Two entirely different vehicles. One is a comfortable SUV, the other is an off-roader, overlanding truck. Expect 100K in the LR and then huge repair bills to keep it running if you use it for overland touring. LR4 was not even on my radar, and I had one for a year back in 2012. I loved it, but its not an overlander, and can not be converted to be one. IMHO.

4xOverland yep it's not an out and out overlander, but as an all-in-one 4x4 to tackle whatever life throws your way it's incredible. Very different target and execution to the 70 series though. The 200 series is probably its closest rival

So much of this model is a deal breaker.. Wider front track than the rear, alternator position (always gets wet), starter motor position (under inlet manifold), Insufficient fuel filtration, Injectors that only last just over 100000km's on clean fuel (effectively consumables) and cost thousands to replace, EGR system that chokes the engine over time, standard clutch clamping pressure not enough. Will be interesting to see how the new DPF equipped version goes. And the price- 1HD equipped Land Cruisers were always a little pricey but you used to get what you paid for through their great reliability for many many Km's, not so much with this 1VD engine.. $75000 should be more than enough (I would hope) for hassle free driving without reaching for more money. Still they go very well and are so popular here in Australia. Nissan needs to step up.

Ten to twenty years to come the 79 series is going to be the classic off road symbol like the landrover series I & II.. So I agree with the land cruiser not to change anything on the look of the car, for me updating only the engine is enough. .. If anyone want confortability and luxury go for land cruiser 200 series or prado. .. Just leave the 79 series alone to remain classic...

@shauncomper1304

Not sure if it's the only reason, but back when the Austin Gypsy went against the landrover lightweight for the British Army contract it was the fact that the squadies could drive the gypsy fast enough to destroy it on its super comfy coils and that the Landy had self speed limiting leaves, ie go too fast and your spine will poke out the top of your head! That was one of the main reasons the landrover won the contract.

That old climate control is very simple and it works. Ahhhhhh I'm so conflicted about this! I feel like this is a $75,000 chassis and engine with a free cab on top. It just seems.. kind of overpriced? And yet, that chassis is brick like steel, insanely over-built. But jesus. Those A/C Controls are just ridiculous. And that carpeting is ... yeah. Not acceptable honestly. I know it's a utilitarian vehicle. So why not just rubber mat the floor instead of carpet? I don't know honestly. I can't think of another vehicle that would really be suitable stock to compete with this, but I can't help but think you're paying a bit too much because of the limited production. And also because Toyota knows they can get that business and government money, so they can raise the price a bit.

Andrew congrats with your new car! That's my dream car! Some advise on fuel contamination prevention, I had similar issues with a hilux Double cab 1kd-ftv and what I got was a plastic inline diesel filter a friend of mine gave me from Italy. We fitted the filter just at the exit point of the fuel tank (before fuel gets to primary filter) and it worked wonders. That very light you were warned about hardly came on after that, meaning my primary filter was well protected and every 20,000km I changed the inline filter. Note on the hilux the pipes straight out of the tank are rubber. I am sure land cruiser is the same. Enjoy your car and cannot wait to see the end result!

Wheel spacers have been outlawed and not sold by reputable parts dealers, because in tough going the extra torque thrust on the rear diff can break it. The only proper way is a whole rear diff and axle replacement, expensive but works.

Im not sure how Landcruiser prices fair around the world, but i personally think they are way over priced in Australia. The second hand market is evidence alone that the new vehicles are priced too high. But, sales are still strong, so WHY would they ever change. From $75,000 to $125,000 for LC Sahara, it is such a shame there is still SO much you need to do to them to correct known faults. Low and Vulnerable Alternators, Wheel Tracks, Upgrading the seats in 76,78,79 series and the list goes on and and on. A lot of money, especially if you indeed to cut the roof off it too :( Yet, the moment you are in the Outback, it is the only vehicle you will see, especially owned by locals.

Can't wait to see this custom build completed. I'm a Aussie living in California. What you pay is what you get, it may not have all the trendy bells and whistles like the 4x4 trucks here in the USA (disposable society) but its a fantastic, dependable platform ready to go with the proper driveline and chassis build that will go on forever and rarely let you down. It will hold its resale value and that'll put a smile on your face :). My dad in Sydney bought a 91 GXL Landcruiser (6cyl petrol) with low kms in 92. He sold it in 2011 for about 10K AUD just shy of 400,000 with the original motor, clutch and driveline. The only repairs it had was a new radiator, window regulator, radio antenna and replaced the shocks all round. We used it for camping throughout Oz, the Flinders Ranges, Gammon Ranges and Karting (Go Kart) racing in NSW, QLD, SA, VIC and TAS plus many trips on the beach to Fraser Island and Stockton Beach. Even in its old age the chassis and doors still felt solid and tight. So many great memories for the family thanks to our trusty Landcruiser :) Congrats Andrew all the best!

My main grip and I have said this many times, Toyota selling these 4WD's for this price is just criminal with so many design faults. hmm they rrp at 72, I haggled mine down to 64 for a gxl made to order. they are leaf spring due to their ability to carry a certain pay load to be considered a commercial vehicle for tax purposes and just general spec sheet stuff. Have a look at the 77 series, has coil springs, towing and pay load pales in comparison. Speed that people drive them has nothing to do with it. At the end of the day theyre only about 5k more expensive than the shitty thailand made utes people get in droves now with paper thin pannels and water based paint for chassis protection. I think the 1hdfte is better than the v8. More room in the engine bay etc. I remapped mine though and it made it a different car. The rear axle cant be widened due to having to redesign the hole rear chassis and body. For the record you can legally widen it with spacers because in australia you aren't "allowed to widen the vehicle track" but on paper the vehicle track in the government system is recorded by the front axle. So if you fit spacers and widen them to match the front on paper you havnt actually widened the track in the eyes of the law. If you see the police and ambulance vehicles you will notice they are fitted with spacers. Ill be in Alice springs in June if you want to meet up. The im riding in the finke desert race and its a great event to witness.

What confounds me is not anything regarding the vehicle - it's nice, sure - it is the fact that the dealership let a older person just film the vehicle, in the showroom, in all sorts of positions, for what easily seems like a few hours worth of shooting (given the multitude of shots, each with probably multiple attempts/runs to 'get it right'). Huh.

Isnt it just plain ridiculous that a new $75k truck doesn't have a correct width rear axle?

I know that 4x4's like this are not common anymore, but that price is just stupid for how simple the vehicle is to make.

Question if you widen the rear axle what does it do to articulation. It appears that the body would get in the way?
