given to you. If you move on to the next level, you will learn with people your exact skill set. Now more is required of you. To advance in THIS category, you must pass a multitude of tests, the usual time to pass this level is 2 years. (4-5 years in total) Then, once you have advanced high enough, you can begin to teach beginners, Once you're around 3rd degree black belt, you can begin to teach people who are actually well trained in combat In this movie, it's just, "You did stuff, I'm leaving, teach ma class for me."
@PelenTan

In the military we had something called "Train the Trainer". And it wasn't anything like what it sounds. A lower enlisted was tasked with giving a class to the entire platoon, including those who had been in the Army longer than they had been alive. It worked very well. The "trainer" had to do the research and put together something that was in effect graded by everyone else. On the flip side, it got the old-timers to look at things from a different point of view. I'm pretty sure Dream Works wasn't going for that, but what they did does have a basis in the real world.

pretty good video that nicely and clearly explains your points and views on movies and the kung fu panda series but i need to nerd out and say that "ninja magic" isn't a good term for chi since naruto (the show where you got the term ninja magic from) doesn't use chi but a similar thing called chakra even tho they are similar doesn't mean they are the exact same and was pretty annoying in the video.

I am very curious to see which movies of the trilogy are other peoples' favorites. Me, personally, can't decide. I like the first one because... Well, it was the first one. The ORIGINAL. It introduced us to Po and the Five and Shifu and Ping and all the other characters. Plus, until the second movie I hadn't seen a villain as awesome as Tai Lung. I like the second one because it's a little bit darker but not too much. It has AMAZING fight sequences, music and animation. Shen is a really cool villain, (And the best one of the trilogy), and the concept of him wiping out an entire species, (Mostly), to appeal to his parents is strangely relatable. Also, I love the fact that the wolves in the movie have a similar social structure to real-life wolves. I liked the third movie due to the points listed above. I would appreciate it if you were to reply and give me your opinions in the movie, and even though in the end I will like one movie above others, I LOVE the trilogy and hold it close to my heart as a factor of my childhood! Sorry if this was a bit long.
