In this case there is no one in front of him, but it's what they're trained to do and should do each time. When you want to take pole but steering wheel says: FALSE NEUTRAL

I didn't even notice these cars had a medical warning light on them. On a Formula one car, they seem to blink if the forces are greater than 18g.

Interestingly, when watching the qualifying live, the car wasn't visible for some time when it went through Eau Rouge, so I could only see the telemetry. I was thinking "he is entering the corner at almost 300 km/h, that's fast in these circumstances." When I saw the speed drop continuously, I knew something was wrong. Then the next shot revealed a battered orange car going sideways over the crest. Was the track too wet? I don't know. I think it's more about the full wet tires not being good enough.

how the gears go down before it goes into neutral... does the car do that on its own or did he actually downshift while crashing

Very scary. Glad NOR is doing fine and that he is cleared to race.

Ok, so after watching the video and telemetry in 0.25x for 20 minutes, here's my (insignificant) analysis: He enters Eau Rouge at 298 km/h. As soon as he enters the corner, he dabs on the brakes bringing the speed of the MCL35M to somewhere around 269 km/h. (According to the Telemetry, he does this while riding the throttle which I find a little bit strange) Now, he has reached the middle of the corner. He steps off the brakes, and increase the throttle input ever so slightly for just a moment before immediately reducing the input as he realises the rear of the car stepping out a little bit. He applies full brakes and straightens the steering (which is tilting right, obviously) for a moment before correcting the car two times in quick successions. He first corrects the steering wheel approximately 40 - 45 degrees towards the left. (The car is still turning towards right) Then he again corrects it but this time, he almost goes for a full lock of the steering. (The car rotates immediately to the left) This sends the car straight towards the barriers towards the left of Eau Rouge. The speed of the car when it makes contact sideways with the barriers is well below 100 km/h now, as Lando keeps applying the full brake pressure.

It's not strange at all. Granted it is probably more normal to see with FWD cars (and rally), but left foot braking while being somewhat on the throttle is a normal driving technique. It's all about weight transfer and momentum.

@@Myrvold But doesn't this put quite a lot of wear on the brakes.
@Myrvold

@@nolimits4942 Nope. It's factored in. Also, wear is also down to temperature on the F1 brakes. IIRC its around 750 degrees where the wear starts accellerating, and its hard braking that cause this. I've personally done some 6br races with FWD cars. Obviously not close to F1 tech, but we didnt think about this the first year and literally wore out the pads. Last part of the race when we applied the we had little to no braking but a lot of sparks.

Question when he crash does he down shift to neutral or does that gearbox do it on its own
