“Professor SUMIOKA, what is MANNERS?”
It is protocol or rules for communication that ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius emphasized. Everybody is eager to use a measure or a way that is convenient for oneself. However, as long as it is different, they cannot even sit in company. So, before talks, we need immediate common rules.
“What’s it all about?”
Even in a duel, we have to agree on the date and the place. In diplomacy, we need much more to arrange. However, if we argue about this, we will fall into an infinite regress and we will never be able to start anything.
Therefore, Confucius advocated following the precedents, namely the manner of the Zhou Dynasty that uniformly ruled China in one thousand B.C., and even now a similar manner system is kept, especially in oriental societies.
However, it was based on the old family system where close relatives were given priority, so it makes consideration, concealment, falsification, decoration, and corruption rampant under the pretense of peace. Thus, manner is often just a deception to maintain the status quo for now, so the real fact may break down and be exposed eventually.
“What do you think?”
Superficial politeness without the real fact and the humanity is rather authoritarian rudeness.
“Professor SUMIOKA, I got it well, thanks!”
