We have many Amish near where I live, and I understand their belief system fairly well. They wish only to be “in the world, not of the world”. They only adopt what new technology that their particular group will allow. Some will allow tractors on steel wheels, while others will not allow any tractors. They don’t connect to the power grid, but will use solar power to charge batteries. They are no burden on anyone for social benefits, take no welfare or social security. Keep to themselves and don’t try to force their ways on others. Pretty hard to complain about any of this. And they do create a market for obsolete equipment like this 1950’s vintage combine, which would otherwise go to scrap. Live and let live !

I am no Amish, but have run a combine over many soybean acres, and that cutter bar needs adjusting downward badly. Either tip it points down, or adjust the height skid shoes underneath the cutter bar. He is leaving 10 to 20% of the beans by cutting to high. Great video and thanks. The vast majority of the (non-Amish) farms in my area grow corn and beans mostly for ethanol to power cars. High fructose corn syrup is another big product as is animal feed, but most of it goes to the ethanol plant. What do the Amish in your area do with the soybeans? Do they use it as feed, or do they sell them? The Amish in our area (SW Wisconsin) don't grow soybeans that I've seen.

Amish have no qualms with engines or technology. There’s this romantic image non Amish have created about Amish people. For some reason “Englishers” believe Amish shun technology and want to live in the past. Nothing could be further from the truth. When Amish look at modern ways they tend to look at it through a lens of “how is this or that going to affect our close knit communities. A gas engine on a farm implement has little to no affect on their togetherness. A gas engine in a vehicle could have great affects on their community togetherness. If you look at the world today most families are spread out with many many miles between them. Neighbors often don’t know neighbors. The Amish prize having their families and church members close. A car could damage that where a horse and carriage not so much. Look at it from that perspective and it should make some sense to you.

It looks all cute and everything in a video but spend some time actually watching them in real life - It would make most people sick at how bad they treat their animals... if you have the stomach for it look up - amish puppy mills...
@LancoAmish
Жыл бұрын
Lived among them for many many years. Puppy mills are not solely an Amish phenomenon and it’s not as if every Amish farm or family has a “puppy mill”. They do tend to treat their dogs as farm animals though and not part of the family as has happened only relatively recently in the wider society. Many families I know now have family dogs and their litters are well taken care of. A blanket statement that you throw out there is very stereotypical. Why don’t we hear of Mennonite puppy mills, “English” puppy mills,etc. Another myth concerns their horses. Draft horses can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Do you truly think the majority of any group is going to mistreat their horses when they are that costly? Lastly, if there were no market for puppies would their be these puppy mills you speak about? Perhaps half the blame belongs to that part of society also.

Tell me what makes it hypocritical other than your belief how someone else should do their work? Amish have no problem using a gas engine to power farm implements pulled by horses. How is that hypocritical? They use gas and diesel powered engines for many things just not tractors in the field. They didn’t put themselves on a pedestal and say “look at us we shun modern things”. Non-Amish did that.I think you’d be surprised to know that many of Lancaster Amish use computers, have phones, state of the art manure management systems, milking machines connected to vacuum pumps, cooled bulk tanks, solar panels, lithium battery banks, the newest and best battery powered tools, Diesel engines running compressors and inverters to charge all sorts of batteries, solar run freezers, washing machines, refrigerators, …The Amish didn’t create the myth about themselves people like you did so you could self righteously call them hypocrites.
@richardkent7369
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ortho. What seems hypocritical is actually hypocritical. The technology the Amish rejected was cars or more to the point the 'internal combustion engine' that created cars, trucks etc. For them to have horses pull an internal combustion engine that powers the harvester is hypocritical. The fact Amish use other techs does not matter. however we are all living in the world we were born in with the traditions we were born with. I believe strongly in democracy but don't mind living under a Queen here in England. Nothing is perfect.
@dhos0082

Exactly….I have worked with the Amish for years and most people have a huge misconception of the Amish. Yes they don’t drive cars but have no problem paying people to pick them up with their vehicles and being shuttled back and forth to work and to the mall. Amish are some of the fakest people out there. They only look out for their own kind and don’t care about the “English people” as they call us. Most Amish now a day have cell phones and even go to the library to use the internet. The product they push is no better then anything else being made here in the US. They pay zero taxes and always look to trap the tourist and con them out of millions of dollars a year with their “Amish built” crafts, crops and baked goods.
