I wanted this game back in the day but it eluded me for almost 40 years when I finally got a copy. I love this game and got the million points. I bought vintage patches to celebrate. Great review

The long lasers, zipping all over the screen, were an impressive effect at the time. Also, the concept of "you" being the aggressor was pretty wild!

I Really like how the lasers flash instantly across the screen rather than taking their time like a projectile would, á la Space Invaders. It really made what was on screen a lot more dangerous than it would leave one to believe.

That tear-stained letter anecdote was a great inclusion. Back in the days before photo-editing software and home photo printers became relatively commonplace, rendering photographic evidence useless.

Cool info! I had only ever seen the box art, and I always assumed you were at the bottom shooting up at the invaders. I remember one of the first VIC20 games I programmed was an "Invader" game where you controlled an alien invader. This was because I had no idea how to scroll the screen in any direction other than up. So, instead of a driving game where you drive upward, I made an "invader" game where you are flying downward. All you had to do was dodge the asterisks until the game scrolled 99 lines and then you won. The last line would have a small PETSCII city at the bottom, and your saucer would dive toward it and crash into it. Most of the code went into that victory animation where your saucer homed in on the city from its current position. For some reason, I didn't bother coding erasing the saucer so it left a trail of saucers behind as it homed in on the city. I dunno ... I thought it looked cool.

Nice. I got the impression you were at the bottom too. I remember typing in a "driving" game like that for my VIC-20 from a magazine, where new track shows up at the bottom.

I always believe a great video or write up should encourage viewers to reconsider a game they may have written off - and I'll admit, Laser Blast was one I kind of had. A large chunk of that I think was playing in the slower game modes, but more importantly, I don't think I'd really gotten the timing down to *really* get into the flow.

He's mentioned something like "Controller Cramp" (or whatever they used to call it) in another video. Since Atari had jacks that matched the Commodore, hopefully we'll see mention of a 3rd-party joystick that tries to solve this problem, in one of the episodes. Of course what they should have done is revised their joystick with 2 (or more) buttons at the time Space Invaders came out (which helped sell Atari consoles in 1980) so it would be the new standard to make games for. Then when they released sports games and Defender, the buyers would be ready.

David Crane is certainly one of the greats and Activision during the VCS era made some great games and seemed better to work for than Atari. Such a shame that Activision Blizzard has fallen so hard from those days, being such a hostile workplace. Thanks for the video.

Blizzard is the problem; not Activision. In Activision's entire history never heard any negative press from them until the Activision/Blizzard merger; Blizzard's sophomoric antics is why there is so much bad press.
@absolutezeronow7928

@@beedwarf Blizzard had this problem pre-merger, that's true. But Activision has also actively made working conditions worse for Blizzard employees on top of the rampant sexual harassment culture at Blizzard. The buck ultimately stops with Bobby Kotick, who enabled this. He has to go in order for any real change to happen within Activision Blizzard. (I've also still have lingering dislike for how they treated Blitzchung for his heroic stance on Hong Kong)

@@absolutezeronow7928 Would not be wise to name the top executive at Activision as a source of the 'problem'; I am unsympathetic to Blizzard Entertainments' predicament; the solution to the Activision/Blizzard problem is for both properties to sever ties w/each other. As mentioned before, Activision has NEVER had any negative press in the history of its existence until they involved themselves w/Blizzard Entertainment; cannot say the same for Blizzard, they DO have a history of negative press before & after the merger. To reiterate; yes, Blizzard is the problem.

@@beedwarf Activision is the parent company. Ultimately they are responsible. There is no way around it. If Blizzard management is/was doing bad stuff, especially for THIS long, Activision execs should have (and likely did) known about it. If they *didn't* know, they *should* have. Buying a property also includes assuming responsibility for it.

I never stopped to consider that you were the bad guy here. The only game I ever felt that way back then was Donkey Kong Jr. In the original game, Donkey Kong kidnaps Mario's girlfriend. It makes sense in the aftermath that Mario would have caged Donkey Kong. Yet here you are, Donkey Kong Jr, come to break Donkey Kong out of jail and _kill Mario_ by dropping him to his death.
